| mikevw203-23-05, 09:25 PM | I need to find some way to print area spell templates. Like a 30 foot cone, or 20 foot radius. For fireball, breath weapons, etc. I can't seem to find any online that I can just print and my DM does not want to cut them out of the book. Can someone point me in the right direction. |

Why not just photocopy them? |
| mikevw203-23-05, 09:51 PM | Doing that will make the template askew. Won't be true to size because of the binding. |
| Feriin03-23-05, 11:37 PM | You're kidding right? If not how about tracing a template. Better yet learn some basic math, thats what 3.0 and 3.5 are about. |
| Sjorna03-24-05, 05:34 AM | All previous insults to your intelligence aside, in the most recent Dragon magazine(or maybe it was Dungeon) there was an order form for templates in regards to spell areas and such. Check those out, our DM just ordered them. |
| mikevw203-24-05, 08:38 AM | I was trying to avoid buying them. And as far as the cheap shot to my intelligence....well, duh. Of course I can do that, that's what we've been doing. The template would streamline the game and we wouldn't have to waste time counting. I also play Warhammer were templates are used, and there are still arguments over how many models are covered because people don't know how to use them. Wasting time when you are limited sucks when you have to little time to spare. Thanks anyway, I may have to look into that Dragon Magazine. |
| Vatras03-24-05, 08:44 AM | Do it my way and just draw and color your own, it takes not much longer than an hour to do it properly. |
| mikevw203-24-05, 09:27 AM | Do you use any particular paper? or would you use cardboard, wood? |
| Phrennzy03-24-05, 09:58 AM | There's a company that produces Wire Frame templates. With my player's wizard casting web every game, we broke down and bought two 20' radius templates. Thank God. They have helped so much. We tried to bend a wire coat hanger to work, and we did a pretty good job of it too. But in the end we went with the premade because they were snazzier. I believe they also have cones. Steel Sqwire (http://www.steelsqwire.com/) I don't work for them or anything - I just like the product. |
| Thoronmir03-24-05, 10:05 AM | I made my templates using colored transparency film. If you can’t find that at Staples or Office Depot, pick up a few report binders with colored, transparent covers (like the things we used for reports in college) and carve your templates out of the covers. If you must, you can resort to clear transparency film, but it doesn’t show up as well. I use a razor-knife to cut out the templates. When using the templates, we position a template per the rules for the specific spell (centered on a blast radius, a cone emanating from the caster, etc.). The advantage to using transparency film is that … well … you can see through it. That lets us place the template on the combat map and still see the grid squares below. It’s very effective when your Fireball’s blast area shows up on the map as a large, red, transparent circle. We usually mark each miniature’s position so we are sure to place them back on their proper squares after we place the template on the map. I have a large collection of templates of varying sizes and colors … a battle among two or three mages looks very pretty … like a rainbow of destruction. :D |
| psionichamster03-24-05, 10:39 AM | i did the same thing as thoronmir, but of course, i used opaque cardboard (from a shoebox) right now, i've got about a half-dozen Large and Huge "counter circles" that i use to represent summons, and a single 40'cylinder/20'radius blast template (a la, stinkning cloud, fireball, icestorm, etc...) next ones are probably going to be a 60' (12") line, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 ft cones (we like to use widen...a lot) and perhaps a couple of 20' bursts (for them webs) i will definitely be getting some trans. film for the next batch...i assume you simply place the template below the minis, and whatever's touched gets hit? namaste, the hamster |
| Nytmare03-24-05, 11:56 AM | I had made print outs onto transparencies for my game's templates, but the wire frames are closer to what I think I want. My main problem with the solid templates is that you have to remove and replace figures to drop the template and it sucks up time. An open outline of the template would quicken the process and make things less confusing. |
| Clawhound03-24-05, 12:38 PM | Our GM went to the art store, bought platic sheets, and cut out his own. They're great! |

| Stuntman03-24-05, 07:10 PM | You can just make them yourself using graph paper of the appropriate grid size. Calculate whether or not each square is in or out of the area of effect, mark them so, then cut them out and paste onto cardboard. If you want them to be transparent, just put a transparency over top and trace them with a permanent marker and then cut them out. You may want to use some cardboard for the frame so it holds in place when you put them over top of the battle grid. |
| Dargan Griess03-24-05, 11:57 PM | Buy one of the D&D minis starter sets (or just a map from someone with a couple of starters) and cut as many as you want out of the map grid. |
| Phrennzy03-25-05, 03:41 PM | I had made print outs onto transparencies for my game's templates, but the wire frames are closer to what I think I want. My main problem with the solid templates is that you have to remove and replace figures to drop the template and it sucks up time. An open outline of the template would quicken the process and make things less confusing. That's exactly why I bought mine. Too many damn web spells. I hate that spell. |
| therston03-25-05, 04:12 PM | There is also ways to get the book on the internet and just copy pasting them onto Excel or another template program. |
| PurdueDave03-25-05, 11:31 PM | If you haven't found it yet just send me an e-mail and I'll send it to you. I got it off the internet but can't recall where. |
