| Ruric09-24-05, 01:49 AM | :ahem: Me and my friends have been getting together for a D&D session every week, but it's always been ruined by one of them. Once, they forget to bring their character sheets. The other time, no board. The third time, no dice, no character sheets, no manuals. An to top it off, the DM is a complete :censored:... He includes giants of his own creation: "Yaoi giants" (Yaoi means man on man love in Japanese). As well, his idea of a metropolis is 100 people and a goat... The nearby armor shop sells slpintery wooden armor, which actually DEALS damage to you. What's a PC to do? |
| Solik09-24-05, 02:05 AM | I'd say you have the following options: A) Become DM. Make sure you have all the core books and plenty of extra character sheets. Run the game the way it's supposed to be run. B) Beg your DM to read the sections of the DMG and DMGII that pertain to running games and appeasing players. Remind him that his ridiculous game elements are preventing suspension of disbelief and simply aren't much fun for you. C) If you're the only one that's not having fun -- find a new group. Comic shops are great places to go to find people. Online gaming could be an option, too. |
| Super_Demolition_Christ09-24-05, 02:12 AM | behold the Amazoness Yaoi Giants!!! |
| UltimateReality09-24-05, 02:22 AM | What's a PC to do?Laugh hysterically, enjoy the campaign, and do your "serious" gaming with a different group... Or offer to DM. But seriously. I wonder why my DM hasn't included yaoi giants...and goat cities... :( I feel deprived. Are all elves bishies too? |
| I Am Famine09-24-05, 04:52 AM | He includes giants of his own creation: "Yaoi giants" Thats worrying to say the least. I've got nothing against people into that of sort of alternative media but that is quite sad. Dungeons and Dominatrixe's... :P Seriously though if you and the other players aren't happy with this guy then just make your own group. To be honest if that DM tried any of the afforementioned crap on me then I would say my two cents and leave. |
| Ruric09-24-05, 10:42 AM | ROTFLMAO. No, no elf bishies, considering that we HATE elves... Oh well... But don't feel deprived... He made us adventure in Mexico once... That was hell. |
| UltimateReality09-24-05, 02:39 PM | ROTFLMAO. No, no elf bishies, considering that we HATE elves... Oh well... But don't feel deprived... He made us adventure in Mexico once... That was hell. HAH! Did he even try to disguise it, or was it a straight map, straight city names, straight NPCs, etc. etc.? Now I'm burning with curiosity though: who do the yaoi giants get it on with, other than each other? Come on, there gotta be bishies somewhere...does he have male nymphs or something? :P |
| Ridureyu09-24-05, 05:06 PM | I don't want to see Yaoi giants. By the way, in Russian, Yuri is a common man's name. In Japanese, it means Lesbianism. |
| Kalli09-24-05, 06:15 PM | In a humorous game, I'd find Shounen-Ai giants amusing. (Shounen-Ai -- love between two boys and of an infinitely more innocent nature than yaoi.) But not Yaoi giants. In any sort of game. And perhaps you ought to get a book on medieval/early Renaissance civilization for this DM guy, since he seems to have no clue that yes, there would be villages of larger than 100 people. There'd even be cities! (Aside: Actually, yuri also means lily, and is also used as a feminine Japanese name. The usage of 'yuri' you mentioned stems from that original definition, I think, but I'm not quite sure.) Anyway... |
| Jayr09-24-05, 07:20 PM | Shoot your DM... ...in the head... WITH A HAMMER!!! (Somehow, my mind can't seem to string together the words "yaoi" and "giants". "Yaoi drow", yes... "yaoi cambions", yes... "yaoi giants", hell no!) And as an aside, "yaoi" doesn't literally mean man-on-man love. It is generally thought as as an acronym for "yamete onishi ga itai", the Japanese phrase for "stop, my a** hurts!". |

| ^Graff_EpsilonIX09-24-05, 07:47 PM | Talk to your DM, if that fails, beat him with a stick or something. Be creative. |
| Kalli09-24-05, 08:02 PM | Actually, the original acronym is less vulgar. Quoted from Aestheticism.com: "Yaoi is an acronym for 'yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi': no mountain (ie peak; climax), no point, no meaning." In other words, plotless and meaningless...well, y'know. |

| I Am Famine09-25-05, 02:39 AM | You'd think you find this on the mature boards wouldn't you... :P I dont mind the concept of a humorous game, this stuff would be funny if thats what you and the players wanted to do. You could just nick a load of stuff from the d20 for grins board, come up with a parody fantasty/sci fi/thriller plot and then play a monty-python/cartoon network/webcomic style campaign. |
| RobertJ09-25-05, 03:29 AM | I was playing a Druid in a DragonMech campaign, which gave me a pretty good hook for my character, to oppose all lunar creatures and gods. We played one session. Before the second session the DM complained that none of the characters were really adopting the setting much (meaning, we had no steamborgs or steam pilots, or any of that). Before the third session I had a talk with the DM about how to maintain the integrity of the campaign setting by not bringing in too many other rulebooks, or much/any planar travel, which would in turn force us to adopt the campaign setting. When play started, he pulled out Sandstorm and informed us that we would now be using Sandstorm rules. By the end of that session we had travelled to the Elemental Plane of Fire (in the City of Brass). The characters in our party started at level 5, and the DM himself had a level 5 female Psion character who was a half-chain-demon with an ECL of 5. I don't remember her stat block exactly, but her lowest stat was 15. The gist of it was: 18/19/17/15/20/19. She has about three times the HP of our Barbarian, and equivalent with him in terms of BAB/AC. It turns out that on the third session the DM was running a vanity-press adventure for 9th level characters. The surprising thing is that, at level 5, we really had no trouble handling it. The reason why being that, no matter what the DM is running as far as opponents go, it inevitably charges straight into melee (he uses his Psion character as a meleer. She has a greatsword that does something on the order of 1d12+9). The only thing that even did any significant harm to our party was a blast of superheated steam, which did something on the order of 6d4 (!) damage to us... All of our encounters occur in a space that corresponds to whatever size the battle mat is when it's folded up (he doesn't even bother unfolding it). Our enemies inevitably start off within 20 feet of us. The DM frequently moves enemies around on the mat, even when it's not their initiative turn, and does so several times per initiative sequence (until I correct him). When we aren't in battles, the DM shows us the maps that come with the published modules, which means that he lays in front of us a map with the layout of the dungeon entirely visible, all of the traps and secret doors laid out. Currently in the City of Brass, our characters are completely languishing. The DM, earlier in the session, had given us a deed for four acres of land in the city, and instructed me to design a stronghold. We decided against it, and hopefully he's going to leave his overpowered demoness character to manage the land as we suggested. Last session, the only other non-hostile NPC in the City of Brass, an Efreeti bureaucrat, railroaded us into a 'haunted house' adventure. We went there and collected a boatload of ridiculous treasure, including, but not limited to: Tentacled armor that allows the Barbarian to attack using the armor tentacles for 6d4 damage for a move-equivalent action, a Helm of Eyes that allows me to cast Daylight and a number of other spells, including True Seeing, other miscellaneous magic gear worth over 100,000 gold, and three demonic tomes (minor artifacts). While I correctly identified the reason for the 'haunting' of this tower, since our party contains no arcane spellcasters and no clerics we weren't able to do a thing to rectify it, making the entire adventure, in effect, nothing more than a looting run. A correction to my statement earlier about the DM's battle tactics -- During this 'adventure' we encountered several worm-like creatures that seemed impervious to natural weapons. Fortunately, we merely stood twenty feet away and threw alchemists fire onto them. The creatures made no effort to even move out of the fire. To put it simply, I'd run a campaign, but I have too much work and can't dedicate the time, so I'm stuck with this if I want to play at all. |

| I Am Famine09-26-05, 10:50 AM | Thats a plan. Become a DM and allow your players to get involved in awesome battles and intrigue, create really cool characters and face scary and original monsters. Your crappy DM must be the butt of every joke, has to play a pie-eating Hobbit and often gets attacked by a scary Hentai Illithid... :P |

| IceFractal09-27-05, 05:56 AM | Wait a minute ... yaoi giants? Wasn't there an old 16-bit videogame with those? I think I saw it in EGM's "Worst Games of All Time" issue - you flew around in a spaceship that looked like a giant guy in a speedo, and I'm not making this up. Maybe your DM has been playing too much of that. |
| Kursk09-27-05, 03:03 PM | ...Then do the same to him. ??? |
| Bruunwald09-27-05, 04:22 PM | That all seems very funny to me. A big pain, but funny. It sounds like his game is intentionally silly. Fun for some, but obviously not for you. But the main thing I want to pick on out of this, is people who forget their character sheets. Little story: I used to keep detailed records of the PCs. Then, the trouble-maker left the game, we started again, and I felt I could trust everybody a little more. Big mistake. One of them turned out to be a real munchkin in sheep's clothing. See, he and his girlfriend moved into a new house. For two sessions in a row, he claimed the sheets were lost in the move. I should have known better, because she kept saying she swore she knew where they were. In any case, it was up to him to find them. When he couldn't, we would be forced to "recreate" temporary sheets from memory until the originals could be found. Needless to say, we couldn't remember them perfectly, and a certain someone's character (already extremely overpowered) ended up being even more so. But it was only temporary, right? Well, after the originals were lost, this guy promptly "lost" the temporaries. We had to repeat the process. Finally, he found them all. Next time I saw his character sheet, I was dumbfounded at how powerful he had become. I am 99.9% sure he combined the best ability scores, equipment, items, gold, etc., from all the sheets onto one. After that, it was back to detailed records, and eventually, to losing this guy from the game. |
| I Am Famine09-28-05, 03:42 AM | Hey Bruunwald, That sucks. I dont understand the psychology of people like that. First and foremost DnD is a game, even if you consider yourself to be a gamer before all other things. They clearly get of to own little world of power they can create in this 'fictional' game. I love DnD more than most things in life but to cheat in a story-based game seems incredibly stupid to me. |
