| frostyusa01-03-06, 07:37 AM | So my wife is thinking about adding a level of Cleric to her 5th level Druid. Trying to run through the Pros and Cons. She is playing in FR as a Druid who worships Silvanus and his Clerics often multiclass as Druids or Rangers, so the RP aspect is cool. How much is she really gaining in versatility? The party is without a cleric, but with potions, her druid and the Paladin, they have been doing okay. Domain options were leaning toward Protection and Renewal. Can the Cleric take the deities favored weapon (Great Mallet, a maul) as weapon without martial proficiency? |
| CzarGarrett01-03-06, 10:07 AM | Personally, I'd stick with straight Druid. The druid class is strong enough to not need a power boost, especially from a class so very similiar to it. And she'd need several levels of Cleric to get some of the better healing spells. Its probably better to just get a wand or two for healing. However, if for RP reasons she does plan on multiclassing, I'd probably go for Ranger over Cleric. Thematically, it seems a little better. Also, the Ranger gives extra skill points and increases the BAB, which can be quite useful. Besides, Druids are like ultra-specialized Clerics to begin with. Maybe its my 2E learnings, but Druids and Clerics shouldn't be able to multiclass into one another. |
| frostyusa01-03-06, 10:33 AM | If it were not for the fact that she already chose Silvanus as her patron diety, I would agree that it would not make alot of sense, to multi class. But to me its an elegent transition, especially the added domain abilities. The heal spells are not her highest priority its just a bonus. The wider range of spells, especially on the protection side is what intrigues her character. |
| cambric01-03-06, 10:40 AM | If it intrigues her, do it! Let her enjoy the game. I'm with CzarGarrett, pure druid is powerful enough...but that being said, I love the role playing part of it. So what, let her do cleric and enjoy the flavor. I have a cleric in the group I dm who took the War and Strength domains, then took 2 levels of fighter around 7th level...took the riding feats and through a lot of role playing and making some deals, got a pegasus. He rides in for the attacks and just loves his character. Now, is it more powerful than going pure cleric? Nope! But he so enjoys the PC, I'm very happy for him. I say, "let her enjoy it, take what levels she wants, and have a blast playing her character." Cam |
| DrMorganes01-03-06, 11:56 AM | *gasp* You mean you actually have a player who is more interested in roleplaying her character than making choices based on the power curve? And on top of that she's your wife?! Have you any idea what a lucky, lucky man you are? ;) Seriously, though, I'm with Cambric on this one. Let her multiclass as a cleric if she wishes. It should make for an interesting character. Perhaps even check Complete Divine to see if there are any druid/cleric prestige classes which trip her trigger... |
| tsuyoshikentsu01-03-06, 01:58 PM | No. There aren't. Statistically, there are no reasons to do this. At all. Trust me, I'm a CharOp regular. RPwise, go for it. |
| Elemental_Elf01-03-06, 03:26 PM | Go for it! :D |
| Sybill01-04-06, 10:36 AM | I agree that sometimes taking weird secondary classes can turn out ok. My character is a cleric 5 of the Traveler (eberron) and rogue 1. Now I can turn myself invisible, sneak up on you with a +13 move silently check (and yes, I apply armor check penalties), and sneak attack you with a finessed light mace, all while wearing full plate. Did I mention my boots of spider climb? So anyway, even some classes that don't seem to really help out each other can turn out to work really well! On a mechanics note, only clerics with the war domain gain proficiency with their deity's favored weapon. Otherwise, you have to take the feat. |
| antiok01-04-06, 11:54 AM | Is it really worth multiclassing at all |
| OnTheVerge01-04-06, 12:39 PM | If she's considering it for roleplaying reasons, she should do it. She knows her character's motivations and goals better than anyone. If she's considering it for game mechanics reasons, it's probably not the best idea. |
| CaoSlayer01-04-06, 06:21 PM | umm, without a doub, a level of cleric it is always useful cause domains. ummm, also getting turn undead allows her to use divine metamagic with her druid spells. |
| frostyusa01-05-06, 01:38 PM | Okay she has decided to do it. My next question is what feat should she take? She has Combat Casting and Augment Summoning now. She is taking Renewal (out of FRCS) and Protection for Domains. Is there a feat that would duplicate some of the effects of the Healing Domain? |
| Sosthenes01-05-06, 03:55 PM | Augment Healing - +2 to every Conjuration[Healing] spell Sacred Healing - turn attempt -> fast healing 3 for everyone (1+Cha rounds) Sacred Boost - turn attempt -> until the end of your next turn, every cure spell is maximized... Spontaneous Haler - Wis mod. times/day, sponanteously convert a spell to an equivalent Cure spell |
| frostyusa01-05-06, 09:05 PM | Are all these in Complete Divine? Point me in the right direction for full listing please. |
| Magare01-06-06, 04:45 PM | Lets not forget she's a 5th level druid and a 6th level character. Natural spell? |
| Votan01-06-06, 05:18 PM | Lets not forget she's a 5th level druid and a 6th level character. Natural spell? Kinda seems obvious, doesn't it . . . And bear is a nifty 5 HD form. |
