i am BRAND new here, but i played D&D a very little in 3.0, where it said something about having as many animal companions as 2d6 of damage would allow or something (probably wrong but not the point), heres my question...

in 3.5 how do u determine the max # of animal helpers a druid can have with him?

(i know they may not be "companions", but whats to say i cant 'charm animal' and then use wild empathy to become freinds and have tons of wolves with me everywhere i go)

well ijn 3.5 druids are allowed only one animal companion to share spells, telepathic links ect. ect. but the druid can also charm anomal and use those as friends. With the wolves they would have to get along with each other and that is not something you control. plus it might be a little unbalancing for you to have a lot of wolve so i doubt any good dm would allow it. If the animal is smart enough to know that it was charmed do you rally think that it would be friends with some one who pretty much forced them into it? i wouldnt but it is a good thought.. perhaps you can talk your dm into it.....I like druids and have been down this same path before...

I think whether or not a post-charmed animal would stay with the player depends a lot on what was done with the charm.

A long while back I had a cleric who had Charm Animal on his class spell list as a houserule, and the one and only time he used it resulted in a permanent ally. See the party ran afoul of a pack of starved, sick-looking wolves, and the cleric gave them food and distance rather than letting the party kill them. Additionally he charmed the runt of the pack and gave him some extra food, cleaned him up and tended his wounds. Didn't ask anything of the wolf, just used the spell to keep it from being hostile long enough to demonstrate his intentions. When the spell wore off, the wolf was skittish for a little while, but gave the cleric the benefit of the doubt, and they bonded and ended up adventuring together for a long time. I think the key was not trying to force the wolf to do anything with the charm.

Technically you can only have One animal companion however that wouldn’t stop you from training or owning pets. A well trained war dog for example, would follow your verbal commands, fight by your side, and generally be there for you. However it wouldn’t be as smart as your wolf companion, nor would it be able to benefit from things like spell sharing or empathic link.

There is, however, a PrC that allows for multiple animal companions.

I just can't remember the name of it.

Anyone can get a/another animal companion using the Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) feat. But it does progress much slower than a druid's regular companion. (but still faster than a ranger's)

That sounds right.

I was thinking the Animal Lord one, but in my head, my brain kept saying "No, thats the guy who lives with monkeys."
