| Lord_HaVoC10-10-06, 10:10 PM | i have read a bunch of posts in the different forums about this. im appologize in advance for opening it up again. however, i have not yet seen a very simple illustration for dummies on how ECL works when leveling up. for instance. my character is a level 2 Half-orc barbarian. his current xp is 1800 for instance. all the sudden he is a half-fiend/half-orc barbarian. ECL=6 how much experience does he have to get in order to become a level 3? 3000 or 21000? i understand that as a ECL6 when my party of level 2/1's kill a ettin level5 that they will all get massive exp while i will get alot less since he was actually weaker then me. but thats why im confused. if that be the case then i should only have to goto 3000 for level 3. if i got the same amount of xp as the rest of the group then 21000 would make sense. then again what about the fact that i have 16 HP? i have to go 19000 exp before i get another HP? all my team members will have 7 HD so anywhere from 28 to 84 HP and i will have 17 to 28. these figures did not take into account any con modifiers. trying to keep it simple. :) anyone that can set me straight please do. im totally confused after 4 hours in the forums. :( a nice table would be cool. :) |

When you build a character with a level adjustment, the XP he has reflects his ECL, not his level. For example, a 1st level half-orc half-fiend barbarian would be ECL 5, and start with 10,000 XP, as if he were a 5th level character. At 15,000 XP (necessary for reaching 6th level), he would advance to level 2, ECL 6. Your sudden jump in ECL has retarded your advancement significantly - you actually have an XP debt at this point, as you gained the ECL without the XP, and are behind. You've got a long way to go before you ever level up again. It would not, however, be unreasonable for your DM to reset your XP to the minimum amount needed for your current ECL (15,000) to avoid you taking such a ridiculously long time to level up (21,000 XP, to ECL 7). Ask him if he'll do that. The nice table you want exists, it's on page 22 of the PHB. You use ECL in place of Character Level to determine levelup thresholds. |
