Phaylan the Drow 10-05-05, 06:39 AM	how do you work out ecl - feats - xp level ie; +2 race + 4 class levels = a char with how many feats and calculated xp level? does that equal a 6 lvl char with all of its related feats or that of a 4th lvl char due to its class lvls please enlighten politley as i am feeling very ill. :(
babysamurai 10-05-05, 06:51 AM	You gain Feats based on Hit Die. The only thing ECL effects is XP needed to gain levels, and expected wealth.
Merestil Haye 10-05-05, 07:09 AM	ECL is the sum of the creature's Racial Hit Dice, all class levels and Racial Adjustment. It affects XP awards, XP requirements to gain levels and expected wealth. Everything else to do with the character (Max skill ranks, BAB, base save bonuses and number of feats, excluding bonus feats from race or class) is calculated using the creature's Character Level, which is the the sum of the monster's racial Hit Dice and all class levels. So a creature with 4 racial HD, a +2 Level Adjustment and three levels of Cleric would be a 7th level character for purposes of feats, would have a max rank of 10 for class skills and 5 for cross-class skills. You would calculate the BAB and save bonuses using the information for a 4HD creature of the appropriate creature type in the Monster Manual, plus the bonuses a 3rd level cleric gets. When calculating his cleric abilities, treat him as a 3rd level cleric (unless his racial abilities explicitly say they boost Cleric class levels).

If you mean "A 3rd level character of a race with +2 LA" then that is right only if all the characters HD come from class levels. For example, a 3rd level Elven half-fey wizard (the template gives a +2 LA) would fit that. Such a character would have 2 feats plus the bonus Scribe Scroll feat granted by his Wizard levels. However, if you were playing a Satyr Wizard 3, you would have an ECL of 10 (3 for Wizard, +2 LA, +5 for the Satyr's racial HD). Such a character would have 3 feats (for his 8 HD) plus the bonus Scribe Scroll feat granted by Wizard levels. Hope that helps.
Nom 10-05-05, 08:21 AM	The key concept is that LA are "handicap levels". In and of themselves they give you zero benefit, but instead handicap you with respect to the XP tables. Of course, this handicap is supposed to balance out your special abilities.

babysamurai 10-05-05, 08:47 AM	LA only effects how much XP you need to gain a level, and expected character wealth. Everything else about your character (feats, skills, BAB etc) is based off of your HD (be they just class HD or racial HD, or a both).
