| Erus11-04-04, 08:23 AM | Ok, as I know, 100 minds are better than 1, so here's my question. I have a level 15 fighter type with a horrid will save. I don't necissarily need the will save to be cranked, but I would like him immune (or almost) to mind influencing spells etc. What magic item or combo would fill this void. Best bang for the buck if you will. ?? (char is Barb 1/Rang 9/Invis Blade 5) |
| ck2001wendt11-04-04, 08:40 AM | Well, a level of Dragonslayer will make you immune to fear (including magical fear). And give you +1 to your Ranger CL. Other than that, I would recommend some sort of item that makes you immune to Compulsions/Enchantments. Nothing comes to mind. |
| Erus11-04-04, 08:51 AM | Nothing comes to mind. Exactly where I'm at right now. oh, the character is a halfling too, so fear is at least at +2 already. I do like the Dragonslayer Idea, he just maxed out invible blade and was going to go on to something, I may look into that. |
| Naeron11-04-04, 09:40 AM | 2 Options: A protection for Evil\Good item is a good start, especially if you can get a reduced price to allow only the second effect so that you don't have to pay the cost of the deflection and resistance bonuses and also that the DM doesn't have to try and work out the value of protectoin from contact by summoned creatures. It doesn't stop the spell working but stops the control form working. SRD - "Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature (by a magic jar attack, for example) or to exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment (charm) effects and enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject, such as dominate person). The protection does not prevent such effects from targeting the protected creature, but it suppresses the effect for the duration of the protection from evil effect." A better one is a Mind Blank Item, but as an 8th level spell this will be expensive. SRD - "The subject is protected from all devices and spells that detect, influence, or read emotions or thoughts. This spell protects against all mind-affecting spells and effects as well as information gathering by divination spells or effects." |
| ck2001wendt11-04-04, 09:43 AM | There's also a set of glasses/lenses (called "eyes") in one of the Forgotten Realms supplements. Grants immunity to mind-affecting spells and REFLECTS them back on the caster. Might just be for magic users, though, and again it's about 100,000 GP (expensive!) |
| Erus11-04-04, 10:57 AM | Exactly the kind of things I was looking for, thanks. Ring of Prot from evil. Spell level 1 X Casterlevel 1 x 2000gp x 4 (continuous function) 8000gp base? |
| Ricky11-04-04, 11:29 AM | Is the rest of your party 15th level? If so, get the wizard to cast Mind Blank on you. The spell lasts a full day and protects you from all mind-affecting spells (among other things). He can cast it on you at the beginning of every day. |
| was_fired11-04-04, 11:55 AM | The best option seems to be the amulet of protection from evil (with only the final effect) 2000 * 1 * 1 * 4 * .75 (not the whole spell) = 6,000gp To be honest as a DM I would not allow this item however since it grants a bit too much bang for your buck. If your DM rejects it ask if you can base it off magic circle against evil with all of the same price modifications and the same final effect. It costs a lot more, but this means the DM is more likely to accept it. That would be: 2000 * 3 * 5 * 1.5 * .75 = 33,750gp. |
| Erus11-04-04, 12:55 PM | Well, I am DMing that character. He will probably end up an NPC, but I know from past experience that my players will take note of his items at the very least, and would like to have the stats on it in case they want one. I do agree that 6k or 8k base price for immunity to ench etc. is a little low I do like your idea for the ring based off the circle vs evil though, and that would give CL5 vs people trying to dispell the effect. I think I will go that route. Thanks :) |
| Son of Khoron11-04-04, 04:33 PM | Check out prestige classes: Tattoed Monk, especially the White Crane tattoo. Holy Liberator levels get you immunity to charm, compulsion and enchantment effects |
| Tehril11-04-04, 05:13 PM | Protection from Evil only protects from COMPULSION effects cast by evil critters. Even then, 6K for it is low. For a permanent equivalent I'd place it around 15Kgp. So you are still subjected to anything that isn't a compulsion...such as Hold Person, Charm Person etc You ARE immune to having control exerted over you by such things as Domination. |
| was_fired11-04-04, 07:39 PM | You are imune to charms and compulsions. Charms include spells like charm monster. Compulsions include effects such as power word kill and hold person. |
| Megrim_Lord11-04-04, 07:59 PM | Well, a cloak of resistance grants a bonus to all 3 saves for a relatively cheap price, so if you want a singular save, see if you can convince your DM to let you have, let's say a Cloak of Willpower instead, that gives only a + to will saves in exchange for cutting the price of a normal CoR in half |
| Aeromus11-05-04, 05:18 AM | Caster level wouldn't be 1, since you have to be 3rd level to make the magic item. I know that most costs in the PHB 3.0 didn't take that into account but, I'm sure 3.5 does. So, the cost would be Spell level 1 X Casterlevel 3 (due to create wonderous item needing 3rd level anyway) x 2000gp x 4 (continuous function) Would be 24,000gp Magic circle against evil would be 40,000gp I think. |

Oh, in calculating the cost I had forgotten about that feature. So making a ring that duplicates the entire spell 24k would be realistic base cost. (that = 48k shelf price in my campaigns) That seems a lot more realistic for a perm ring of this power... SRD: Protection from Evil Abjuration [Good] Level: Clr 1, Good 1, Pal 1, Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S, M/DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Creature touched Duration: 1 min./level (D) Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless) Spell Resistance: No; see text This spell wards a creature from attacks by evil creatures, from mental control, and from summoned creatures. It creates a magical barrier around the subject at a distance of 1 foot. The barrier moves with the subject and has three major effects. First, the subject gains a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves. Both these bonuses apply against attacks made or effects created by evil creatures. Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature (by a magic jar attack, for example) or to exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment (charm) effects and enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject, such as dominate person). The protection does not prevent such effects from targeting the protected creature, but it suppresses the effect for the duration of the protection from evil effect. If the protection from evil effect ends before the effect granting mental control does, the would-be controller would then be able to mentally command the controlled creature. Likewise, the barrier keeps out a possessing life force but does not expel one if it is in place before the spell is cast. This second effect works regardless of alignment. Third, the spell prevents bodily contact by summoned creatures. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. Good summoned creatures are immune to this effect. The protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature. Arcane Material Component: A little powdered silver with which you trace a 3-foot -diameter circle on the floor (or ground) around the creature to be warded. I like this better yet. (don't necissarily want to mess with him always having a circle going, thats one of our group's favorite spells anyway) |
| Ty11-05-04, 09:20 AM | Check out the Occult Slayer PRC from Complete Warrior. Handy if you don't have lots of cash or a daily mind blank. Holy Liberator, as the previous posters stated, is also a good idea if you meet the qual's. |
| krichaiushii11-05-04, 03:03 PM | The feat Iron Will might help. As could a Cloak of Resistance +X. While not perfect solutions, they go a long way towards improving your saves. |
| tarkin11-05-04, 04:06 PM | Consider multi-classing if you can't qualify for the Prestige Classes. Hexblade if you are nuetral or evil, is a fighter type with Will being the good save. Paladin if you are good is a fighter type with Charisma boost to all saves. |
| Aluroon11-05-04, 05:01 PM | A ring of mind sheilding pops readily to mind as a start, its an item almost all my charcters end up picking up rather quickly (I really hate mind control), and it only costs 8k.. An armor with the Proof against Enchantments special quaility from Shining South also works, it negates the first three enchantment spells that would affect you each day (depending on how you interprit this it is the first 3 enechantment spells each day whos saves you fail), although it costs 50,000gp, outch. Other then that, why not tell you party mage, that because of the fact you have been taken hits for him for longer then he rememebers, maybe he can hit you up with a spell that will protect you. Hope this helps Aluroon |

I'm afraid you are wrong here. You have to have caster level 3 to take the item creation feat 'craft wonderous item'. you dont have to make items all at the minimum caster level for the feat, but at the minimum caster level for the spell being used. So caster level 1 for the protection from evil item was correct the first time. Is it unbalanced? Not sure, but lets look at it for a moment. Ring of Prot from evil. Spell level 1 X Casterlevel 1 x 2000gp x 4 (continuous function) 8000gp base? 8,000 gp for a caster level 1 ring, with protection from evil going at all times. so we have the following +2 deflection to AC +2 resistance to all saves blocks possesion. (ex. magic jar) prevents mental control from charm and compusion spells as well as dominate monster(but dosnt prevent them from being cast on the target) prevents summoned creatures from touching the character. Not bad for 8,000. Now the party in question is at 15th level. This is small chump change for the item. The party should be encountering challenges for their level. This includes smart monsters and enemies that try to use mind control and when they know it succeded, yet the commands are being ignored or see that the summoned creature cant claw apart the one character, what would be the best course of action then? Dispell magic! Now dispell magic is going to have a caster level check with a +10 bonus against a caster level 1 magic item. Its gonna get supressed even if a one is rolled on the caster level check. Balanced? Yeah, it probably is actually at a caster level 1. Oh and its only useful against evil characters and monsters. :D |
