ok I play an elven bard 10 seeker of the song 4 and I have died like 5 times I've gotten true resurrected every time, but thats damn expensive every time I get some money I have to use almost all of it to get true ressed. first time I died that was cause I was caught off gaurd were in a desert looking for a blue dragon and it pops up and lightning bolts the party for like 80 damage. ok situational then were fighting a kraken like creature and a glabrezu appears and pinches me to death ouch. then were in a catacomb and the dm says make a spot check I roll a 3 ok those who failed are caught in a web and giant spiders bite you make two fort saves ok I fail both I lose like 8 con and then take damage from each bite ( turns out they were bebeliths). ok then were still in the catacombs and undead umberhulks and a deathknight appear I cast haste on the party then cast displacement on the paladin fighting the deathknight and the deathknight attacks me and not the paladin hitting it with a +3 greatsword or the cleric or the wizard no the damn elven bard playing a harp. Ok now we find the lich we were looking for in the catacombs it casts mordenkainens disjunction I lose some magic Items other characters lose alot of magic items then it cast meteor swarm on me I take the bludeoning damage and then praise my self for spending so much on a ring of fire res 15 then he casts a sonic replacement fire ball and I die. The way I play my bard is a party buffer you know cast haste displacement sing inspire courage and inspire greatness I cast healing spells cure light/med/serious/crit on people that are messed up, and use some magic wands when I get a chance. but the dm always seems to target me and not the wizard, or the necromancer, or the ranger, or the paladin,or the dwarven frenzied berserker, or dwarven defender, or the favored soul. maybe its just all in my head but nobody else in the party dies as much as me any suggestions?

I normally would side with the DM in such cases, but I really do think your DM wants you dead. Well, not as a person duh, but I think he might be one of those dm's that just plain don't like bards. Yes there are some. Why don't you confront him about it. Tell him how ridicolous it is, because that's what it is.

Well, to me, it sounds as if your DM doesn't know what he is doing. However I am not there and this is only one side of the story. Perhaps he thinks undead always go after the "buffers" or generally just hate music.

Here is what you do.. get some way to levitate or fly. Then Invisible. Play Country, because for some reason everyone loves country music, and stay away from the melee. Get Entropic Shield and let those fingers to the walkin while the Fighters do the talkin...

Be a gracious performer and bow after every battle.

well it doesn't really make since the party said a bard would be a good thing to try after my rogue character died, and the dm kinda liked the idea. the rogue had died like 6 or 7 times nasty traps and bad rolls for stats oh and don't try and tumble past an elder fire elemental no matter if you have a high dex elven chain and dodge and mobility. well enough of my old rouge and lets talk about my bard. could it be he's trying to kill the weakest character first? or does he just not like me trying to find particular magic items when I get alot of gold. I try and find a lyre of building to help the dwarves build a bridge you cant' find one, ok I try being less specific can I find anything to improve my con no. Can I find any kind of magic instrument no stop asking. Can I buy a wand of cure serious or any wand that heals no but they have a staff of healing for 27,000gp. and other party members are like can I buy a bag of holding why sure, can I find a portable hole yeah they've got 2 for sale, a ring of regen yes but its 100,000gp can I make a 75 ft flying ship made of darkwood powered by air elementals and wtih catapults and ballistas well sure but it'll cost 60,000gp for the ship and youll have to talk to the mages guild about binding elementals to this plane. and you'll have to get a crew and pay them a salary. oh and about the blue dragon death in the prev post the reason we were looking for a blue dragon was so the necromancer could make a dragon flesh gollem.(dont laugh everything I've said is true) or maybe my dm hates me cause I'm still kinda new to this game I've only been playing for about a year but I know all the rules to the phb. I try not to metagame but sometimes it just slips not very often but once in a while. what I maen by metagaming is maybe knowing the stats to a magic item or the price. I get bored at college and read d&d material and read forums like this. and I dont physically sing I just say my bard plays his harp and stops a round later the effects last 10 rounds +2 attk +2 dmg could it be he really wants me to sing, I hope not.

Well, most of these situations are a bit out of context, but it certainly does sound like he hates you. Or maybe he hates your characters. Are your characters a pain in the ass for the party?

I know where you're coming from, though. See, I have someone in my group that hates me having any kind of power. It comes to the point where I usually play a rogue with Improved Unarmed Strike, because I know any kind of weapon I would ever draw in his campaign is going to be sundered. Usually by creatures that have less intelligence than bread mold.

On top of that, if he has us roll for stats, he always lowers my stats. Always. Oh, and a racial bonus can't put a stat at over 18.

Let me give an example of a character I once generated for his campaign. The sad thing is, I still have this character sheet. This is my Star Elf rogue, by the way.

The stats I rolled - 18,16,13,12,11,8.

The stats I wound up with - 15,13,12,10,8,7.

I wasn't allowed to take Two Weapon Fighting, because it was "too powerful for rogues."

Synergy bonuses for skills no longer existed. And, by the way, I'm the only one in the group that gets these stigmas. It's because it's well known that I'm a min/maxer. Of course, I always keep myself in check.

So you know what I did? I stopped playing under him as a DM. He's perfectly allowed to play under me, or together under another DM, because then he has no control over me. Do I get mad or anything? No. It's just a game.

If the game isn't fun, don't play it. There are people out there who should be denied access to the DMG. So when you find them, avoid them. ^^

I'll second this.
Third!

Are you the only one taking this abuse or is it spread out among the party more or less equally?

If everybody's getting killed on a regular basis - welcome to a vicious dungeon. Some are just like that.

If it's just you biting the bullet so regularly, then:

a) The DM hates you and there ain't nuttin' you can do about it. :(

or

b) You're not a very capable player and are continually making poor choices that result in you getting your *** smacked.

It comes down to this, If you're not enjoying the game - stop playing the game. I would ask the DM OOG if he has it in for you or whether you're just making poor decisions. If he says the latter, then ask him how you might improve. Chances are he has some ideas that might help you survive the slaughter. If you ask - then Listen.

Well, I DM and I sometimes find that pain in the ass characters are ones who end up dying. I don't punish for powerful characters, unless it is an obviously powerful guy or the cheated on their rolls (18,18,18,16,14,18 are not natural rolls, well, could be, but very unlikely). Someone who just picks out your guy to kill him has a problem with you. I'd ask him about it.

Ok maybe halo was a bad example of a game that you die alot in. Back to D&D then main thing I hate about having died 5 times and getting true ressed 4 times is thats about 100,000 gp think of all the swag my character could have to make him that much better. and my rolls for the bard were 14 str, 15 dex, 14 con, 14 int, 12 wis, 17 cha which applied to a elven bard build went like this 14 str, 17dex, 12 con, 14 int, 12 wis, 17 cha

Actually, the enemy AI gets a tad bit keener. Every try to use a turret on legendary? All you'll see is about five plasma grenades flying at you. By the way, the secret to winning is in two weapons. The sniper rifle, and the needler. ^^

ANY dm who sees stats rolled and says no that's to high and start lowering it needs to not be a DM anymore. If rolling high stats is an issue, that is what point buy is for. If the said DM does not realize this, he doesn't know the rules enough to be a DM yet. Either way, please take the DMG away from him before he gets hurt...by say oh a hammer gun.

A DM who doesn't let certain classes take feats they quilify for also once again needs to not be a DM anymore. Changing said requirements is one thing...but to say no you as a rogue can't is a HUGE nono...and once again, the DMG must be taken away...for his own safety...from the gattling hammer gun.

Back to the OP, umm why is the level 14 party against a level 22+ lich?!? Metor means at least 17 caster levels and lich is +5...no wonder you died...the whole party should have dies...in like 3 rounds. This DM from that example along has NO idea what he is doing.

You have to be the most patient mellow role player in the world. Gandhi would have jumped over the table and beat that DM's a$$.

What's the point of random stats if they’re just going to arbitrarily changed? Would he have raised them if you had rolled like a 9, 9, 8, 5, 3, 3? I get the impression he would've just smirked and made you keep them.

He must be one hell of a friend away from the game for you to consider playing at the same table as him.

If I every do that to a player I'll have myself euthinized.

As far as away from the game, meh. He's a friend of a friend, and I don't mind his company. And he's really not a bad player. Just a bad DM.

PCs often die in my campaign, I believe it keeps them in check (we're like 15 year olds so sometimes they will think I won't let them die), and I'm a F13 fan so I like a good amount or gore, but it seems so far that your taking deaths a lot more then anyone else. It could be

a) He's not fudging the rolls and your just getting unlucky
b) He could have a problem with your character, not so much the race or class but just the PC itself
c) He simply enjoys PC deaths (but I don't know him so I can't really jump to that)

I'd simply talk to him about it, there are only two traits I really hate in a DM, those who will kill you just for kicks (I usually do it to build up the climax, amazing how fun it is when they lose a Wizard & fighter and are still able to defeat the BBEG before another one dies), and those who won't kill you no matter how badly you deserve it (I've played under both).

And don't worry man, I also suck at Halo :)

Well lets see I'm level 14 cause I didn't have the money to get true ressed once, and I missed one game and they pulled from the bones( its the dms version of the deck of many things) and one of the rolls was fight an ancient black dragon. Needless to say I missed alot of experience and a crap load of gold:weep:, and they found an artifact.(the paladin had black dragon hide which he got magically enhanced to 30 acid res)

Here was the levels of the party and the pcs when we fought the lich. A natural weretiger Paladin/elemental warrior 15th level, a dwarven barbarian/frenzied berserker 16th, an elven ranger/order of the bow initiate 15th, a human wizard/cleric/elemental savant lightning/true necromancer 16th, a human sorceress/mage of the arcane order 14th, a human favored soul 15th, and me an elven bard/seeker of the song 13.
Bael the Bard

04-27-05, 10:46 AM
Heres the continuation of my last post. We heard tauntings from what we thought was the lich so then the paladin said something to like we've fought worse things than you or something. Then a nightwalker and a death wraith appeared, and the lich said something like have fun with one of my pets.

The favored soul got rid of the death wraith, and I buffed the paladin and the berserker so they could do more damage to the nightwalker. Then the lich appeared after that and cast mordenkainen's disjunction(see my other post for details) Then he cast meteor storm as a special ability.

The paladin decided it was time to use the artifact the horn of the Tarrasque( its one of his homebrew artifacts it summons a tarrasque or a mature adullt silver dragon) we chose the latter. The silver dragon immediatly started fighting the nightwalker. The sorceress had found a book on an alter and said hey Ya'll comere I found a cool book so I ran over there.

I ran over there end of my turn and then the lich cast a sonic replacement fireball for like 50 dmg I died. Then the lich did a second meteor storm as a special ability and they took some more dmg. More fighting the nightwalker died the dragon started attacking the lich, the lich cast energy drain on the paladin the paladin lost 8 lvs, the favored soul cast greater restoration from a scroll no more negative lvs. more fighting the lich died yeah.
Bael the Bard

I was the only one to die  we then found the treasure. a cloak of res +3, a ring of prot +4, Headband of intellect +6, a tomb of understanding +5 that also told of a ritual to become and angel called a protectar, a ring of rapid healing, 80,000GP, 18,000GP worth of gems, 60,000GP worth of art, 15,000PP, and his spellbook with 9th Lv spells in it. The treasure was worth it, but the fighting sucked.

We then found what we thought to be the phylactery an inanimate gollem made of some kind of metal, then all of a sudden the ground started shaking violently and a huge demon was released and then we ended that session there. We asked the dm about the lich, he said it was a wizard 13/archmage5 with meteor swarm as a 2 per day ability and a lich has a +4adj so a CR22 for a party of about 15thlv characters.
The nightwalker was a CR16 and the deathwraith was a cr 11. Maybe the dm is just trying to TPK us and I'm the only one he manages to kill. then again maybe trying to fight something 9 levels higher than you and being a bard has something to do with it.
Bael the Bard

04-27-05, 03:30 PM
ok maybe my posts are a little too much for most people to digest, here let me para phrase. Do you think I am dying because the dm is pitting us against stuff at least 5-10 levels higher than our current level? Well the lich was 9 higher than me and about 7 more than the party, but still every battle we've encountered since about 12 level has been at least 19 or 20 somethin. When I was 11 level we fought a kraken like creature with a cr 19, I think my dm is insane. The party I'm in is between 6 and 8 characters but usually 7, maybe my dm thinks we can take this stuff because there are so many of us.

The same thing happens to me. I have a Human Rogue. He has died no less than 6 times. True ressied once. So yes... that means I lost 5 (and an extra half) levels.

I am level 9 the rest of the party is 14 and up.

The first time I died, was the first hour I played him. He was confronted by a group of 8 evil clerics, one cast slay living on me. (I was freakin 1st level)

Second time I died, a dragon turtle used their breath weapon on me. My DM refused to give me a saving throw. He said nope your in a hallway, no saving throw. I have 34hp and just got dealt 20d6 damage, no saving throw.

Third time I had my soul captured by the lord of hell. (had to make a FORT save of 30 to not die. Then to top it all off, I lost a level and a half, not a 1, 1 1/2)

Fourth time I got stuck in a trap.... no saving throw. (I know... wtf. Didn't even roll damage, he said "You die") True ressied this time.

Fifth time I actually died a regular death.. no complaints here.

Sixth time I was Coup de Graced in my sleep. (for no reason, some random guy apparently decided to kill me)

I asked the dm why'd you put us against a cr 22 lich, his reply was he wasn't a cr 22 he was 20. Then I said well the MM says lichs get a +4 lv adj 13wiz/5archmage+4 =22, then he said, he wasn't a lich he was a half lich. I'm like ookk :uh-huh: what the hell is a demilich he said its from libris mortis.
He knows what he's doing I think he just wants us to get to epic quicker.

Oh and I'm sorry about your rogue golchocobo(love the name FF rules) ,reminds me of the character I played before the bard. Don't try and set up flanks against trolls claw claw bite rend hurts like hell.
Don't try and tumble past the elder fire elemental to give the paladin your sword of the planes to fight the elemental, unless you like the smell and taste of cooked elf. After that fight I asked my dm if I could play another character I wanted to try another rogue and multiclass into shadow dancer, but then someone suggested bard, skip a few months we're here now. By the way what kind of side quest could a bard do and not get killed horribly? If I got just one level that would be enough to catch up but from 14-15 thats like 14,000 exp points.

My 3rd ed ranger.... sucky.... my DM let me change him around, so I made him a cool deepwood sniper.... wicked awsome... the first day of this, we get attacked by a beholder and some other stuff.... the first the the beholder does is charm me, paralyze me, and desintegrate me. My ranger didn't like the paladin... but the DM did... nuff said.

So, i make a cool elf bard/shadowdancer. very storyline-flavorful. First, the barbarian gets in a bar fight with a bunch of drow and i save him with temporary hit points and convinceeing an orc to help my buddy out and i'll give him a favor later (wink wink).... so when the battle is over, the orc rapes me... my shadow pet does nothing... my party members don't hear me...

then comes the day that the DM had two friends from another game he plays in come to visit. one was an aristocrat, the other was unknown.

so later... the druid (who was turnign evil and later became a vampire druid) was about to start a big fight in a bar, i charmed him and convinced him to step outside with me. we get surrounded by 11 lvl 6 rogues. they let the druid go, and I try to hide in plain site. I got a 40+ hide check. the rogues didn't even have to make their spot checks.. they automatically succeeded.

the DM said that a rogues dagger was still in me. My bard wakes up on a small boat being shipped off to a ***** island.

no one rememberd the many times i saved the party, they only remember the time I got raped and then call me a *****.

turns out, it was the unknown(assassin) guy's birthday, and for his present, my DM gave him a PC....
