| Ezell Pike05-20-05, 08:38 PM | Giants can't get enough of them. Magical beasts a close second. |
| Koga:The ninja trick05-21-05, 09:11 PM | Abberations, you'll be happy you invested in it later.. |
| Gryllmyre05-21-05, 09:31 PM | I was wondering about evil outsiders but went with aberrations. I've encountered evil outsiders, no aberrations yet. Figures. |
| Meshakhad05-22-05, 05:12 PM | Humans. The most common species you will fight is humans. |
| Colmarr05-22-05, 08:52 PM | It really does depend on the campaign. Different DMs prefer different opponents, and it can even vary from campaign to campaign. In the one I'm currently running, a ranger would be mad not to take Goblinoids as his favourite enemy. They're everywhere... Speak to your DM and ask him for a frank idea of the types of creatures most likely to be encountered in his campaign. |
| Cthulhu113805-22-05, 09:44 PM | Heh heh heh. Favored favored enemies! I usually go with Aberration myself. Just seems natural for the rangers to hate the unnatural. |
| Edymnion05-22-05, 10:10 PM | Just seems natural for the rangers to hate the unnatural.Just as a side note, but a ranger does not have to hate his favored enemy. Thats 2e material. 3e Favored Enemy only means that you have specifically studied how to fight/kill them. There are no penalties to any kind of social interactions with those creatures, no penalties to diplomacy, or any of that. |

Speak to your DM and ask him for a frank idea of the types of creatures most likely to be encountered in his campaign. This is part of why I don't like the favored enemy ability. Mechanically, the ability is almost completely under the control of the DM (unlike spells and feats which let the player choose the time and place). On the other side of the table, DMs may feel forced to either include monsters they didn't really want to use, or scale back on a featured monster to keep the ranger from stealing the show. Flavor-wise, I can see some rangers having a special monster that they've specialized in tracking/fighting/whatnot, but I think rangers should have other alternatives, such as favored terrain or somesuch. |
