I have an Elf Druid. I was wondering if he could use a longsword. Under the weapon and armor proficiency section, it says "If a Druid wears prohibited armor or uses a prohibited shield, they lose all spells and abilities for 24 hours" or something to that effect. Although it doesn't say anything about weapons. Do Druid's have prohibited weapons at all?

Then why doesn't it say anything about weapons. Also, why can I use a scimitar? That's made of metal.

Earlier on in the Druid description, under "characteristics", it says something about druids being restricted to the weapons and are listed under 'Weapon and Armor Proficiencies". It says that they 'avoid carrying much worked metal', so a longsword is probably out.

That was the old druid. 3.5 druids have no weapon restrictions.

That still doesn't explain Scimitars.

actually that's incorrect, a druid cannot use metal armor or shields, however a druid may use any weapon s/he wants, the only thing stopping him/her is his/her proficiencies

The no metal rule was in OD&D, they were limited to wooden, blunt weapons. (Staves, clubs, etc.)

In 3.0, you were limited to your starting proficiencies, and that was it, you couldn't use anything else.

In 3.5, you are not limited on weapons, you simply use whatever you can (Although you still start with weapon proficiencies, and aren't proficient in anything else.)

considering that after 5th level, a druid in a fight will most likely either wildshape, or cast spikes and shillelagh (except spelled correctly) on a quarterstaff and use two weapon fighting, anything else is more or less moot.

3.5 allows the use of any weapon, an elf is proficient with a longsword, therefor yes the druid may use a longsword. You just can't wear any metallic armor... This does include studded leather.

My current Druid is wearing enchanted Black Dragonhid Breastplate. No metal, and a major bonus to armor class.
