Anders_the_ranger 06-08-05, 06:44 PM	One of my players recently requested playing a red dragon. i agreed becouse dragon magazine just published the rules for running a chromatic dragon. But the table in the mag confuses me. under the Hit Dice colum it says for 1st level his hit die is 1d12 then at second level it says 2d12 and for third it says 3d12 but for 4th it says 3d12. does he roll for example for a fith level character, roll 1d12+2d12++3d12+3d12+4d12? he did this and came up with 138hp which seems a little high what do you think? any help would be nice.
lucas 06-08-05, 07:01 PM	i think it could mean. 1st level he is a one hit dice dragon thats rolls 1d12. 2nd level he is a two hit dice dragon thats rolls 1d12 making it 2d12 in total. 3rd level he is a three hit dice dragon that rolls one more making him a three hit dice dragon. at frouth level he rolls none ocs it is still only a three hit dice dragon. and 5th level he rolls one more d12 making him a 4 dit dice dragon. now in saying that it is a dragon and they are kick ass, so i would not be shocked at the hp, i also think the key one is hit dice.
Mike W 06-08-05, 07:02 PM	The hit dice colum represents the total number of hit dice the character has. Monsterous classes are not balanced to gain a hit die every level - occasionally, they will forgo a hit die advancement in order to gain some special abilities. So a 5th level character would use the number of hit dice in the 5th level row - it looks like that would be 4d12.
Mizik 06-08-05, 07:09 PM	No it does not work like that at 5th level he should have 4d12 hitpoints (one hitdice goes to his LA (imaginary level that is there to balance out his charictor with a char of the equivlent level) It shows how many hitdice he should have at that level NOT how many hitponts he gets when he reaches that level If they allready have level progretion (including imaginary levels too) charted out you don't have to worry. IF it says LA (level adjustment) + a number then he adds that number onto his char level when creating his charictor. Example A wyrmling red dragon has an LA (level adjustment of +4) If the said charictor wanted to creat a level 13 he be a 9 hitdice dragon 9 (hitdice)+0(class levels)+ LA 4 (level adjustment)= 13 (equivlent charictor level. BUT IF he has what i think he has, A level by level progretion of a red dragon. you don't have to worry about this as it is allready calculated and LA is acounted for.
