If you are the evil ones, then burn down the forest.

DMs hate that solution though :P

ask nearby tribes like dwarves, halflings, or maybe even get the elves enemies on your side

yeah, clear out the surrounding settlements as well as you can using your undead forces, then begin a slow slash-and-burn campaign into the forest, falling back once the elves start to make a concentrated response. You are going to want to force them into an open conflict, where your army will be on an equal footing with the elves. Fight them in the forest, and the elves have the advantage, something you won't want to have happen.

Well, starting multiple smaller fires would work to split the Elf forces as many of them try to put out the fires.

One person can start a fire, but it might take a hundred to put it out.

Ask the drow to help. Drow hate elves, your fighting elves. So drow could help... maybe... if they felt like it. Just don't pay them until after you've won... and don't let them out of your sight... unless your DM doesn't know how to properly run drow... in which case... do what you would with an evil NPC.

good thing about your army is that the more you kill the stronger you become so definitely either destroy or ally any nearby settlements. don't forget to burn the forest, and above all let the elves come to you never under any circumstances try and fight he on their ground. Consider reading the book Sun Tsu's art of war. Remember your not just gonna kill those elf Bastards your gonna use their fluids to grease your armor. Your gonna go through 'em like **** through goose. Now i know that you may be afraid that you'll chicken out during battle. Don't worry because if you feel a pile of goo that use to be your best friends face then you'll know what to do. (please tell you know what that's from)

how will i start a lard fire in a green forest ????

08-27-07, 08:20 PM
You need two things. The first is a Blighter - Deforestation means you can just walk through the forest and destroy it that way. Make sure you don't actually play one though, they really suck for anything but that. The second thing you need is a spell checker. Spelling and punctuation are not your enemies!

How to set fire to a forest? Use fire, I guess.

The only problem with starting a forest fire is how long it takes the wood to catch. If it has been dry a simple prestidigitations spell or tindertwig will do the job. IF not set fire to oil or alchahol that you chuck into the forest. Anyway, the stuff closer to the ground will catch first until it finds ladder fuel to get to the crowns of the trees. From there the fire is much harder to put out and will cause more serios damage.

(also for starting the fire it might also be a goot idea to use flame pots launched from catapults to start fires further inward.)

The problem with a forest fire is starting it. Once it's up, it'll keep going. The above post has some good ideas. Use catapults to throw alchemists fire. You will want to surround the entire forest as quietly as you can, maybe stay 10 miles out, then have as many catapults and fire teams as possible rush the forest and start as many fires as possible. The more you get up the harder it will be to put out, plus if you surprise them, the fires have a chance to grow, if they are expecting you, they can get them early. You could also have some guys flying above the forest drenching it in oil (around the already set fires) and dropping alchemists fire in. Once you run out, maybe some tinder, then when you run out of that, stones, on the elves. (stupid elves)

personally, im one for more cloak and dagger tactics.
send evil clerics in disguise into elven towns. when people die, iether from the war or naturaly, have them perform the burial (which is actually animate dead), and bury them. when the war gets around to that town, you now have forces inside.
assassinate leaders, generals, colonels, heck even messengers, breaks up the chain of command and weakens them all.
shadows and wraiths can move through the ground, and create spawn, have them come up through castle floors, inside safe houses for the civilians, or up from below on the battlefield. you may end up with a few rogue wraiths after a fight, but you can rebuke them later.

oh, one very important thing to remember is that your army does not tire, even if you do. find a way to keep moving while you sleep, and attack at night. zombie armies are fast when they don't stop moving

Likely with a tindertwig and some lard... Odds are you'd need a wick of some sort, however. Lard doesn't burn all that well; it's just congealed oil, after all.

If, however, you're looking to start a large fire in a green forest, you just have to start small. The sap of pine trees is highly flammable (as any Cub Scout will happily tell you). Green pine is actually one of the very best options you have for starting a fire. It catches fire quickly and burns hot. Really all you'll need are some tindertwigs, a fistful of old pinecones, a rank or two of Survival, and a standard action. Just make sure you have someone making Spot Checks for a werebear wearing a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a spade...

If you're just looking for general havoc, send a bunch of mooks into the forest and have them randomly toss flasks of Alchemists' Fire.

check my sig for my hero that way you will destroy not only the elves but their gods too

(completely not related to the first paragraph) You might want to use cloak and dagger and favour a weak minded but charismatic young leader among the elves that way you could either:

a) send the elves to civil war
b) control the leader

I find the problems with cloak and dagger is it is really hard to pull off. The cleric idea needs some more details added. How do the clerics get in? I mean disguising spells are ok but you need more for accents and personalities, they'd be found out rather quickly. Lets say 2 years (although a couple of months is more accurate), how many people die in 2 years in a community, especially an elven community. You also can't have a ton of spies, there just isn't that many of them. The amount you will get might be enough to make an ok army, but they'd have to be put together.

You would like to increase your odds of winning? Have the enemy come to you. The hardest part of a seige is gaining equal footing, and if you can get that, you have a chance. Maybe start a long war by going into their forest and chopping down trees to construct forts, after that begin to build funnel points to route and divide the enemy. If they attack while construction is going on, use fire on the dead wood for morale effects (this is often worth nothing though, since most DM's have never heard of the word, demoralise).

Other options could include; traps (falling trees, logs, etc...), cover of darkness (this unfortunately works both ways though), and poison (you said that you did have undead with you; a dead body in a water source is worth ten of the enemy).

You people are overthinking this, it's a forest of elves, you know, the race consisting of nothing but whiny, spoiled wimps? (And then there are the females) Just march in there and kill everything, resistance should be minimum.(I mean come on, what are they going to do? Poke you with a sharp stick?)

No they will transmutate you and your army into a porcupine... I mean they will fill your body with Arrows from your surroundings... they will use their knowledge about their terrain against you and your army and lead you to traps... then they will divide your army using guerrilla tactics... you know... because they kinda KNOW their homes... so just marching wont work.

Take on consideration that the previous paragraph doesn't take on acount spellcaster (be them divine and/or arcane)

You want to defeat them... use your mind... or use such a large force of undead minions that losing a few thousands wont be a disadvantage (you know... because of morale... leaders that don't like their breathing troops being sacrificed etc...)

You miss the point, elves in a battle are like a cow on iceskates. They might flail about wildly, but it will ultimately be in vain and they will fall on their behinds. All it takes is a slight nudge.

Depends on if you play a campaign with whimp-elves or badass-elves. Yes, Elves in the field are not really a threat, but elves in their own forest, that's a completely different thing.

Even with standard-elves, it won't be easy to get them.
First thing is, that they hide and attack from ambush.
Second thing is, that their settlements are likely small, few and hidden and that in an imense forest.

Even if you manage to burn down the whole forest, they can still evade you and you may defeat them, but not kill them. The important question here is, why the elves have to be killed. If you just want them dead, it will be really hard. If you want them to be no longer a threat to you, there are a number of options depending on why they are a problem.

All in all, hunting them is useless. The best options are likely to draw them out or to trap them inside.

No my friend... I see your point... and I see it quite clearly... you don't see them as a threat... And that is OK if it works for you... really... but if I were a warlord or a general... well I wouldn't underestimate my enemys when they are fighting to protect their homes... because they know were they are fighting... no... I'll try to fight under my rules... fighting elves? I'll force them out of their covers (forests)... Dwarfs? avoid closing quarters with them... and surely not going into their underground cities... if your enemy is were he lives... he knows its traps

i.e.

Napoleon invading Russia... what did the russian army did? took away the civilians from ther towns and burned them [the town... not the civilians] (even burning St.petesburg in the end) and let the winter decimate the already weakened invading force (for the lack of food and water)

If the elves know they are going to be invaded... you can believe me... they will use every single pice of knowledge they have about their own forest to destroy the invading force (at a really low cost of soldiers)

Did you by any chance participate in the Elves&Greatswords thread?

Otherwise, burning down the forest is pretty much your best chance.

CONSTANT VIGILANCE! The elves are going to be sneaky devils. Have guards, double them. Have guards guarding the guards. Every night in your new location dig a trench, build a palisade and cut the brush back at least 50 feet. Every night keep your perimeter well lighted. Guard your supplies, guard your generals, and guard your everything.

When you meet the enemy in a traditional fight you will beat them. There will be maybe two of these fights in the entire campaign. Most of the fights will go like this. A patrol gets sent out. Their point man falls in a spike trap. Their next casualties are lightning bolted to death. The leader gets an arrow through his heart. No, twelve of them. The patrol gets back from patrol. They didn't see any enemies but they are half dead. Think Vietnam, the elves are the VC. Except better.

How can you beat them? Well, strike where you know the enemy will be. Take all the food. Total destruction of their world.

12 sorcerers fire balling the forest at all times.
12 wizards/clerics and a black dragon cursing the water that flows into the forest.
raiding parties of goblins with alchemist fire, who have a spell cast on them from PHB2 where they explode when they die.
recruit recruit recruit. (or kill and raise)
Have Vampire LTs.
Spawn of KXXX warriors (mm2 or 3)
Globes of Invulnerability.
BURN the forest down.

get creative. build a wall around the forest using the forest's wood, and fight with your armies for years and years. house them in various fortresses built evenly around the forest behind your walls.

Remember, this is a forest the size of Texas. It's going to be hard to siege them all. Your best bet is to scatter them to the winds and destroy anything larger than 10 elves together.

One thing i'd do is make sure you have plenty more necromancers (such as evil clerics)/scrolls of control undead on hand. Thats one of the advantages of an undead army - an enemy's corpse is your friend.

Deforestation is always good, but i wouldnt go the blighter route - while it does reduce the amount of trees the elves can hide behind, you'd really want the deforestation to actually damage the elves.

Some more methods and tactics for use while setting fires:
Mix up randomly aimed fires and strategically aimed fires - for the second options, i would go for some low level intelligent flunkies (i.e. not mindless undead) with oil and alchemist's fire. Start these near settlements you've located, but don't set them first - set the random fires first, as then the elves will have less resources to deal with your aimed fires.

One way of setting your random fires would be oil and alchemist's fire clusterbombs fired from catapults (i.e. 20 gallons of oil, 1 flask of alchemists fire in the middle)

Another way of helping your fires out, if you have access to it, is Control Weather. Hot weather, with winds blowing hard into the forest would really help spread the fire.

Next up, just some tactics:
if you can, make some surgical strikes with your own characters - in the real world, it wouldnt be a smart offensive tactic if george bush parahcuted himself into insurgent territory. However, in the real world, george bush isn't massively stronger than the standard US Army. Just do it once a day with your characters, so you can utterly blitz on spells and resources, inflict as much damage as you can to an important location (i.e. the elven capital) then teleport back out. Bring that lich along if you can - if he keeps his phylactery back at your main fort, then he's got the least risk out of all of your elite attack team.

The last thing i can think of right now is to build forts - the elves live in a big flammable area the size of texas. If you're a constant risk of burning it down, they're going to have to send armies to attack you. Make sure you have a couple of really well defended forts, and try not to stop your firestarting process when they send armies out, as this could prevent them from sending as many people to fight you, when so many are needing to stop their collosal forest from baking them.
