My wife is joining a new campaign, and I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions.

The current group is a rogue, barbarian, druid, and sorcerer. Starting at 3rd level.

So it looks like we're missing a healer, but my wife has previously tried cleric, and the expectations were just too much for her.

She is currently playing a fighter in a different campaign, but this group is already somewhat combat oriented.

I was thinking maybe bard. Bard can be difficult, because most of the power of the bard is disguise, infiltration, fascinate, and suggestion (which can be difficult), but on the other hand they only have a limited amount of spells to know (a positive for her), they can tie up the first round doing inspire courage while they think of something else to do, plus they can cure if needed.

Any thoughts?

IMO, Barbarian is the easiest class to learn. You are not overwhemed with skills, feats, spells or complicated special abilities. Rage is the only thing to learn (and that's more when to rage and when to save the ability for later). Uncanny dodge is passive...so not something she'd need to think about. Barbarians also tend to be robust and easy to keep alive even when the player makes tactical errors, almso making them more att5ractive for new players.

At low levels fighter isn't too too complicated but she will need to keep track of a few feats, so you might have to advise her on what to use when. Fighters also scale well, becoming slightly more complex over time as their build up more feats...so as her character advances, she will get to oversee an increasingly complex set of options.

Bard may not be a bad choice either. At 3rd level there are not all that many songs to keep track of (and really Inspire courage is the one she'll use most often). It also gives her access to a very limited repertoire of spells (3 1st level spells) one of which could be Cure Light Wounds. Unfortunately there will also be a lot of skills to keep track of, which might make it confusing.

If I were you though I guess I'd steer her to Paladin (if she can RP the alignment). Good hits points, no spells (at 3rd level), several passive abilities, but only a few simply "active" abilities (Detect Evil, Smite Evil and Lay on Hands), some minor healing through Lay on Hands, and she'll pick up cleric spells at later levels. It's also not overburdened witha great number of skill points (as there are a lot of skills making them a pain for a newbie to learn from scratch). It's a highly "survivable" class for new players, it adds substantially to party combat ability at low levels...if it weren't for the religious/alignment requirements I'd say it would be ideal for new players.

well I have found that the sorcerer is a farly easy class to learn at early lvls, only a few spells to learn, and when i say spells i meen the simple ones magic missil, scorching ray, knock and the like. be sure to make a few flash cards for the spells, too.

She decided on a halfling ranger archery route. Thanks for the advice everyone. It should be easy enough, most things are already calculated, and if she goes into halfling outrider prestige class she wont have to worry much about spells.
