I am about to join a Dragonlance campaign set in the Age of Mortals and I have a question regarding Dark Elves.

In the campaign setting, When an elf is forced to become an outcast (usually by being evil, but also sometimes because they are considered a threat to their kin) they generally have to go through some sort of ritual.

What is the ritual/trial that Kagonesti Elves have to go through? I don't need exactness just a general idea beyond what is in the campaign setting book (all it says is that if they fail the trial, their tattoos become black and twisted).

You should probably put this in the official Dragonlance boards in the forum marked as Other Worlds.

The Cerimony of Darkness

The Elf in question is taken to the temple of E'li (Paladine) in Silvanost. There in the temple he is taken to the Circle of Darkness where he can protest his innocenence or admit his guilt. He then sees visions of what his new life as an outcast will be like while in the circle. If found guilty he is proclaimed a Dark Elf and ushered out of Silvanost, through the Silvanesti forest. Typically he is chided, harrassed, cursed, by every elf he sees along the way. If he has loved ones they typically weep uncontrolably as this is considered a fate worse than death to elves.

"Here is a dark mage! He is a criminal of the worst order. Look away from Dalamar Argent! Never speak his name again! Forbid him from the forrest if ever again you see him. He is dead to us. Here is a dark elf, here is a criminal......." (Actual quote from the novel Dalamar the Dark)

He is then taken to the western side of Silvanesti kingdom where they book passage on a ship for him, and tell the captain to drop him anywhere he pleases. I've never read much on Kagonesti dark elves but Im guessing it's much of the same. Perhaps not as cerimonious as the Kagonesti are more wild by nature. I'd venture a guess they have their own version of The Circle of Darkness though. You also need to remember in the Age of Mortals the elves have no home to be exiled from, so becoming a dark elf could be as easy as just being evil.

I suggest going to the www.dragonlance.com forums and posting the question there. I guarante you will get some serious Dragonlance gurus who will be more than happy to help you out. You can also try searching for info on the Dragonlance Nexus fan site. Plethora of awesome info there.

Hope that helps

I haven't read any instances with this in any of the books. I believe, I would just go with something that I thought up myself. Perhaps a ritual tattooing of the person to mark them as a dark elf? The Kagonesti are big on tattoos, it would make sense to me. Some sort of animal or plant symbol, like Belladona, or maybe a Crow?

Only the Silvanesti ritualistically brand and outcast their kind as Dark Elves.

Kagonesti, Qualinesti, and the Dargonesti have other methods, but none declare them dark elves.
