I have a Leadership score of 13, which means my cohort can be ECL 9. I want my cohort to be a Yurian (from the Fiend Folio.) Yurians have a +4 Level Adjustment. Does this mean my Yurian can only be fifth level?

Yes, that is correct.

Note that FF's use of LA includes racial hit dice. Very confusing given that LA is now used differently.

*** Edit: I forgot that FF uses a different definition of LA ***

That sucks. Poor Yurians are barely tougher than a Gnoll. I have a feeling a 9th level human fighter would kill him quite easily. O_O

I see, thanks. Though it still doesn't seem like he'd be as tough as a PC race of equivalent level.... probably not the smartest choice from a pure mechanics perspective.

It's my Geomancer's goal to become the fishy lord of all Yurians though. He wouldn't be much of one with no actual Yurian followers. >_>

Followers? Have em coming out your gills (sorry).

Cohort? Right hand man? Grand vizier?
You want a good solid compliment to your role - tank for caster and visa versa.
(or Artificer, if its allowed :)

edit:typo on role :(

Yeah, I decided to make him a Barbarian 5. He's got more HP than most of the rest of the party, so even at a level lower than the average PC he'll be valuable on the front lines.
