im currently writing my character profile and i was thinking of having my character, who is a wizard, to be of noble birth. but he is an elf, what type of nobles do elves have and how could this change my characters relationships with the rest of the party members????

That depends a great deal on what setting you're playing in. Elves, Elven nobility and Elven relations with other races all differ from setting to setting.

From what I've garnered from various sources, Elven nobles are mostly like Human nobles.

You'll have a King and immediate family. Then the relations to the King outside the immediate family. Then the distantly related but not really related to the King.

King runs stuff and immediate family lives in luxury with special privledges (unless despised by King). The son/prince might be Captain of a prestigous non-combat military group, the daughter/princess could be second in command of a temple to an Elven Godess, etc, etc.

Cousins, aunts, and the like would probably get some luxury and a fair amount of leeway. Maybe the cousin wasn't quite good enough on his own, so he got into and stays in the wizard's academy because the King wants him there.

Then the others not in the royal line (or are so far removed there would have to be 200 people dead for them to gain the throne) that are self made, probably Lords and Ladies of merchant houses. The more powerful ones most likely are given favors by the King to keep their loyalty and/or hate the King and his family.

First of all, don't expect your DM to give you extras because you're a noble. Try the "noble house fallen on bad times" or "outcast because of suspicions of (treason/murder/whatever)" or "noble hiding his identity from usurper" tack. That way, your DM won't worry about you making large withdrawals from the royal treasury!

(No kidding. It's been done... and the result is usually a very annoyed DM.)
