You guys know I am a noob.
The PHB says I need the Monster Manuel to get a familiar, but I don't really have the money, even though I badly want a Raven familiar.

Since I'm new is it worth the trouble to try and get a familiar yet or should I just focus on my one character and go to familiar and non-core races later?

I'm confused. When you say you "don't really have the money" are you saying you can't afford the Monster Manual, or can't afford a familiar. Cause if you need the stats of Raven you could check the "SRD".

Or I could help you.

I personally think familiars are cool, more chances to roleplay. Do what you FEEL would be fun.

I hope this helped.

I'm extrememly limited in my income due to the fact I'm 16, still in high school, can't drive yet due to the gay driving laws in Tennessee, and I don't have a job.

Therefore cash is limited and the Monster Manuel is out of my like 3 dollar budget. My parents are asses and don't buy me stuff, ever.

I think a familiar would rock, but I might be too unexperienced, and I don't have the stats like it says in the PHB, which BTW I got for free from a teacher who's kids used to play. I guess the kid's friend had the MM.

These glossy black birds are about 2 feet long and have wingspans of about 4 feet. They combine both claws into a single attack.

The statistics presented here can describe most nonpredatory birds of similar size.

This is 100% official, it's from the SRD or system reference document v3.5.

Private message me if you need further help. The little colored dot next to everyone's picture has an option to private message someone. I'm willing to help you. Just let me know. OK?

Hit Dice: 1/4 d8 (1 hp)

Initiative: +2

Speed: 10 ft. (2 squares), fly 40 ft. (average) (What's the difference between walking and flying, wouldn't my raven fly everywhere?)

Armor Class: 14 (+2 size, +2 Dex), touch 14(Is this when they use something like burning hands or chill touch?), flat-footed 12 (This is when a battle starts, like during a surprise round, I read it in the combat basic in the PHB)

Base Attack/Grapple: +0/–13 (What's a grapple? Like when they rip someone's eyes out? Can they do that?)

Attack: Claws +4 melee (1d2–5)

Full Attack: Claws +4 melee (1d2–5) (Is that 1 to 5 1d2 or negative 5? And isn't -13 +4 like -9?)

Space/Reach: 2-1/2 ft./0 ft. (Huh?)

Special Qualities: Low-light vision

Speed: 10 ft. (2 squares), fly 40 ft. (average) (What's the difference between walking and flying, wouldn't my raven fly everywhere?)

Well... yeah, but thats just in case its not flying for whatever reason.

Armor Class: 14 (+2 size, +2 Dex), touch 14(Is this when they use something like burning hands or chill touch?)

Its when people use touch spells AGAINST it.

flat-footed 12 (This is when a battle starts, like during a surprise round, I read it in the combat basic in the PHB)

:)

Base Attack/Grapple: +0/–13 (What's a grapple? Like when they rip someone's eyes out? Can they do that?)

They probably could, thats up to your DM. And yeah grapple is like... where one character grabs another in combat for whatever reason.

Full Attack: Claws +4 melee (1d2–5) (Is that 1 to 5 1d2 or negative 5? And isn't -13 +4 like -9?)

Its 1d2 minus 5 damage. That +4 is the attack bonus.

Space/Reach: 2-1/2 ft./0 ft. (Huh?)

Thats a little confusing even for me. But im almost certain it means it takes up 2 feet of space (meaning you could fit 4 in one square). The space of a medium creature is 5 ft meaning only one in a square if that helps at all.

Challenge Rating: 1/6 (This confuses me, I don't know what it is)

That means it would be a good challenge for four people of level one sixth. that sounds a little confusing so I'll use a better example. An unraveler (planar handbook) has a CR of 12, meaning that four people of level 12 would find it to be a good challenge.

I hope that helps clear things up.

can't drive yet due to the gay driving laws in Tennessee

Since when do laws have a gender, and for that much, a sexual perference?

I'm sorry I offended you.

But who cares, I'm not answering that, techincal *****.

How do you use a familiar?
Do you get to roleplay as two characters essentially?

Such as in the initiative in battle it goes in normal order say:
Raquaio
Aramil
Raven
Monster

Would I fight as both Raven and my character Raquaio?
And during journeys, say in dungeons, would it be like Raquaio moves and opens the chest. Raven flies and lands on the table.

Familiars are essentially extensions of the master. Take another quick read through the blurb on 'em in the Players Handbook and you'll see why this is. Typically familiars are not given their own initiative, but share their master's. Most of the time you'll want to keep 'em out of combat, especially at low levels. They're generally quite easy to kill and your PC will take a fairly hefty XP hit when his familiar takes a dirt nap.

Once you hit higher levels, though, the familiar becomes a useful helper, spy, and general gopher - er, go-fer.
