An imp's poison in the SRD has a fortitude save DC of 13. On another thread someone mentioned that the DC of a familiar's poison would go up because the familiar is treated as having more HD because it uses the master's HD number for effects. I've just always had it where the DC stayed the same. Have I been playing it wrong? And if so could someone tell me how I'm supposed to calculate the DC for the poison?

Save DC = 10 + Hit Dice/2 + Ability modifier (should be listed for the imp in the explanation of the poison)
If any of those changes, so does the DC. Nothing to add here.

Strangely enough it doesn't. In the SRD all it says is 'The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +2 racial bonus.' Thank you for pointing that out...now to go increase my imp's DC.

That would be my interpretation as well. But, as with any such issue, check with your Game Master to make sure you're on the same page.

I do believe it is CON-based, since most poisons are. It makes sense too, because half hit dice is +1 and 13 CON is +1

10+1+1+2 racial = 14

Poison (Ex)

Injury, Fortitude DC 14, initial damage sleep for 1 minute, secondary damage sleep for 1d3 hours. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +2 racial bonus.

He is asking if a familiar's master's HD can be used to determine its poison dc, rather than its own racial HD, which does not improve.:P

Those are rather round-about ways of answering what is otherwise a rather straightforward question...

Strangely enough it doesn't
I meant the ability should be listed, as in "the save DC is con-based."

Note that the racial bonus is added in addition to your con mod.

Thus, the familiar's poison dc would really be 10+1/2HD+con mod+2racial,

or 12+1/2HD+con mod.:)

Sadly, only racial HD applies to the poison DC. As a familiar, it doesn't get anything beyond its CON modifier and the racial +2 bonus.

From Customer Service:

As poison DCs are generally HD-dependent, do the posion DCs of, say, a pseudodragon character increase with class levels? How about the DCs of a pseudodragon familiar (given the wording of the familiar class feature: "Hit Dice: For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master’s character level or the familiar’s normal HD total, whichever is higher.")

Those poison DCs increasing is based on normal creature advancement. It will not apply to the Pseudodragon. It will keep the listed flat rate.

I think I'll just not say what I think about customer service here. The rule is pretty definite "For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use whichever is higher" - I'm pretty sure the poison DC is related to the HD, as has been explained by several people.
