Empower Spell/Maximize Spell rule [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-06-05, 04:58 PM Hello, the book (in as much as I've read it) doesn't really make this clear so I thought I'd ask you folks.

Both of these feats (Empower and Maximize spell) say they use up a spell slot two (or three) levels higher than the spell's actual level.

The way I interpreted this was that if I chose to use Empower Spell and Maximize spell together, at the time I used the spell, I'd then expend one of my spells two levels higher (for Empower) and one of my spells three levels higher (for Maximize).

The way that most people in my group interpreted it was that you add the two numbers and basically use a spell level FIVE levels higher.

It's entirely possible that I've missed something, but I wanted to check with some other people to see if I have, or if it's ambiguous or actually works how I think it works.

Any help would be appreciated.

It uses one slot five level higher. I am 100% sure.

from the SRD:

Multiple Metamagic Feats on a Spell: A spellcaster can apply multiple metamagic feats to a single spell. Changes to its level are cumulative. You can’t apply the same metamagic feat more than once to a single spell.

This is not correct, however it would make an interesting variant rule for sorcerors. I think with this i may remove the apllying a meta magic feat takes a full round rule, but only if they burned spell slots in the manner stated above. maybe just make it a standard acation, or maybe a standard and a move action put together.......... I think I'll post on this later.
