| CapnCJ10-14-07, 06:09 PM | Right, our group has decided to start an evil campaign after our current one pretty much fell through; the DM had no time to run it. Sooooo, we rolled up new stats, and mine are: 10, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17 Snore. Still, I need to pick a race and class. We're starting at level 4, and remember, it's evil! So far the party has a human warlock, a half-fiend warrior, and a werewolf scout (We think...) Help me out dudes. Books we have are: PHB PHB2 DMG DMG2 MM MM2 Complete Arcane Complete Divine Complete Warrior Complete Adventurer Races of Stone Races of the Wild Dungeonscape Might have missed one, but oh well. Thanks in advance! |
| happy_fuzzy10-14-07, 09:02 PM | are the stats are arbitrarily in that order? (the 1st 10 is str, second 10 is dex) if not, put the 17 in str. Take barbarian levels, im not sure which race. Then when you are 8ish (maybe lower or higher, i forgot reqs for it) take frenzied berserker. Of course if you don't want to kill your party ignore my advice. |
| CapnCJ10-15-07, 06:41 AM | I'd rather not kill the entire party, really. I was thinking druid, but i'm not sure what race. Suggestions? |
| Ecalsneerg10-15-07, 06:47 AM | Still, I need to pick a race and class. We're starting at level 4, and remember, it's evil! So far the party has a human warlock, a half-fiend warrior, and a werewolf scout (We think...) Half-fiend is LA +4, werewolf is LA +2/3 with 2 animal HD. How are you all at level 4? I'd suggest a gnome or dwarf druid. Con is important, and they have good Con. |
| CapnCJ10-15-07, 06:57 AM | Half-fiend is LA +4, werewolf is LA +2/3 with 2 animal HD. How are you all at level 4? The DM is allowing the Half-fiend to start at 5, and the Werewolf... It seems he's figured it out wrong |
| Ecalsneerg10-15-07, 07:08 AM | The DM is allowing the Half-fiend to start at 5, and the Werewolf... It seems he's figured it out wrong That seems slightly unfair... why is he getting added priviledges over the other players? As for the werewolf... he may have figured it out right. An afflicted werewolf is only LA +2 and 2 Hd, so with a scout level would end up as level 5 as well, albeit with little control over his lycanthropy. Anyway... your party definitely needs a healer, so a druid or cleric, preferably a high Con or Wis race to up its capabilities. |
| Dragazza10-15-07, 05:16 PM | Hey, I'm the half fiend of this campaign! I can see what you mean, but surely it'd balance through me getting less experience? Originally I was after playing a vampire but that went out of the window due to the la +8. Still, I was keen to take the template. It's also worth bearing in mind that my CR would be lower than the rest of the party? I'm pretty sure anyway. |
| hunterc31110-15-07, 06:12 PM | I've always been a big fan of the easy-entry Master of Shrouds for an evil character. My favorite way in is Cleric 1/Favored Soul 2 (or vice versa). You then have all the requirements to start MoS at level 4. Your ability scores are crap, so it will be nice to have a summoned minion to handle any melee situations. The shadow you get at MoS 2 will be nice in melee, because many enemies at level 5 do not possess magic weapons of some sort, making the shadow untouchable by everything that isn't magical or a spell, and even then there's a 50% miss chance most of the time. You can progress whichever spell class you'd like, though if you choose Favored Soul, you get spontaneous spell progression AND the cleric's rebuke undead progression through all 10 levels. When the PrC ends, you can continue on with whatever class you chose to progress with in spells, or alternate if you feel like it, though you'll never gain 9th level spells that way. You'd have to be Human, or you'll deal with XP penalties soon after the PrC ends, unless you alternate. Doesn't hurt to have that extra feat though, since you have to use up two feats already by level 4 to qualify for the class anyways. Put the 17 and 13 in WIS and CHA, either way is fine, though you'll have to focus on boosting the 13 ability score as you progress. |
| happy_fuzzy10-15-07, 08:48 PM | play a druid going into planar shepard |
| Ixmof10-15-07, 10:24 PM | I would go with a class that would be able to help your allies. You should be able to buff/heal in some way, or your high LA warrior is going to go down pretty quickly despite being level 5. I therefore agree with everyone who said you should go into some divine spell casting class. |
| Surgo10-15-07, 11:04 PM | For those stats, Druid or Wizard. I wouldn't be too upset about the player with the half-fiend. LA +4 is just stupid and no one in their right mind would take it anyway without a boost. |
| hunterc31110-16-07, 02:23 AM | I would go with a class that would be able to help your allies. Heck no. You're evil. Screw your allies. You're out for yourself mister! If your group's fighter-type gets a boo-boo on his bum, a cure xxx wounds wand should suffice for situations like that. Otherwise, it's all about you. Now get out there and be selfish! |
| Johnny_Angel10-16-07, 02:31 AM | I think you should play an Evil Bard. Why? Heck, why not? What's better than mercilessly killing innocent people while singing and dancing about it? |
| Cifer10-16-07, 04:27 AM | Heck no. You're evil. Screw your allies. You're out for yourself mister! And here we come to the reason why every one of my evil characters has some reason to work with the other PCs: I like having a game to play in. I don't like excessive PvP. |
| CapnCJ10-16-07, 04:51 AM | I'm thinking an evil druid, but i'm totally stuck on a race. I dislike dwarves, so they're out. I might just play human, but then I miss stat jumps from races... Ideas? Also, anyone know what book Planar Shepard is in? And finally, anyone got any other evil druid PrCs to recommend? |
| Johnny_Angel10-16-07, 06:03 AM | Wild Elf might suit you for the race. Beast Heart Adept might interest you for a PrC. |
| Cifer10-16-07, 08:38 AM | I might just play human, but then I miss stat jumps from races... Well, a druid can't really have too many feats and skills, can he? Also, anyone know what book Planar Shepard is in? And finally, anyone got any other evil druid PrCs to recommend? Planar Shepherd is from Faiths of Eberron, though I recommend not playing it - it's a really large piece of really smelly cheese, even if you don't mess with Dal Quor. Assuming the forms of a Pit Fiend, an Efreet (hello, three wishes per day!) or a Solar is not exactly balanced. Otherwise, I'd just say go for Druid20. By the way: The Blighter does not exist. There is no such class and there never has been. *takes out sunglasses* |
| CapnCJ10-16-07, 12:46 PM | I'm thinking Druid20. I was flicking through Complete Divine today, found Spontaneous Healer. That, combined with Augment Healing, would hopefully sort out the party's health woes. Had another question, RE animal companions. In the level 4 list I noticed Large Viper. Could I ride this, if I wanted to? (It's a Large creature according to D20srd, and it's name...) |
| hunterc31110-16-07, 02:15 PM | Had another question, RE animal companions. In the level 4 list I noticed Large Viper. Could I ride this, if I wanted to? (It's a Large creature according to D20srd, and it's name...) If you don't mind the dizziness from swaying back and forth as you go. ;) If your DM allows it, grab some ranks in Ride (a viper falls under the classificition "ill-suited as a mount" so you'll get a -5 on your Ride checks to begin with) and sway away. However, keep in mind that it may be large in size, but it's also very slender in width. The size comes from the length I'd imagine, and the space it occupies coiled. Could be tricky getting a saddle to stay on. |
| CapnCJ10-16-07, 02:59 PM | This is D&D, stuff doesn't have to make sense :p Anyway, suggestions for early feats? |
| happy_fuzzy10-16-07, 07:31 PM | if your DM allows feats from other settings then I would pick up Initiate of Malar (Players guide to faerun i think) which fits since malar is an evil god and you can worship him as an evil druid. This just basically gives you free augment summoning and some other abiltiies. Natural Spell is also a must for most druids, also combat casting is always an ok choice for a caster. |
| Surgo10-16-07, 08:58 PM | Gatekeeper Initiate from Eberron puts some pretty neat spells on your list too (protection from evil, dimensional anchor, mind blank; it seriously sucks when no one can cast dimensional anchor). The Druid Handbook on the CO board is great for this sort of thing though, everything useful is already listed. Wisdom is your only stat that really matters anyway, so unless you have a weird elf variant that gives you +2 wis / -2 str, just be a human. |
| Cifer10-17-07, 10:48 AM | Wisdom is your only stat that really matters anyway, so unless you have a weird elf variant that gives you +2 wis / -2 str, just be a human. I assume you have not picked up the errate on wildshape - it now doesn't confer hit points of the new form, meaning you'll have to have a decent con modifier. So you now have a character depending on 2 abilities. |
| Jexil10-18-07, 10:55 AM | And finally, anyone got any other evil druid PrCs to recommend? The Blighter from Complete Divine is an interesting direction for an evil druid. |
| Dog_O_War10-18-07, 12:05 PM | Okay, what I am about to suggest is not for your "average" player. Make a druid with the shifter variant out of the PHBII. Play an orc; not some dirty half-breed but a pure blooded Orc. Put that 17 (turned 18 'cause of 4th level) onto strength. I forgot to mention that your first level should be barbarian, so you can take power attack and the more important cleave at third level. Your 13 should go on wis so you can at least cast 1st level spells. The 12 on con is the next obvious choice (so you have some semblence of hit points). Finally, since you'll just qualify ask the DM if you can use the guardian spirit out of the DMGII (one of my favorite books btw) and get a rampart/<something you like> combo. The high strength you'll have from raging while shifted (30 I think) more than makes up for any other short-comings you may have. I would still invest a fair few points into hide/move silently, and spot/listen to compensate for the lack of other stats. Finally, since magic items aren't as useful to you (because you'll probably be shifted most of the time), take mostly druid levels, and ask the DM if you can create potions using a different medium (think breaking fingerbones, or eating infused roots); you'll want to take the brew potion feat by 9th at the latest if you're allowed to do this. Wisdom will obviously consume the rest of your stat bonuses from level. Be prepared to not having the ability to cast new levels of spells as soon as you get them; you may want to have a fairly even level progression between druid and barbarian because of this. I wouldn't bother with prestige classes at all. |

A druid with a starting Wisdom of 11? Yes. As "crappy" as that sounds, the trade-off is 30 strength. That is a 30 strength at 4th level (hell, as early as 2nd actually). He would have a +13 to attack and be doing 1d6+15 with every bite. Think of him as a fighter if it helps. A fighter that can cast cure light wounds... |

Just play a fighter (or beter yet, a barbarian) with a level of cleric (or a lot of Cure Light Wounds potions) then? Sure, the insane attack/damage is great, but if I played a spell casting class, I'd actually want him to have decent spell casting capabilities. |
| hunterc31110-19-07, 12:56 AM | if I played a spell casting class, I'd actually want him to have decent spell casting capabilities. Since when does a druid not have decent spell casting capabilities? |
| Archangel_Tyrael10-19-07, 01:19 AM | A druid with a starting Wisdom of 11? Since when does a druid not have decent spell casting capabilities? When they have a Wisdom of 11. The Blighter from Complete Divine is an interesting direction for an evil druid. Interesting choice, but not a good one. |
| CapnCJ10-19-07, 04:17 AM | I like how you've developed the 11wis idea, Dog, but I think i'm gonna go for actual spellcasting. |
| Jexil10-19-07, 12:03 PM | Interesting choice, but not a good one. Yeah, I mentioned it because the Blighter is tailored for the concept of an "evil druid," plus I always thought it might be a fun PrC to try. But beyond the interesting rolepalying possibilites, it's definitely not the best option out there. |
| FoulQ10-19-07, 10:50 PM | *sigh* Being evil does not mean that you go around being stupid and killing each other. Being evil does not mean being STUPID. It's quite reasonable for a bunch of evil people to say "Alright guys, we all want power...if we work together, we will be able to achieve more power than if we work alone. So let's work together raping some peasant women!" Of course, that doesn't mean the loot is divided fairly :D On a more on-topic note, being a druid is probably your safest bet. It makes you the best at everything! You should totally be a vermin lord from BoVD, just because they are AWESOME. :P |
| jradd77710-20-07, 12:25 AM | I didn't notice if you've picked a race but what about a non-psionic Thri-Kreen, he'd make a wicked looking evil character, especially riding a large viper and shifting into whatever other form all the time. |
