I was just wondering, can you add magical enchantments to make an improvised weapon more effective? For example, could you have a +1 coat hanger? Could you make a +1 alarm clock of throwing? I'm wondering because I created a tool that a character uses as a weapon without the proficiency, and he wants to make it magical. What do you think?

Personally, I'd rule that it's not meant to be a weapon so it can't be enchanted with weapon enchantments. I can't quote any RAW to that effect, but it would seem to make sense.
What exactly is the tool that he wants to enchant? Improvised weapons tend to break, so it's probably not a good idea to enchant it.

However, *theoretically* as long as it's a masterwork item it can be enchanted (generally speaking.), so if you specifically built a "war coathanger", you could do it... (I seem to remember something from one of the books about a dwarven fighting mug.) Gods only know why he would, but if he took a feat to gain exotic weapon proficiency (coathanger), I'd probably let him enchant a masterwork coathanger with weapon enchantments.
If you're okay with houseruling it, then if this tool is something like a chisel, pick, or hammer that would make a reasonably decent weapon, I'd say that as long as it's a masterwork tool, you could let them have their +1 flaming barbecue tongs or whatever it is...

Not by the RaW, however, like 99% of the questions on this board, the only real answer is 'Ask your DM'.
