Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Kit [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-01-06, 10:13 AM I was a DnD minis player for a while, and I'm thinking of getting into the RPG, is the Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Kit a good purchase. I missed the Basic Game and can't find it anywhere. So is it a good way to start, can I start playing a full game as soon as I get it and read the rules?

07-01-06, 10:33 AM D&D is both like and unlike the minis game.

It's like the minis game in that they both use a similar engine for resolving combat. "Real" D&D gives a wider variety of options and is a little more complex, but the basic concepts are pretty similar.

It's completely unlike the minis game in that the minis game is a wargame (about combat) while D&D is a role-playing game (about co-operative storytelling with rules, of which combat is one part). Rather than playing a team, each player plays a single character. Rather than just fighting a set-piece battle, the group of "player characters" goes on adventures, which might be dungeon delving, rescuing a princess, solving a murder, or exposing a dangerous plot to bring down a kingdom. Combat may well be part of this, but the focus is more on the "why" of the conflict, rathern than just who can get the most victory points.

The other notable difference is that one player is the "Dungeon Master", who sets out the scenario and runs "the world" for the PCs to adventure in. The players don't compete with the dungeon master, but a good DM will set adventures up that challenge the players.

From what I've read of it, the Players Kit would be a good starting point. The other good starting point is a group of people to play with. Check out either the 'classifieds' on this site or the people you play minis with to see if there is a group going that you can join. Otherwise, start your own. If you start your own, you will need the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. If you join an existing group, they presumably have at least one set already.

07-01-06, 03:04 PM you can order the basic game from knoble knight games .com. but you will end up getting the three core books any way. i saw the basic game at walden books the other day so wizards may have started shipping them again.

07-01-06, 03:22 PM Aren't they soon to have a revised Basic Game (it has Regdar and a blue dragon on the cover)? I'd nab that one just for the cheap extra minis and dice set. :)

07-01-06, 04:00 PM i think so thats why it shocked me to see the basic game on a store shelf just a few days ago. it was the 2004 edt. with the black dragon. earlier this year you couldnt get it any where. looks like they would just sell the minis that come with the basic game in a seperate set for us that already been playing and dont need the newb stuff.

07-02-06, 11:56 AM im not sure this fall maybe.getting in to d&d is abit over whelming to newbs the dice and minis were the only things worth having in the basic game. you could just get the players kit. if your not playing with an already established group youll need the dm guide 3.5 , mm 3.5 and 3.5 players guide which is the most important book to have.you can order all three in a set which is much cheaper if you do this you will need to get a few sets of dice .so you can hook up with your friends and start a new group. plus a campaign setting helps like fr it makes the job for a new dm easy. that is a lot of money to invest.but i know you can get the basic game from knoble knight games .com its the 2004 version but the new basic game coming out wont be much diffent. like i said i know this is overwhelming if you have any more questions just ask! good luck!!

07-03-06, 08:23 AM If they haven't re released it yet then I saw one of the older versions of the kit this weekend. I must say that the dice set in it was MUCH MUCH MUCH better looking than the first 3.0 kit. I won that at a raffle, and being as I had all of the 3.0 books I needed at the time I figured "hey, I've got another set of dice." oh man were those ever horrid looking dice. Like something you've gather out of mutipule kiddy board games and what have you. I couldn't even give those dice away they were so awful looking.
