Howdy, So, I'm entering an already ongoing campaign, with veteran D&D players. They've been paying since the 70's and I've never played P&P D&D :D

Presently, the group is a 7 Human Illusionist, Dwarf 1 Fighter/6 Cleric(present main tank), Forsaken Elf 7 Wizard, and a 4 Ranger/4 Cleric.

There will be three new people; including myself, entering the campaign, which is "The Scarred Lands." This campaign is a white wolf campaign set in a post apocalyptic war between "The Titans" who are the parents of the Deities, and the Gods themselves. The Titans were ousted but at the cost of the elven god. So now elves can no longer breed and the youngest reported elf is 150 (if you were to choose to be an elf, you'd start at this age). Elves must kidnap humans to breed, creating half elves, who the elves use as their blood line, and pass their family name/wealth to.

In the scarred lands there are no gnomes, dragons, druids, nature bound races like Kiloreen. And the DM is adverse to any +LA races.

That said, the books I'm allowed are any general books for feats/skills, but the races are limited to the Scarred Lands Humans/variants, Mountain Dwarf, Charduni, Forsaken Dwarf, Forsaken Elf, Halfling, Half Orc, Drow, Half Elf, Wood Elf.

Human Variants: The human variants keep all human racial traits but can be allowed the following depending upon their region of living.

-2 Str, +2 Int
+2 str Or Con, -2 Int or Wis
+2 Dex, -2 Cha
-2 Int, +2 Wis
+2 Con, -2 Cha

The DM I believe would be flexible on any feats/skills we'd like to use from any canonized source as long as it's not pure munchkin, and we're able to argue how it came to be in a world facing the aftermath of a celestial war. As well, Magic is very rare as the titans are defeated(have been chopped up, chained to the bottom of the oceans, ect, since they cannot be killed).

Alright, all of that stuff said, they are obviously really needing a rogue. I can't get any feed back from the other two new people who'll be starting about their desired class, so being the considerate person I try to be, I've been really focusing on being a rogue.....Although I think a Charduni Barbarian or Human Variant Sorcerer would be more interesting.

So, any suggestions out there on a class suggestion that'd be best to assist this party? I'm a bit uneasy about just forcing the hand of other players especially when I'm coming into their campaign, but we'll be having our first gaming session in two weeks, and I have to even decide on the basics of the character. Ah yes, forgot to mention, Since the highest level character in the campaign is 8, the three new people will be starting at 6.

How would ya'll handle this? :)

Thanks for any suggestions/advice.

Well, they need a rogue, and it's always good to be considerate of the party, especially as a new player. Judging from your post, I'm going to assume that you are fairly familiar w/ the rules, but if anything confuses you, just ask.

My suggestion would be to build either a Halfling, Human, or Half-Elf Rogue/Sorecer multiclass, aiming for the Arcane Trickster Prestige Class from the DMG. It is one of my Top 5 PrC's of all time, and I don't even like Rogues. It should be fairly easy to pull off, gives you the magic you want, AND gives the party the Rogue they need.

Btw, I'm not familiar w/ the setting, so that may make my advice null and void.

How are there no Gnomes allowed but there is a level 7 Gnome Illusionist in the party? Drow have an LA+2, does the DM know that?

If he is giving you the drow with no LA I say go for that and play a Rogue/Wizard or Rogue/Duskblade (PHB2) (if allowed).

If that is not doable I recoomend a regular human sorcerer. The variants you noted have a -2 to CHA which is worse than having no bonus at all.

Yes, that was a typo on my part, I'm used to talking about gnome illusionists, he's a human. Dark Elves have a LA +1 in this setting as they aren't typical drow, but are a core race here so are allowed by him.

And thank you for the suggestions so far =)
