Duskblade needs help getting to Dragon Disciple [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-23-07, 11:23 PM I am playing a 5th level duskblade in a homebrew campaign. I've built him up from 2nd level with the intention of making him into a dragon disciple and now I have everything ready mechanically, but I need help tying the character to the class.

A brief backstory: His family was killed by a drow raiding party and that sparked his adventuring. Currently he is with a group sailing to an island to recover a piece of a magic item. He has a deep hatred of the drow and eventually wants to devote his life to killing them (once he can find them in the campaign world). Dragon disciple seemed like a good class to do that with and just fun to play. He is fairly combat heavy right now focusing on melee. I was thinking about maybe connecting the drow to dragons somehow, but that doesn't make much sense. He worships Wee Jas and is LN. He studies as much as he can when he isn't killing baddies. I would really appreciate any ideas connecting this with my character concept (if all you have to say is "that won't work" please restrain yourself)

btw my DM considers RP very critical in the taking of a PrC thx!:)

10-23-07, 11:35 PM Ask your DM if you can meet a dragon who hates drow and from his awe-inspiring devastation of them you seek to become just like a dragon (i.e. DD)

You said you were en-route to retrieve a piece of an artifact. Do you know what this artifact is? Or what it does?
Maybe you could talk to your DM & see if you becoming a DD could be triggered by it. You know, you pick it up and it starts affecting you in strange ways. Or it's cursed. Or you have to defeat a dragon in order to claim it - but shortly after doing so you discover your begining to assume the form of the items guardian itself.... Something like that.

Planning to enter a PrC mechanicaly, your anti-drow backstory, and actually entering the PrC need not have anything to do with one another.
That you'll be able to kill drow even more effectively will simply be an added bonus.

10-24-07, 09:51 AM In my opinion, having a single rank in Knowledge (Arcana) would be enough for a character to have read some ancient text making a passing reference of power to be gained by following "the Path of the Dragon". By the time you reach 8 ranks in K(A), you've managed discover that this is indeed true and exactly how to go about it. Of course, you had to learn to speak Draconic do to it, but most arcane casters know this already.

From there, I would describe the ritual you will perform to bind your soul to draconic power. Perhaps you need to find a draconic patron willing to offer up something of itself as a material component for the ritual. If you choose to align with a Good dragon, this would obviously be a voluntary offering to you. For evil dragons, it makes sense that you would need to take that component by force - perhaps even subsuming the dragon's spirit into your own (which could lead to some very interesting roleplaying opportunities). You could simply purchase the necessary materials from a large city, but I think that removes a good portion of the inherent mysticism from the process. Of course, the ritual could merely require you to perform it in an area appropriate to the type of dragon you wish to follow - the better to tap into the elemental nature of dragons - and complete the ritual without the benefit of magic protecting you from the environment. It's up to you, but I encourage you to be creative.

CCS's idea is also a good option, though it implies a certain amount of unwillingness and a lot more DM intervention. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it seems to me that your DM is looking to YOU to provide a reasonable explanation for how your character has managed to acquire this new power.

10-24-07, 01:52 PM What is the "source" behind your ability to cast spells? Perhaps you had a dragon relative somewhere in your past and only now is this blood coming to light as your Knowledge has enabled you to harness that into a transformation.
