The problem is that Shinigami's are Ethereal (it's the only similar translation into D&D terms). We're trying to find a way to let this player become Ethereal for extended ammounts of time (like, unlimited). It is a 'modified' Ethereal though. The player can't go through solid objects or people. Also, there is some form of gravity effecting the player, although it can be broken. Can anyone think of (or create) a spell or something that would let a player do this? |

If so, I would say that she has to keep a supply of those soul pills on hand for the first few levels of Shinigami, until she gets the hang on ejecting her soul from her body, basically. Then, whenever she goes into Shinigami mode, she gains Ethereal, like the spell but no time limit, can attack other ethereal beings and cannot heal normally (to maintain balance.) Also, they will have to find a way to protect their body while they are out of it. I dunno. The DM might want to impose a time-limit on how long the character can be in Shinigami mode. Maybe some kind of fatique counter or something. Otherwise, they might just decide to stash their body somewhere in a hospital or something and adventure as an Ethereal being. This might be interesting if there is ready and easy access to the Planes. It might get boring if there aren't too many ethereal beings around to fight. I would treat the class as a monk variant. Try to work out with the DM some kind of trade-off for the Etherealness. Maybe take a smaller hit die or a penalty to XP? |
