Okay, I just played a session where I just happened to kill the BBG in a rather cool unconventional way, and after I tell you what happened I would like to read what others have done, seen, or heard of...I didn't know where else to put this, sorry if it is in the wrong forum.

Background: My character:
11 level overall (8 Ranger - 2 Lycanthrope - 1 Bear)
TWF - very little ranged weapons, pure melee.
Gear - (Special Items) Cape of Mountebank
- (Regular Items) Silk Rope

These come into play, and are very important.

BBG: Ogre Mage (I never asked how many extra levels our DM gave this guy, but he was really tough)

I killed this guy once before, but he had a contingency body and came back for us, and he is really ****** at me, just so you know. Before we fight, he is using him Greater Invis, has a Spectral Hand out, and is flying 80ft above us.

First round, he uses Grimm Revenge and takes my left hand, boy does this **** me off, and it makes me almost useless since I am a TWF fighter, and can't use a bow. So for the next two rounds I just think and take one pot shot with a crossbow someone gives me...then it hits me. I have a rope, and our Druid hit him with Fairy Fire when his Invis ran out...so I spend the next 3 rounds trying to tie a lasso, DC 15 (lucky for me I have Silk Rope and it gives me +2 and our Cleric cast a spell giving us all +1 to skill checks...to bad for me, my one hand gives me a -2 penalty)...but I finally tie it, and now try to figure out how to reach him since he is 80ft up...my obvious choices are our Rogue who has a Luna Moth and our Druid who has flying armor...but then it hits me...my Cape. But then the worst thing happens, the Ogre Mage goes Gaseous Form on us...I am screwed. Init is as follows: BBG, me, Druid...

BBG Goes Gaseous...I hold me turn...our Druid casts Dispell magic on his gaseous form, he pops back into sight...I use my Cape, dimensional door to 5' away, he fails his attack of opportunity, I make my touch attack and loop my rope around him and grab on...my added weight causes him to exceed his Medium carrying weight so he can no longer fly....we drop like a rock 80' down causing 8d6 damage, I walk away...he does not....we then burn the ever loving snot out him and are victorious.

Now I would like to hear what you guys have done against BBG's.

I hate to nit pick but I was under the impression from the description of Dimension Door: After using this spell, you can't take any other actions until your next turn. That said action would be impossible. But kudos for the ingenuity:)

...Interesting...

Well, once the PC Barbarian in my campaign charged the BBEG wizard, who cast Vampiric Touch on his initiative, killing the Barbarian the next turn.

Oh, you mean times the BBEG died.... Sorry.

/sigh, one of my characters, a paladin of slaughter, ran at a vampire, down stairs, and tripped, into a spike pit, a spell storing spike pit, of finger of death, he died, the vampire died. laughing

isnt lycanthrope the ecl of 3. and the bear discriptor an additional 3-6. but every other dm is different. so the level of a 8th level ranger would be 14 - 17. i might be wrong but what ever. :D

Oh yeah, I've certainly had my share of interesting BBEG fights.

Such as that one versus the bugbear chieftain, and his girlfriend, when we were 5th lvl (My character was a halfling TWF rogue). And my halfling went for the bugbear's GF, thinking it was going to be an easy kill.
Well, he did hit, but the chieftain went into a rage at the sight of his GF being bashed, and attacked the cleric.
Then, I started rules-lawyering. "Hey, shouldn't the bugbear attack me? It was me who hit the GF and everything."
So then that bugbear attacked my halfling and put him on 4 hp (out of 30-something) in one swipe.
Of course, then my halfling makes a critical hit-sneak attack on the bugbear (40-something damage) and tumbles away to groan at the gashing wound in his side where his lung should be.

And then, the next BBEG fight (This DM is really good at Boss fights) we are now 7th lvl, and fighting a vampire called Vastival Morval. My halfling goaded the vampire before the fight, and when combat started, the vampire dominated my halfling and made him walk over, where the vampire started to drink him.
My halfling escapes the battle (after the cleric casted circle of protection from evil focused on him) into a new room where a lovely pile of treasure was waiting for him, and he grabs a particular +2 rapier to finish off the vampire with.
Of course, the vampire slams my halfling for two negative levels, so he retreats again.
Meanwhile the rest of the party just thought of the old stake-in-the-heart idea, and the only thing closest to a stake at the time is a quarterstaff. 2 rounds are spent sharpening the quarterstaff (while the fighters grapple the vampire to buy time, Vampy didn't even bother to gas out for some reason) and then spent the next two rounds trying to stab him with the stake.
Why?
Because none of us had anything that could deal reliable damage to bypass his DR, without hurting the party as well (Sure, the wizard had fireball, but that's not a good option in a 20x20 foot room.)
And after that battle, when we found a secret door in the room, my halfling had to get knocked unconscious by freaking dragon bile poison on the doorknob. He was held conscious by nothing more than artificial enhancements!

I_Strahd: We are using the Lycanthrope template here on the Wizard site...it gives level progression so I don't get all the Lycanthrope goodies till 7 levels later...right now all I have is +2 Wisdom, bear form, hybrid form, +2 Strength, and claw attack....I still am waiting for my bite, and all the other bonuses to Str and Con....so it all works out.

My group had an interesting encounter just a while back, they had been running around the woods with the good ol NE druid and his companions, when they came to a custom monster of mine, called a cleric killer, it was essentially a large construct formed in the same way a flesh golem is, except that it was made of former clerics and was built as an anti divine caster tank so to speak(a certain region in my world has been crusading against divine casters in a bit of a surprise twist and built these).
My party being 17th level and all but 2 of the 5 having leadership and their cohorts with them, this was meant to be quite a fight, being a slightly epic challenge. Now a good while back in and out of game, our group's strange member, a wilder/bard/uncarnate who dresses in bright orange armor, wears goggles of nightsight everywhere and carries tons of random other trinkets bought a contingency spell to help him escape a black dragon, one to let him go to the plane of shadow and another to get back....but the dragon was dead before he ever needed them.
So one year later in the game he comes up to this cleric killer and suddenly remembers that he has this. So he decides to start slowly, very slowly, moving toward it hiding, and as he does so, the slightly incompetent cleric of heironeous cast Prot. from evil, and now being a cleric killer, one of their abilities was to sense divine magic within x distance, and so it of course sniffs that out and goes to full alert and runs headlong at Mr. Cleric, as it does this he passes by the bardic wild uncarnate who gets an AoO and manages to touch him, he then screams the command word to use the spell "CHANGE PLACES" dragging the cleric killer to the plane of shadow, where he then promptly let go and yells "CHANGE BACK" returning and leaving the golem to have fun with some nearby denizens of shadow who aren't to happy now. Granted he didn't kill it but he did manage to not only quote Futurama but as well relieve the party of quite a large threat and earned the respect of the NE druid. Incidently the party later bought him a bright purple suit and hat, and as well got him a tea set, saying something about a Looking Glass.(if you don't watch futurama you might not get the reference)

My favorite destruction of a BBEG was when my 4th level Fighter/Cleric summoned a Pheonix in 2nd ed to kill him. My DM had a standing rule that if you wanted to pray for something, cleric or not, you could try, but it was a 1% chance the Diety would here you, and a 1% chance that he'd care enough to actually do something. He also let us call low or high before rolling %, just for fun. So we're fighting this demon, and we're losing badly. The group's basically agreed that we need to escape (what the DM wanted) but I decided I was going to give it one more try. So I declare I'm going to roll a prayer, "Please Thor send Something to help us in our struggle." First roll, call high, make the 100! Second roll ,since it's just on a lark anyways, I call low: Roll the 1.

DM just stared at the dice for like 5 minutes, grabbed them, rolled them a few times himself to make sure they weren't fixed, cursed rather loudly, and grabbed the MM. We go for sodas and when we come back he's ready to continue. He points at my character:

DM: "You Explode..."
Me: "What? I made the rolls!"
DM: "...and from your ashes a great Pheonix arises and turns to face the demon."
Other Group Member: "Looks like the wish worked, don't worry, we'll bring you back."
DM: "There isn't enough left to ressurect, start rolling."
Me: "Damnit!"

Also, Dimension Door can be fun if you're lucky enough to have a DM who interprets it as actually being a door you have to step through. Open the portal, and instead of walking through just toss 2 or 3 vials of alchemists fire through and close it. Or open the protal behind the BBEG and shoot an arrow through it. Course, most DMs who interpret it this way also interpret it as being a 2 way portal, so you gotta be careful, but it's fun nonetheless.
