I need some help here...DMs only please

How many of you would have a problem with a wizard crafting a wand of fireball?

How many of you would have a problem with a wizard crafting a wand of Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer?

Well, considering those spells are within the guidelines for Craft Wand (i.e., spells of fourth level or lower), I can't see how a DM would disallow it. I'm sensing that yours did for some reason, so why don't you tell us the whole story instead of trying to get us to give you "proof" for your DM without knowing all the facts?

New DM, New campaign

I dm myself, going on for about 8 months now, good group too. I was missing being a player so took a friend's invitation and joined the campaign.

Homebrew world, which is fine by me and DM thinks on his feet, I do that too so, no problem there. lv 9 campaign, land rulled by hedonistic elves, enforcement is done by vampires, large piramids full with vampires.

Party is half fiend feral lizard, wizard and druid. We got lucky and and turned one of the sandstone piramids into glass piramids, bye bye vampires. So we got all of this loot, no way to sell it, so he came up with a fence. The fence says he can get us magical items, I just wanted magical suplies to craft the wand, magical items yes magical suplies no.

The npc is a really annoying/patronising **ick but the thing that sets me off is that the DM won't tell me straight, ooc, yay or nay about the suplies. Instead he does it in character. I need an answer from the dm not the npc. I've said that if he wants to control the availability of magic items to tell me so, that way I won't bother spending my feats on stuff I can't do. The dm is still inexperienced, I've been there, it's blessing to have players that know their stuff. One more thing, in his own words "I like nothing more than creating broken bad guys" he builds them using all sort of splat books, my wizard is core.
Nothing personal, I don't mean to be difficult, all I want is a straight answer.

Do you know what "Magical supplies" actually are? If you can find that out ask for them specifically. Otherwise make it up "I want to buy a some wood that was cut from a...a feather from a...a ___ crystal, bit of incense....Ill pay you X amount for them"

I don't know the creation rules very well. Is it a lot cheaper to make you own rather than buy them?

Finally got my answer, it's cool, plot reasons.
It's 50% cheaper to craft rather than buy.

The problem is that they also cost 4% of the market value in EXPERIENCE POINTS as well!!

Playing an artificer from Eberron, I set myself up to be a little magic-shop on wheels - and got the shock of my life when my fellow adventurers began getting WAY ahead of me in levels and XP. I kept making buff items for them to keep me safe so we could go get rare items so I could make more buff items for them so we could go get even more... lather, rinse, repeat, ad nauseum.

They are 10th level, and I am still 8th level... what a pain!!

If that wand costs 30,000 gp to buy, it only costs 15,000 gp to make... AND it costs 1200 experience points.

Ouchies!!

Keep that in mind as you craft! :weep:

Damn. Artificers get XP discounts, don't they? How the hell did you get two levels behind?

Anyway, since you ARE two levels behind, I think it's time you sat and XP Leeched. If the DM is following the XP rules at all, you'll get more XP per encounter until they do. If he's just handing out flat XP rewards, you're screwed.

I take it you get to rechoose your item creation feats if your DM isn't going to allow it for this game?

Yes, however I want to keep it. It seems the npc has a stranglehold on the magic suplies/items market and is a plot lead. I'll wait and see how this will unfold. But by boccob, give me a chance and that npc is history. :P

To craft a wand you need to spend: (Spell level * caster level * 750)/2 in GOLD and 1 25th of that in XP. It states this in the item creation rules in the DMG that the gold you spend is assumed to go towards magical supplies. You have gold right?

Artificers have a pool of experience points per level that can only be used for crafting. I don't think that they get a discount in addition to that, but I could be mistaken.

Being a new DM is tough, but being up front with the players about house rules is a must.

Being the players of a new DM requires some honest (polite and constuctive) critisism with alot of encouragement and praise. You should also be let the DM know what things you are going for (PrC, feats, spells, magic items) and what things this could change in game play so that he can adjust accordingly and not be shocked.

It's hard on both players and the new DM when he takes up the mantle, but it is worth it. Some DM are like the energizer bunny and can keep DMing, but for the bulk of us, we need to switch out every now and then. It's better to have a group of 5 DMs where they can rotate than 1 DM who will probably burn out.

Whoa, this just came out of nowwhere, sorry.

Your artificer needs to make sopme whip-ass items for himself, go out there and place his foot in the posterior of some nasty things (ie kick monster a***). Collect the experience and grin smugly at the rest of the party.

This refreshes every level to the value stated in the class table.

You have the class ability to dismantle items and store the xp needed to make it in your craft reserve to make more items.

You get bonus feats, and can take the Legendary1, Exceptional1 and Extrordinary1 Artisan feats (at 8th level you should really have all three) thus reducing the time, supplies cost and xp to make an item by 25%.

Also, if your DM is dishing out the same amount of xp to all characters in the party, he's reverting to 3.0 rules; the distribution system was changed in 3.5 to favour lower-level characters.

1 I think that's what they're called, but I can't remember right now which is which.

I did, however my pc used the gold to apologize(bribe) (my pc was too blunt a speaker) to the npc, easy comes easy goes. Got 2 honour points for it.
