| Airic42704-11-06, 08:12 PM | I started off the campaign as a Human Cleric of a Lawful God, depending on the group of the church you belonged to controls your alignment of Good, neutral, evil. Let me just say that the main tenants of the god is Law, Justice, and Pain. Being the righteous healer i am I choose LG. But through some unfortunate events (we work for the church in wartime) we can receive no gold and any items we find in the field must be given to our superiors. To save some of our comrades i decide to make bargains or deals that would be unatainable to make. DO to the incredibly hard nature of the tasks. Anyhow I save my comrades but am repremanded by my superiors. I can not make good on one of my deals and my contract gets turned over to a devil. My party members now all dislike me because i consort with devils. And all i encounter within the know of the church call me the "dark one". Even though i never commited evils acts. Well It comes time to get a prestige class and im all for it i can become an inquisitor. (the catch i cant know anything about the class unless i take it.) NEver one to pass up super powers :) I take the bait. The inquisitors do not search for the truth they torture thos who commit crimes to teach them the way of the law. Yeah pretty twisted. WEll suffice to say i can't payback the 2nd devil who held my contract. Now the contract is bought out by the very first inquisitor who lives on the plane if LAw MEchanis, My DM takes my character sheet and leaves me with no information other then every day i learn the meaning of LAw and Pain. Oh yeah i pretty much die each day but am alive for new pain the next. THis goes on for about 6months character time. Well my comrades finally rescue me but now i am LAwful evil am surrounded by the feat earie pressence and can no longer spontaneaously heal or turn undead. I can cause pain at will in place of cure and control undead instead of turning them. Yeah that helps the whole "dark one" image im trying to remove. Forgot to mention we play in a heavy undead campaign which to no suprise angers my comrades to no extent that the undead now call me master instead of runnning away or being obliterated. How the hell can a LG healer becaome a LE undead controler who is feared and despised by his comrades. Oh wo is me. any one else have similar stories of being made the outcast by a dm? |
| DaMullet04-11-06, 08:17 PM | No, but I will sing a song for you. Na na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na na, Hammergun! For your DM's birthday, buy him some suspenders and a conductor's hat. |
| Prator_the_Legendary04-11-06, 08:35 PM | I feel manipulated all the time. Seriously, in the campaigns my brother/DM directs, the players don't do the moving. The DM just pushes us from room to room, and we decide how to deal with encounters. We don't even get to decide WHICH room, most of the time. If we go what the DM deems to be the "wrong" way, we get blocked by some kind of impassable obstacle that we can't remove, never mind the fact that our party consists of epic level superheroes. |
| kelvinaw27304-11-06, 08:35 PM | Well, it doesn't sound too good, but .... you dealt with incredibly powerful supernatural evil entities, to whit, devils, and broke your contract. WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? A visit from a nice lady with a repayment plan? Six months of torture could brainwash anyone, pretty much, especially if they have already compromised their morals enough to deal with devils, joined a secret society of torturers (I mean, have you not HEARD of the Spanish Inquisition? :banghead: ) I strongly suggest that as you character has clearly become twisted and evil by events beyond his control, you start role-playing his redemption from darkness by becoming a penitant, refusing to use inflict spells, and demand the highest moral standards from yourself and your allies. Give money to orphans, rescue starving puppies and hug trees. Always remember in ANY game, the first and last rule on dealing with demons and devils is this: DON'T! |
| Airic42704-11-06, 08:41 PM | im gonna roll with it. he gave me access to some pretty bad ass spells and i have my task to complete. I got my ace in the whole i can turn into and infernal devil for my final conflict :) I feel manipulted but am loving every moment of it. I just keep telling myself out of character: "he still a good guy he just sees the need of dealing with devils to defeat devils" |

Dude, if he deals with devils, he ain't not good guy! The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and your character is adding an extra lane! |
| Marvos04-12-06, 12:08 AM | I think being manipulative is part of a DM's job description. And to echo one of the earlier posters: what did you expect dealing with a devil? |
| Vacerious04-12-06, 12:39 AM | Yeah, man. Devils always get their dues, and man, the interest is what kills ya (yes, I'm aware that makes no damned sense whatsoever, but deal with it.) Still, I'm glad that you're deciding to run with what you got. I've always wanted to play an evil cleric who dealt with infernal and abyssal outsiders. Still, friend, what you've experienced wasn't 'manipulation'. Around here, the term is 'railroading.' Also, do you have some form of reading disorder or something, because your posts are a little difficult to read. |
| Deacon Liadon04-12-06, 05:58 AM | As a player? No, my DM is pretty free with what he let's us do. We can make our own choices. As a DM, I can only say: "Dance puppets, Dance" |
| DaMullet04-12-06, 11:53 AM | Six months of torture could brainwash anyone, pretty much, especially if they have already compromised their morals enough to deal with devils, joined a secret society of torturers (I mean, have you not HEARD of the Spanish Inquisition? ) No one suspects the Spanish Inquisition!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH!!! |
| DM_Greatness04-12-06, 01:00 PM | No, but I will sing a song for you. Na na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na na, Hammergun! For your DM's birthday, buy him some suspenders and a conductor's hat. I totally agree. DaMullet has won this thread :gift: |
| Senevri04-12-06, 01:26 PM | No one suspects the Spanish Inquisition!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH!!! No-one expects the Senshi Inquisition! I must say, though, I didn't really understand the OP... However, if one is _trying_ to play a good guy and you get still placed into a bad guy's role... I can see how that could be annoying. As for being manipulated by a DM... If the DM can't manipulate the players, he's clearly doing something wrong. ^_~ But... I nth what others have said. |
| Doopliss04-12-06, 02:27 PM | So, just to see if I get the gist of what happened... You couldn't get any items or gold in the field, so you made bargains with many not-terribly-evil folks for equipment and gold. You couldn't fill one of the bargains, so the contract got passed to a devil without your consent. (Whaaa!?) As well as your reputation going down the drain, you were punished for six months and are now evil... If you eventually decide not to roll with it, you could try to get an atonement spell from the first friendly good-aligned cleric you meet. Sounds like you're doing pretty well, though. Enjoy. :) |
| kelvinaw27304-12-06, 06:12 PM | I think we need to make a distinction here: The DM has not manipulated the character, the devil (controlled by the DM) has manipulated the character. I have to say, though, that he has done it very well. The character has turned evil by his actions and the player is saying he is still one of the good guys ... I mean, how better a representation of misguided ideals leading to a downfall can you get? Kudos to the DM, he has done most well! :tiphat: |
| Vaelan04-12-06, 07:01 PM | I have to say, though, that he has done it very well. No, he hasn't, and I feel insulted as an accomplished manipulator that you even think such a thing. This is nothing more than DM fiat. DM: You're Evil now. |
| Airic42704-12-06, 07:09 PM | Well when i made my original deal it was not with a devil. It was when i could not complete the incredibly hard task that my contract was bought out by a devil. Also, the original deal was not for weapons or magic items or money, it was to get help in defeating an  Evil cleric. You know the whole bad guy thing kills innocents and raises the dead sort of thing. As a character i have not performed on single Evil deed, and i never chose to control the dead it happened by DM interpretation. |

You know the whole bad guy thing kills innocents and raises the dead sort of thing. As a character i have not performed on single Evil deed, and i never chose to control the dead it happened by DM interpretation. My misunderstanding, I thought you had signed a deal with a devil knowingly. If you didn't sign with the devil, you should not have been beholden to one, period. I take it back, this is a bit of DM railroading. Sounds to me like he just wanted to turn you evil regardless of your thoughts on the matter, which is badly done. My suggestion, tell the Dm you are going on a quest for atonement. If he refuses, take your character out of the game and rrefuse to play him any more. Ultimately, players have this authority: They can refuse to play. If the DM tells you you have to play that character the way he has rebuilt it, tell him that you see no point in continueing in this campaign. It might be an idea to get the input of the other players on the matter, too. Do they like the way you have been treated? |
| Trarth04-12-06, 08:28 PM | Technically, it is the DM's job to manipulate you. Other wise the game would be like Elder scrolls with no main story line, whether they temp you with treasure, goods, or elf women, we do it in some way or another. But railroading is stupid and makes the players less happy. For example, the mayor forces you to go rescue his daughter, if you don't, his immensly powerful, yet unable to live the city, guards pwn you, and then put you in jail until you agree to do it, any venturing off results in being chased by a dragon. I hate railroading, but with out a plot, there is no story. And with no story, there are no heroes, and with no heroes, there is no fun. |
