Alright, I'm coming into an online campaign to take over the character another person was playing. He is a dwarf fighter4/paladin2 with a rather traditional outlook on dwarves. So I have been wracking my brain trying to think of a suitable mount for such a dwarf.

Right now I'm looking for low-HD animals or magical beasts that would be suitable for a dwarf paladin. I'll worry about how to get one after I figure out what to look for. I would prefer something that could actually travel with me into all the nasty places a dwarf paladin would find himself, especially underground.

So far the only thing I came up with was the Deep Hound from Races of Stone. Any other ideas?

Well first of all, since you're a Dwarf, you're a mdeium-sized creature, and I'm pretty sure the mount must be at least one size-category larger than the rider. So you could only use large-sized creatures or bigger. I'm not sure, but I think it said so in DMG (couldn't find it from SRD).

Now I'm not sure what large-sized creatures could work in an underground environment. Some sort of lizard if there's big enough to work as a mount. Or you could choose a smaller mount if you don't want to ride it. Then a monitor lizard for example could work.

Just remember to check DMG for more info about aquiring more powerful mount to see at which level you can get it. You're currently only 2nd level Paladin, so you must get 3 levels to get any mount at all, so I guess there's no hurry with the suggestions here.

I struggled with this one myself. Eventually, I decided simply not to use a mount since we were practically living in dungeons anyway. I'd think that a Celestial Dire Bear is a suitable mount. You have to wait until level 10 or so for one, of course. A Celestial Dire Badger is also a neat idea. Not really usable as a mount, but darned handy at helping you or fellow dwarves out in a cave-in.

WOW player, are ye? I thought about a mountain sheep of some sort. Maybe check Frostburn and see what it has.

No, I'm not in a real hurry, I was just thinking about it so I posted. The underground lizards are freaking awesome (I see them like Obi-wan's mount in Episode 3) but they don't seem like something a dwarf would ride.

Can you get a "mount" that you do not actually ride, and treat it as basically an animal companion? If so I love the idea, as I usually play rangers. An intelligent animal companion would be a nice change. I don't remember how they phrase the ability in the PHB, but if you can the celestial dire badger is a great idea.

Thanks for the replies, and please keep the ideas coming.

Celestial Dire Bear isn't allowed. It goes beyond the power Paladins can call as their mounts. Dungeon Master Guide has the list of mounts you can get, or more like the list of how powerful mount you can get and Celestial Dire Bear would go beyond the "best" mount (Dire Lion). Of course if the DM allows such powerful mounts it's of course fine.

As I said in my previous post, you can have a mount which you can't ride (like too small mount), and there's nothing to prevent getting a mount which you could ride but you don't want to. But there's still limitations of which mount you can get, and again it's all in DMG.

And Celsetial Dire Badger should be well in the limits of Paladin's Mount (I mean how powerful it is, as it isn't that powerful).

Mule, plain and simple.

Oops, if the CR is too high on the Celestial Dire Bear, a plain ol' Celestial Bear may work. It's the idea of a bear sent by Moradin, not the "dire" part of it, that has the cool factor for me. :)
