Perhaps you could start your character with like being ill and having a high tempiture and healing dosent seem tor work. then easly flammable objects start to catch on fire if you touch them. you start to stare compulsivly into campfires and such and need to be josled to get you moveing. then once you get your first level in hellfire *bam* your first eldrich blast is a hellfire one, followed by you saying "Did i do that?" and then prompltly "OW!" at which time your other simptoms go away.

This way is all a matter of fluff and its on you and not the DM to incorperate your new class ;)

Thise ideas mostly involve devils and depending on alignment (im assuming chaotic good for your character) might be a problem.

1. while in town you are approched by a lovely barmaid (sucubus in desquise) who whispers sweet nothings in your ear. during you conversation she sais she knows a way to make you more powerful. you agree. she touches you and you immolate, cousing the bar to burn down. your allies gather around the inn to see you strolling outside the blaze, laughing like a maniac. once clear you faint, deimmolate, and dont seem to be the worse for wear. after that its hellfire time :P (this of cource would be set up by the dm and the sucubus itself might show up later again allowing a dm a plot-hook)

2. You start having stange dreams about the 9 hells (which can be very desturbing if your chaotic good). Later your party faces a minor devil which once it sees you laughs (at you) and flees. now the party knows something is up. you get taken to a temple for some sort of purification ritual. During the ritual a demon manifests and during this fight your hellfire powers manifest.

3. your character becomes possesed (unlike #2 and you follow possesion rules here) by a demon (probaly riding) and after that you gain the ability to use hellfire. after awhile the demon makes its presence known to you and then you and your allies are placed in a delema on how to get the thing out of you (think sub quest). however even after its gone you can still use your hellfire.

of cource is you liked my original suggestion some other things that might happen - strange dreams, fire seems to get bigger and brighter in your presence, "spontanious" learning of Igian (the languare of fire elementals, spend 2 skill points on your hellfire level to learn), the innablility to get warm by normal campfires (which might seem like a cold thing, its just hellfire is soo much hotter), a traveling cleric mistakes you for something evil.

Hope that helps

Demons have no relation to hellfire whatsoever. It's devils (which I prefer) that you're thinking of.

Anyway...hellfire is not an innately usable thing for most devils. Mechanically, it shows up in a handful of spells and the insidious Hellfire Engines (CR 19 war machines made in Cania that spit the stuff like water). Mephistopheles (creator thereof) and his direct underlings may also have the ability to use it innately, but I don't know.

DoJ's first suggestion there sounds interesting, but really doesn't fit the concept of how a devil would work. I'd suggest that you instead have a devil riding around, way in the background, slowly prodding you towards controlled/methodical destruction of something.

I would suggest making some kind of fiendish template for your character and breaking it up into a Prestige Class progression. It could confer onto your Eldritch Blast the subtypes Fire and Evil, for example, and grant you some resistance to Fire ... maybe adjust a few stats, give you glowing red eyes, mortgage your soul and condemn you to eternal damnation when the good guys catch you ....?

On the other hand side, he could just use the Hellfire Warlock from Fiendish Codex II...

I highly doubt he realized we were talking about a real PrC. We are, and the OP is looking for flavor ideas.

Maybe have the PC fight a devil, and when he slays it, a pillar of flames erupts from the corpse, with the face of Mephistopheles in the flames. He inspects the character, and smiles. "Yes, you're the perfect weapon against my foes. Allow me to grant you the strength to burn even that which fire cannot." With that, the pillar flares, enveloping the character. As he burns, he sees how this fire can be channeled, how he can make all who stand for tyranny burn in righteous flame... And the flame drops him, seared, but alive, and empowered.
