| MetLink12-15-07, 06:42 PM | I have been recently introduced to a new tabletop group here of 6 (Myself included) and suffice it to say my enjoyment for this campaign is dropping and I am floating with the idea to quit; the group uses D&D 3.0. There are three reasons for this recent line of thinking: 1.) The DMPC is grossly stronger than the party of heroes by level and race. This DMPC is a hybrid of a dwarf and elf, 'dwelf' so to speak. Now, I personally have no wrong with this, as long as other PCs have the same privilege of playing 'obscure' or non-traditional races, except we, the players can't. Instead, we the players are subjected to the traditional races of the PHB and lower levels. Oh yes, to add insult to this- the DMPC is playing a CE Fighter in a party full of neutral and good aligned people (My wizard is CE). Now one may argue it is a good RP to have diversity in a party, but when a party member (Managed by a DM) consistently does their part to make everyone's life difficult by killing key NPCs, abandoning PCs to the whims of death from the DM's traps- it becomes unbearable to play with them. 2.) Our DM forces us to pay 'training costs' in gold earned from the party's treasury for every level up. Now I like this idea, except if a player fails the DM's test (Subjugated to his feelings since it's not the same for everyone), then they must keep spending gold to pass this test so they can earn that level. When I joined initially, nothing of this sort was mentioned. 3.) The DM also is singling me out from the other party members (Who are all elves except for one human). I am a specialized Gnome Wizard by class using 3.0 spells and abilities. However, all my weaponry is from the 3.5 book (As everyone else uses the 3.0 rules, but the DM said specifically for me 3.5). Lastly, I am also the target of many crude jokes (Mostly non-funny) and have continually cruel circumstances occur to me in my character's sleep (Only one other player shares this sentiment as he to is subjected to it), which play into the RP aspect as few party members IC have respect for me (Even though I try my best to avoid making stupid mistakes). When I spoke to the DM about the rules, he said 'it's staying'. His DMPC is staying as 'he intended it to be' and the training costs are there because he said himself 'he's mean'. Now this all said, maybe, just maybe I am a 'snowflake' and this is all merely part of the game, thus I must 'toughen' up. However, I want an opinion on the course of reaction. The DM's girlfriend is my closest friend (For 8 years now) and I am starved for role-play (As it's been almost a year now since I last experienced it). What should I do? Thanks. |
| 1red1312-15-07, 07:03 PM | Kind of a tough one to say. Getting singled out in a new group makes me wonder if its not just some hazing ritual the group has. In my experience usually people tend to be a little more reserved with someone new until they are familliar with them. Lots of people have play styles that are not to other ppls tastes, or houserules that are bizarre to outsiders. About all a person can suggest is give it a few sessions and see how it goes. If for whatever reason they turn out to be a bunch of yahoos or you're just a more reserved person not so used to teasing then just drop them. There's no point wasting your time if you're not enjoying yourself |
| DrMorganes12-15-07, 07:06 PM | Walk. It's been said a lot around here lately, but no D&D is better than bad D&D. How you bow out is up to you. Pop on over to www.myth-weavers.com and join one (or more) of the excellent play-by-post games using the system of your choosing. |
| Fireclave12-15-07, 07:28 PM | Walk. It's been said a lot around here lately, but no D&D is better than bad D&D. How you bow out is up to you. QFT. If you're not having fun, you're just wasting your time. Maybe start your own group. |
| pres_man12-16-07, 01:07 AM | Life is too short to game with morons. Think about DMing yourself. Pick a time different from the current game and ask if anyone, including the current DM would like to join. Tell them you are quitting that game because you need the time to prepare. |
| CryoSilver12-16-07, 01:16 AM | Paraphrasing the OP's post yields: "My DM is a powertripping egomaniac and my fellow players are a bunch of total asshats that treat me like crap. What new excuse should I invent to convince myself that playing as an imaginary gnome is worth putting up with this crap every week?" The answer is: flip 'em the bird and find a better group. Tell your DM that you hope your friendship will not be impacted, but you find his DMing style intolerable. Tell the players that aren't your friends that they can go die in a ditch. Tell the players who ARE your friends that you wish some sort of minor unpleasantry on them, but that you'd still like to hang out and do other things with them afterward. If they're good friends, they'll understand. I was not offended when my friends told me that they don't feel safe when I driving; I'd prefer they be honest than surly and passive-aggressive. |
| danielinthewolvesden12-16-07, 01:24 AM | Leave. Let them know why. :weep: |
| kelvinaw27312-16-07, 02:41 AM | Ditto. You are not having fun so walk. You never know, the other players may get with it too, and the DM may have to realise that players are allowed to have fun too. |
| A_Ninja_Errant12-16-07, 03:17 AM | Is the in game disrespect because you're the new guy, because you've got some sort of "kick me" sign, or because you're a gnome? Nobody respects gnomes, not even WoTC. .......Well O.K maybe a few people do, but nobody I know does, not even the people who like/play them. ;) Gotta agree the DMPC is just wrong....I mean Dwelf? That's a combination I don't even want to think about, your DM is a sick sick man, and you can tell him I said so. :P In all seriousness, the rules need to be applied in a fair way so no-one should get special treatment, or special disadvantages. That's just the DM being an ass. If he refuses to see this, and you're not having fun, sad as it may be, you need to ditch 'em. |
| Novabomb12-16-07, 03:28 AM | My two bits, I would be gone in a heartbeat. |
| Daeva12-16-07, 03:53 AM | id leave that group about as fast as i left the gorup where at level 14 the gorup refused to rez me (despite the fac ti had the 10K in diamond dust on my dead body) and the GM told me to roll up anew level 1 character and just sit back in combat a few WEEKS until i could survive a hit... screw that |
| NordicBirch12-16-07, 11:25 AM | DMPC, bad idea. Training for level up, bad idea. Paying for level, bad idea. etc. you get the tendency here. each of those can be done well and be a good idea but most often they're not. Your DM isn't someone who should have any kind of authority/responsibility over others, even in a hobby context. Leave. They aren't worth anyones time. People are free to harm themselves pretty much however they want so you can't really say they shouldn't keep playing such a crappy excuse for a rpg session but there's no reason for you to subject yourself to more of it. If you're feeling nice, try to explain the situation to them but I really doubt they'll care to listen or have the capacity to understand. So, just walk. BTW, how old is everyone? It doesn't change anything but if they're like 10 there's a chance they'll eventually grow out of it and you might call them again in about 12 years. |
| Man in the Funny Hat12-16-07, 12:25 PM | 1.) The DMPC is grossly stronger than the party of heroes by level and race.[...]His DMPC is staying as 'he intended it to be' State once again to the DM in no uncertain terms that you find his DMPC to be a gamekiller. It is no fun to try to be the hero when you know the DM will never let that happen. DMPC's have their uses but OUTSHINING THE PC's on a regular basis is NEVER one of them. It's actually WORSE if the DM "intended it to be" as this is good evidence that the game is being run to stroke the DM's ego and not for MUTUAL enjoyment by all participants. This simply MUST change. Oh yes, to add insult to this- the DMPC is playing a CE Fighter in a party full of neutral and good aligned people (My wizard is CE).And this MUST change as well. Good and evil characters in the same party for any extended period is illogical, and if anyone takes their roleplaying with any degree of sincerity doomed to create problems. If intra-party tensions and violence is the INTENT then so be it, but it is otherwise a situation to be avoided. THIS MEANS YOU TOO. If the party as established is good you have no excuse for introducing an evil character and neither does the DM - unless disruption and infighting is the intent. When I joined initially, nothing of this sort was mentioned.Demand a STANDARDIZED test with verifiable results or demand that the test be removed. Tell the DM that while you are not accusing him of INTENTIONALLY being a complete and total ass, you feel that the totally subjective and needlessly arbitrary method of judging this "test" has led to unnecessarily imbalanced and biased penalties. If the DM is genuinely fair-minded he'll at least acknowledge this and if not fix the problem completely will ATTEMPT to make changes for the better. 3.) The DM also is singling me out from the other party members (Who are all elves except for one human). I am a specialized Gnome Wizard by class using 3.0 spells and abilities. However, all my weaponry is from the 3.5 book (As everyone else uses the 3.0 rules, but the DM said specifically for me 3.5).Let me get this straight - YOU must use all the rules and restrictions from 3.5 while everyone else uses rules and restrictions from 3.0? Unless I'm missing something that's just intolerably STUPID. I'd actually like to have more detail describing specifics of what you mean here - examples of what you have to do that they don't, or things that they can do that you can't. If it were me, since I generally know quite well everyone who DM's over me, I'd fight back and even up the ante. But that's only in MY gaming group where that sort of thing wouldn't happen in the first place, and where everyone would agree that you reap what you sow when you do such things in the second place. But in certain gaming groups and with certain DM's that would only WORSEN the problem - and yours sounds like one of them. Instead, rolling up a new character should eliminate this. There are often going to be races, classes, whatever that certain gaming groups, or certain individuals are going to dislike, ridicule and abuse. First, make a public statement that you've had quite enough of being the butt of all the jokes and pranks in-character and as the player of the target you've had your fill of your character being made as UNFUN to play as other players could possibly manage. Then state that your old character leaves and never returns (since the other PC's are clearly not his friends but simply let him adventure with them so they can kick him around) and make a new PC - one that is not going to be the target of jokes. State publicly that you would be grateful if the other players and DM would understand and respect that. If they don't, then they are NOT your friends and you don't need to game with people who behave like asses. and the training costs are there because he said himself 'he's mean'.It is one thing to be a rat-b******* DM and apply rules and consequences unflinchingly, heartlessly, and cold calculation. It is quite another to be SUBJECTIVELY cruel and arbitrary. Tell him so. Now this all said, maybe, just maybe I am a 'snowflake' and this is all merely part of the game, thus I must 'toughen' up.No, it sounds to me (barring other evidence) like you have plenty of legitimate complaints, most of which seem to stem from having a DM who is power-tripping, playing favorites, enabling in-game annoyances to the point of out-of-character player-to-player annoyance, and stroking his own ego. Take another shot at voicing your complaints and asking that changes be made. If the response is to laugh at you, ignore you, etc. then you either live with the abuse and severe entertainment limitations here (NOT recommended) or you look for another game. You don't need to get angry or super-passionate about leaving of course. Simply state, "Well, I'm sad to see that you take this much pleasure in being a jerk and so little interest in trying to ensure that your players actually ENJOY your game. I'm afraid, however, that under these conditions I can't play here anymore. I hope you reconsider and can invite me back." |
| MetLink12-16-07, 12:26 PM | Wow, so many replies. I am impressed with the power of the community and the overwhelming consensus. In all seriousness, I just told my friend that I am not feeling 'it' for this campaign and I am not having fun playing. She understood completely (Seeing my picked on fate). So now I am done with putting up with inequality. I also began working a 'modern' campaign for myself because I can (And it beats any play by post, which I don't count as role play given the frequency of a 'post' in any thread). I have three players on board so far and I know a potent fourth (But they're on vacation until next week). Thanks everyone for posting. However, I will make some replies to some responses. -On the topic of age: I am 21 and I am the youngest of the players. -On the the subject of weaponry: I mean things like crossbows, quarterstaves as well as armour. -On the subject of alignment: My wizard is NG, I don't what I was thinking yesterday! -I am glad I quit. |
| Etarnon12-18-07, 09:32 AM | Hear, hear. Good show. If the guy is calling you "snowflake" to your face, he's boorish, and has problems with his own masculinity, so to assert himself as alpha male, he's punking you out. Solution there is a shaken coke can sprayed on his books, "Snowflake this." You took the higher road. Bravo. |
| Sinis12-18-07, 11:46 AM | As the other posters suggest, walk. DMs like that almost never get better. They certainly wont while they have players. |
| metalmayhem8011012-21-07, 11:59 PM | Man, you should've waited to quit. I would've just walked up to the dwelf, in game, and said "I don't know why we're traveling with you, you're not helpful in the least, and quite a rude person. Well the group and I are going this way, you're not. Have a nice life." |
| Corbert12-24-07, 10:33 AM | Glad you finally walked, hope that (lousy excuse for a) DM gets a clue. Good luck and have many happy sessions with your d20 Modern campaign. |

| Passivearmada12-24-07, 10:53 AM | This DM reminds me of a DM I had not too long ago- he decided to buff his human that was actually tiefling warlock DMPC with some rod that improved eldritch blasts, but he bent the rules and was dealing like 20d6 damage each turn. He'd steal my NE assassin's plans and would completely ignore flight rules. ("I begin to fly over the tents and burn them with fireballs, the guys come out but they don't notice me.) And he was like level 9. the fighter was level 8, and I was level 7. Talk about inequality- he said it distributed the experience fairly. We decided to end the campaign because it was stupidly railroaded, and when I confronted him about his poor DMing he made a big joke of it and expected me to laugh it off, too. |
| pigknight12-24-07, 04:08 PM | I hate people that are killing the DMPC concept. The DMPC is supposed to be a mentor for the new players and should have an equal or lower level of the party. |
| Sinfire Titan12-24-07, 07:38 PM | I hate people that are killing the DMPC concept. The DMPC is supposed to be a mentor for the new players and should have an equal or lower level of the party. My favorite use of a DMPC: Cannon Fodder. |
| Etarnon12-25-07, 02:52 AM | I use DMPC allies all the time. Many scenarios involve PCs rescuing them, when the NPC screws up. We've never had a problem with it. |
