Hey, I'm making a new sorceror character and I'm a little bit confused about something. When you first make your character do you get your familiar for free or do you have to do the 100gp/ 24hr ritual. If so that kinda sucks because that means I won't be able to get my familiar at first lvl and I really wanted to work him into my characters background. So do I get my first familiar for free or not?

I'm pretty sure that it's free. There's no reason why a first level character would give up their entire cashpool for a crappy familiar.

reading the class it is a first level special feat so no cost. The spirit of the write up seems to be that you can pick it so your background story is a great place to put that. You can also forgo it at first level to use the feats that give a more powrful faimilar later on.

Pardon the tangential question, but since this ia about familiars, I thought it may be best to ask it here:

There was a discussion about enabling your Familiar to use command activated magical items like wands. Can someone either tell me where it is or tell me how it can be done?

Ya, that's what I thought it is just that in the Familiar entry in the sorceror's class features it says: A sorceror may obtain a familiar. Doing so takes 24hrs and raw materials costing 100gp. I hope this just means after 1st lvl.

No, you have to pay for the familliar. The ability only allows you to get one. It doesn't give you one automatically.
