Do any base casting class stack for th ecl.

Wizard 5/ Full casting PrC 10/ Archmage 5: Total CL is 20 (baring outside effects)

Wizard 5/Fighter 7/Eldritch Knight 4/ Dragon Disciple 4: Total CL is 8 from the Wizard and the EK levels.

In general, if the class advances the spellcasting capabilities of one of your base classes, then you add however many times the +1 of X shows up to that class' Caster Level.

But if you have Racial HD or a Level Adjustment, those do not count (baring special exceptions like the Mind Flayer).

Another example:

Wizard 10/Sorcerer 10: Caster level for Wizard: 10th. Same for the Sorcerer. In this instance, nothing is added to either side. They are separate classes with separate progressions.

02-19-08, 02:34 AM OK, if your base class is, say, wizard, then you can only add casting levels from levels in wizard or levels that say "+1 to existing arcane casting class". If you have levels in sorcerer, cleric, druid etc. these do not count.

The sole exception to this is from the feat "Practiced Caster". This does not add levels in terms of spells you can cast, but it does increase the effective casting level of your spells. If your hit dice exceed your casting level you can add up to four of them to your casting level - so if you are a fighter 3/wizard 5 with the feat Practiced Caster you have the spells of a 5th-level wizard but cast as an 8th level wizard. However, non-hit-dice levels do NOT count, so a drow fighter 3 / wizard 5 might have an ECL of 10, but with Practiced Caster can only have an effective caster level of 8.

Practiced Caster must be taken once for each casting class it effects, so if you are a wizard 3/cleric 3/mystic theurge 7 you can take it twice to have the spells of a 10th level cleric and a 10th level wizard, but cast them both as a 13th level caster.
