Do you charge extra for magic items you create for other team members ?

To compensate for the lost of xps.

I thinking to charge 5 gp per xp.

Do you charge and how much if you do?

You mean, beyond the market value of the item, or beyond the cost to create the magic item?

There is no reason for characters to know how much an item is worth. They don't have access to the DMG like we do. ^_^ No character should say "Hey, this +1 greatsword is worth exactly 2,350 gold pieces." An item is worth what the seller/maker can get for it.

I've never actually been in this situation before, but I doubt I would. XP loss is annoying, but as long as said item is for the overall good of the party, you're benefiting.

My DM has houseruled it that the person who wants the item supplies the experience. You might try that.

our Dm had a similair houserule to the one above, the crafter and the one who gets the item splits the xp penalty

We replaced crafting xp costs with Craft Points, (http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/altvogge/pcaltvogge.html) and no one takes an xp hit. :)

I generally ask for 75% of market value to create an item for a party member. They still get a nice discount, and I have something to show for all that lost XP. It's a good deal all around.

That depends on the ingame relationships the character has with the other partymembers.

- If my character is a wizard in a party full of good friends, he'll only ask money for the materials used (or asks them to buy the materials).
- If my character is a wizard in a party which just helps him on a quest, but who aren't his friends, he'll give a small discount.
- If my character is a wizard in a party he only hangs out with because he need something they have/can provide, he'll ask the full price (and if he is selfish enough, he'll try to overcharge them)

Yeah, that's pretty much the key there. I've had PC's make items at materials costs for other party memebers, but I wouldn't do it with my character. Those xp hits add up over time if you're the party's magic maker. Five gp per xp is pretty much the standard "wholesale" rate in the DMG and not unfair at all. It's still cheaper than the base price after all.

I'm currently asking nothing at all for items I make. Playing a psion, who scribbles useful tattoos and suchlike, and the PCs all grew up together. Noone's caught on yet, but the poor kid (16, and oldest of the bunch...what were we thinking) is worried sick that something might happen to these closest of friends and is bleeding herself dry to help them. Also buys trunks full of healing potions and deals them out, never collecting on the 'debt'. I'm wondering when they'll notice :)

Of course, the wizard I played before this psion charged full price, just because she could. No competition from other mages, as the party was exploring wild, wild lands beyond civilisation. If they wanted custom items, they payed custom price.

All in all, it really depends on the character en his/her relation to the other PCs.

Do you charge extra for magic items you create for other team members ?Do you mean 'extra' over the normal creation cost, or 'extra' over the normal price. The former is not unreasonable - anything between creation and normal cost gives the crafter a 'profit' and the 'buyer' a discount. The 5gp:1exp ratio seems to be used in a few places. IIRC, it works out to charging 70% of the list cost for items you make...

Not that the exp loss is all that devestating. If you do fall a level behind the rest of your party, you start gaining more exp each session...

I think it explained somewhere, in the Arms and Equipment Guide I belive, that the multiple people may be in the enchanting process. Such as one person to supply the XP (And set any command words/ect.) a wizard to supply an arcane spell, and a cleric to supply a divine spell. So, in essence, you could have the other party members supply the XP and Gold, and you just enchant the dumb thing.

But I could be, and probably am, wrong.

To my experience, the fighters sometimes die on the frontlines and lose their XP, while the wizards hide with invisibility and have so much contingency going off that, in a random battle that's not designed to kill them, they simply won't die.

So, if your wizard is hoarding his XP up while your fighter is dying, I think he should be able to grab that wimp by the collar and shout "I'm giving my life for us out there and you won't even make me an ITEM!?"

Making an item should be how casters and fighters stay in line as far as levels go.

Now, yes, of course, wizards can die easy. So don't get started on that. But the only times they're going to die is if someone's specifically hunting the party (like a sort of strike team, or minions of the BBEG, or the BBEG himself) and that's rare at best.

Depends on the item being made, what type of relationship my caster has with the player who wants the item, the total expense, and XP loss.

My Artificer in our Eberron game always makes stuff for the party. I give each party member a 15% discount. Since I have the artisan feat which reduces the cost to create by 25%, everyone is happy; my party gets quality items for 15% off, and I make a 10% profit. It's a win/win situation.
