| Fort deadly kick09-14-05, 07:00 PM | I feel recently that I am falling out of interest with D&D. I really like the roleplaying aspect of the game, but the other players seem fixated on the combat and mechanics of it, and one player keeps asking about every fifteen minutes whether we have enough exp to level up :twitch:. There arn't any groups nearby I could join, so I'm stuck here for at least a year until I move for college. My DM is a bit crap, he delivers his lines in a dull monotone and him and the other players are constantly bickering. The players here either seem uninterested or obsessed with rules. I have offered to DM several times, but as soon as I do, several others remember they want to as well, and we end up with several people wanting to DM at the same time. We have in the party: Warforged monk: CONSTANTLY asking about XP or money or items, or saying 'I should do more damage if you thiunk about it, cause I'm made of metal'. Munchkin as well. Changeling rogue: Good guy, actually a decent roleplayer, but always on his phone or gameboy. Shifter druid: Seems more or less there because the rogue is her brother and they and the DM have known each other forever. doesn't seem interested in the game. Human ranger: Good guy, but quiet. Rarely says or does much. Generally overshadowed/outnoised by Monk DMPC Cleric of pelor: The DM is sketchy, never plans adventures, gets very, very touchy if you question him on rules or setting. Bickers with players as well. possibly a good roleplayer, but havent seen him do much because he is generally stuck with bieng DM human wizard/rogue: Me. I will admit to occasionally hogging the limelight with my character with roleplaying, but I don't find the combat very interesting. there's a couple others who are thinking of joining. the monks girlsfriend and a fairly gothic girl I've known for a while who I think mightme quite good at roleplay (hur hur) This isn't really much moe than a general ***** about my group, but I was wondering what peoples experiences said was good. I could: -Give the game a rest until I get to college and can meet new players and groups. -Try DM'ing a small game with somepeople I know to be good roleplayers and explain to the others why. (Not sure what I'd be saying here). - stick with it and hope it gets better I feel most inclined to choose the first, and maybe after a while go with the DMing option. I was wondering if this sounded good? (And yes, I realise how stupid this is and how spineless I sound. It's not been a good day.) |
| Gedrin09-14-05, 07:13 PM | I've got friends whom I played with at one time, but no longer. We're still friends. If you can't go to your friends and say,"You know...this really isn't my thing. I think I'm going to bow out for a while," then someone's taking the game too seriously, and needs to stop playing anyway. My recomendation: Bow out. No harm. No foul. You are not required to like everything your friends like. Look around, maybe find a game you'll enjoy more. Be certain to keep an open mind about playing. If you can't find a game you enjoy playing, DO NOT start up as a DM. You probably just don't enjoy playing D&D. That's okay too. |
| Iver Gearsham09-14-05, 07:20 PM | Take the new people and Run! do not let them become bad gamers! |
| Tiran09-14-05, 09:19 PM | Take a break from it till college. Once you find a group in college you'll be excited to play since you haven't in months. |
| Rathje09-15-05, 12:28 AM | Personally, I don't think I'd be able to give up for a year. I'd be dying to play by six months. That said, how about online? You could find a play-by-post forum with role-playing emphasis. If you can't find anything, I could see if you could be worked into a game of mine that's starting up, if you'd like. Send a PM my way if you're interested. It's not the same as real life, but it's better than giving up entirely. Talking helps. Even if it's "I'd like a start a more role-play based game. Would anyone want to play? There wouldn't be that much combat, as a warning." If some of your group wants to play, you could set up another time to play your game. Role-play based groups tend to work better with less people, anyway, if I'm not mistaken. Then, as the grand finale, after a while of playing in both groups, tell them you're swamped for preparing for your sessions, playing in the other sessions, and doing whatever else you do (school, I'm guessing?). Back out of the combative game, but run role-play game, as you "have time for it, but only one." Don't do that right away; it'll look suspicious. Muahahah. |
| High Octane09-15-05, 10:04 AM | When the game stops being fun, it becomes a chore. Stop playing if you arent having fun. If you want to try DMing, thats always an option. You can try it for a few sessions and if you arent having fun, then stop. You don't have any obligation to play D&D. No one does. |
| Phrennzy09-15-05, 11:25 AM | Try Dming. When everyone says, "Me too!", set up a schedule. Or possibly start a new group with the people you think would make a good game. That guy plays a gameboy during the game? Booted from my group. |
| amethal09-15-05, 12:00 PM | Warforged monk: saying 'I should do more damage if you think about it, cause I'm made of metal'.Yeah, I hate how D&D's rules for living constructs are so unrealistic. If I was the DM, I'd give him a +1 damage bonus, then have him crumble into a big pile of rust the next time it rains. Or maybe get him to read the Eberron book and find out what a warforged is actually made of (i.e. not all metal). If you aren't having fun, and are caught up with a group whose style doesn't match your own, then you need to quit. Or maybe try it with someone else as a DM and see if that's any better (although I have a feeling the player of the warforged might not be the best choice for DM .....). |
| Doopliss09-15-05, 12:13 PM | If you're still reading this topic, I'd try WebRPG (http://www.webrpg.com). It has a roleplaying aspect like all D&D, but still combat, d20s, etc... And it has the bonus of tons of visual aides that can be put down at will by the DM! :) The site seems to be down at the moment, not sure when it will come back. You may want to bookmark it for future use. |
