I am in the process of creating a dragon shaman character (first character). I am trying to make up some background for him, since i'm a newb i would like to know what the vets think. Mostly originality and plausibility.

Mathius Tamron was a lieutenant in his home kingdoms military. He and was sent to lead an attack on a neighboring kingdom. The enemy was led by a renowned archer by the name of Ferra Ventalis. Mathius boldly challenged Ferra in a duel, she put an arrow in his heart. Mathius' army was defeated and a few remnants managed to retreat, but Mathius was left for dead. After both armies had departed a mysterious hand scooped him up. He awoke at the bottom of the nearby lagoon, his heart floated mere feet in fron of him in the clutches of a blue dragon. From that point on Mathius was bound to the dragon's will. If he could find a way to remove the magical barriers that held the dragon within the lagoon he could have his heart, and freedom back.

Well, I always like to know what level people are starting off at. It irks me a bit when first level characters have a history that includes "Killed 2 dozen orcs single handedly," "Saved the earth from certain damnation TWICE" etc. Your alignment would also play a signifigant role in this history. As the thrall of a dragon(which isn't a requirement of the class) you would probably be asked to do whatever you can to further the dragons own agenda, which could result in you knifing the other characters in their sleep to take their gold and valuables.

If you are new to the system try to keep things as simple as possible. You can complicate them all you want once you get a hang of how things work and how occasionally the DM can be extremely manipulative when it comes to a character's history.
Try this idea:
As a child you were always enamored by the stories of dragons, good, bad or otherwise. You were amazed by their capacity for good and evil, their ability to shape the world and you sought a way to attain the aforementioned power eventually stumbling upon another dragon shaman who enlightened you as to their workings. With this new found power you seek to better the world/yourself/yourself at others expense.

Or if you want to make a dark brooding character, as it seems to be the cool thing to do nowadays, just say a dragon killed your parents in front of your eyes(with fire being involved for drama) and now you seek to use their own draconic power against them.
