Do these Feats Stack??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-20-06, 05:22 PM Ok here is my question, me and my freind have a disagreement on how these two feats interact with each other. The two feats are Active Sheild Defense form the PHB2 and Robilars Gambit from the PHB2 as well. In the text it says i can start my action by suffering a -4 to ac and giving the enemy a +4 to damage, i think this means any action even activating total defense. Normaly this would not alow me the extra attacks of opportunity, but with Active Sheild Defense i would be allowed the attacks of opportunity. This would leave me with my AC intact without penalty, however if i am still hit they get their +4 damage, but for every attack they swing i get an attack of opportunity. I think this combo possibly combined with several other feats would allow this to be a great combo; however my freind feels that this cannot combine. This is due to the fact he feels when you take a total defense stance you cannot take robilars gambit as it is effectivly dropping your guard to allow them to hit you in exchange to hit them. In my defense i stated that Active Sheild Defense was Sheild related and Robilars Gambit was dex related thus if i wished to take a penalty on my dex then it would not affect my Sheild defense. I am very unsure about how these two would work together it seems plausable. Can someone help me out with opinions or an official in-the-text ruling from WTC. Thanks

10-20-06, 05:40 PM The trick works. It's basically a very defensive style of combat, fencing in essence - you wait for your opponent to open up his defenses before striking yourself.
You should, however, realize that your AoOs still take the -4 penalty.

All in all, I personally doubt it's going to be that effective. You forego all of your attacks for a number of AoOs and run the risk of receiving more damage.

Neither the one nor the other agument have any merit ruleswise.

10-20-06, 05:42 PM There is no real in-text answer to this problem, howver if your DM makes a ruling, that ruling stands. Do not try to rules lawyer your DM when you find something he doesn't like. The only thing the players handbook does say is that you do not attack or perform any other action than moving your speed, how the DM interpets that is up to him.
