I am curently in a campaign that is very dragon heavy. we are using dragon magic, races of dragon, and draconomicon among others. i am a second level glimmerskin human (a DM varient) fighter. he has the dragon wings, dragon tail, and power attack feats. I plan on taking the Dragon devotee-Dragon disciple combo. now here my problem: my DM has a tendency to make us face things that have a higher CR than what we are ready for. as of right now our characters are unable to get resources (being in a dungeon at the moment) and we are low on money anyways. what could I do to increase my characters survival rate. have a bard, cleric/ warmage, monk, and a psion (shaper) in party, all level 2.

also, the next game is this saturday so I need help soon. we also had a runin with some fire mephits that destroyed my armor so I'm stuck with a +1 battle axe, a damaged small steel sheild, my tail and the wits of my party. which leaves much to be desired.

Unless there's a time limit why not head back to town.Cruise around close to town looking for random encounters.Strip enemy dead of their armor, this is called "cashing in the empties"and is good way to get cash at low level.

Is their anyway you can talk to your DM and ask him to slow his roll? Tell him that your really not enjoying the game to the fullest since he is attacking wile you have no means to defend yourself effectivly... Maybe he could give you a few missions just to level up a bit...

I don't think many low level encounters will have armor suitable for a person with tail and wings.

Well,I would normally go with stripping enemy armor and selling it to buy my own(don't know if I made that clear judging by derren s post).Perhaps you could push a table ahead of you for cover like a mid-evil mantlet?Hold a hostage in front of you if evil? Some barbarians wrap themselves in hide?Check dead carefully to see if they have a magic item you missed?Use a reach weapon to hold enemies at bay?RANDOM THOUGHTS

all good thoughts. but we curently lack a reach weapon, there is a table but the room its in has these 4 hammerers. most of what we have seen (which isn't much) are mephets. and we do have 3 leather armors... made for a non-winged, non-tailed humanoid. also this is the final call for any extra ideas. the games tomorow at 11 in the morning. will probably leave sooner. there's a diferent game tonight at 6 to 10. so I will check this thread again in an hour. and tomorow before I leave if possible.

well, I'm going to write this next part with the assumption that I live.

He focuses on strength, but is good in all ability scores. assuming he lives to 20th level he will definatly be worthy of being a dragon. he will be have almost all attack forms of a dragon. as soon as possible he will take that feat available to half dragons that allows them to use their breath weapon every couple of rounds, this will have to wait until epic. in epic levels he will continue as either an epic dragon disciple or finish his fighter levels.

Prepare a fortified area in a big room and see if you can lure enemies to you?A big room could allow you to soften up the enemy with ranged attacks?

Dude! that is the stategic thinking we need! thanks! in fact I think I know the perfect room. we are going to have to melt the ice in the room first, but that should be no problem. there was a frozen chair in there I think.

When you're as weak as a kobold you have to fight like a kobold,do you have what it takes to TRAPMAKE like put broken glass on floor as caltrops, perhaps a mat of burnable material the enemy will charge across and you can set fire to?RANDOM THOUGHTS

Kobold? we are chasing a Kobold, but we don't have one in the party. anyway good news bad news.
good news: I survived as did the rest of the party, just barely.

bad news: we found a longspear. being the fighter I picked it up. lost a level and took 6 points of constitution damage. turns out it is the dragon slayer. dragonkind can not weild it less they want to take the kind of punishment I took. luckily I made level. we also fought 3 rust monsters.

idea: I am going to try to use the antenae of the rust monsters into a whip. thus creating a rust whip.

I wouldn't allow the rust whip in my game.I suggest re-setting the ambuscade and using the dead like sandbags(actual WWI tactic).Consider finding a room you can barricade yourself in?Have an out-of-game chat with your thief and mage about appraising, detect magic, and using knowledge arcana on found items!!!GOOD LUCK

Get yourself into a room with only one way in. Barricade the door using backpacks, swords, dead enemies, anything! Roll out the bedrolls, asign shifts, and its off to dreamland. Spend a full day resting and have the cleric burn all his/her spells on healing for the day. If all goes well, you should be by with only minor distubances which you can handle. Be sure the cleric saves all his spells for the day for healing, because you will probably need it. Another survival tactic: the fighting defensively and total defense actions. This is where it pays to have taken the wing manuvers tactical feat (when fighting defensively, flutter wings to gain total concealment). That ought to boost your AC a bit and lessen the blows that come to you.

Do you have any oil? This may sound stupid, very stupid, but it works, trust me. If you find yourself in pursuit, have everyone take out the flask of oil that they carry around with them and spill it on the floor before taking their move action. When the enemy comes barreling past, they will have to make reflex/balance checks to stay on their feet. When they slip, throw a torch on the floor and watch the fireworks. I'll see if I can remember any other tricks that I've learned over the time ive been playing and get back to you on this.

(P.S. Where is your game located? A dragon-heavy campain that allows and encourages that use of my three favorite books sounds like heaven :D )

Consider a U -shaped ambush? If you wait in an intersection of two corridors(this is an X -shaped intersection)you can wait for enemy to advance and cede the intersection to him for tactical advantage?EX.you have 4 corridors(A,B,C,D,)as the enemy approaches down corridor A,your party splits into three groups and retreats downs corridors B,C,D.When the enemy reaches the intersection you can hit him from three sides, depending on facing and reach weapons this may allow everyone to engage simultanously?RANDOM THOUGHTS

Along the same lines of what taradusis just said, you can find a secure position, and then send the fastest/sneakiest person to scout out the area ahead. Have everyone else put arrows to their bows and load the bolts to crossbows. If the scout finds another strong posistion, you can move out. If the other charecters hear him running down the hall (probably screeming or giving some command word) they should all take ready actions to fire at the first thing that enters their area that is not their friend. As scout and monster go running by, everyone else gets to act in a surprise round, after which initiative is re-rolled. If you win, you've got the monster in the ideal position for an ambush and, with a little luck, you may be able to dispatch it in one or two turns before it can do any real damage.

Another thought: does the psion have charm person or do any of you have a good diplomcy/intimidate score? Knocking a humanoid or otherwise intelligent creature out and taking it hostage is a good way to get infomation about the dungeon you're in and where you can find supplies. The only tiny problem with this is that once you're through with them you typically have to decide what to do with them; this is ussually over a debate of killing the prisoner, letting him come with you (a descent choice if you can keep him/her/it under control, a walking map is always helpful), or to leave the creature tied up where you are. There is about a 50-50 chance that it will escape or be rescued, or that it will be killed/eaten by something else while in bonds.

One last thought: regarding the ambush above or any encounter really. I tried this once, and it worked well for me, but its really up to your dm judgement. Take a flask of oil and soak some spare sheets of paper or cloth that you can get from your enemies. Wrap this specially prepared substance around some of your arrows, and have at least one party member hold a torch. You can then light your arrows on fire shortly before shooting, which may result in extra fire damage, or even in lighting the opposition on fire.

If all else fails, never underestimate the value of a successful disarm/trip. If your opponent relies on one weapon to deal its damage, take it from him. Im guessing that as a fighter with dragon tail, you dont have a weapon of your own, which means your arent in danager of being similarly disarmed. If it uses natural weapons, trip it. You should have descent strength and if you win it has to either spend a full-round action getting up (prompting an Attack of opportunity) or take a penalty to its attack rolls and armor class.

Hope this helps.

Your DM is either incompetant and not paying attention, or trying to kill you. ONE fire mephit is a roughly average encounter for a group of 3rd level characters. Meaning, one of them would be a good challenge for your party of 5 2nd level characters. 5 2nd level characters are roughly a 2.6 Party Level, and 4 CR 3 Mephits are a CR 7 encounter.

Your DM is lining up encounters with a CR of just under 300% of what your party level is. That's BAD.
