| Tharin G'tal02-02-06, 10:59 AM | I was thinking of playing a favoured soul or cleric but dont yet have complete divine, can anyone tell me what the favoured souls spells per day and spells known are like? Are they the same as the sorcerer for example? cheers T |
| kam_Islash02-02-06, 11:01 AM | Pretty much actually. They also get some nifty class abilities :) What level you at? |
| Tharin G'tal02-02-06, 11:06 AM | Gonna be starting at level 7, have read the Favoured Souls with class article and their abilities sound cool but it doesn't say about their spells. |
| Lenarior02-02-06, 11:07 AM | They do cast spells as sorcerers, same with the spells known part, but their spells are divine and the spells temselves are taken from the cleric list. However, if you want to play the class you should read about it it Complete Divine. I've never played one but I've been in the same group as one. I think it's a rather well-balanced class. |
| kam_Islash02-02-06, 11:18 AM | I think its a rather kick-ass class myself. Im not turned on by the word "balance" |
| Tharin G'tal02-02-06, 11:20 AM | Thats cool, cheers for the info guys! |
| moriarty1302-02-06, 01:11 PM | From what I remember it's basically slower spell progression, no domain abilities (or domains), no turn undead, and all to get MAYBE one extra spell per day. Oh, and you get to pick some tiny number of spells known instead of automatically knowing every single divine spell. Oh, also no heavy armor proficiency. It's basically like a cleric, but really bad. |
| Vintus02-02-06, 01:16 PM | They use Charisma for spell level and bonus spells and Wisodm for spell DC |

Well, they also get: energy resistance to 2 types fly speed(at like lvl 15+ somewhere) [edit]Weapon prof, focus, and spec with deity's favored weapon (great flavor) spontaneous casting, which IMHO kicks butt, my clerics never used more than like 4-8 spells at any level anyways. It's better to have a few spells and choose which one is best, than to only have prepared like 1 usefull spell, and the others are deadweight. It's a better class for a combat character than a cleric IMHO, since clerics can only spontaneous cast cure/inflict. If you're a healer primarily, it won't matter much between them. If you want to be the party's swiss-army-knife, play a cleric, make scrolls and potions. |
| Rhomphaia02-02-06, 05:30 PM | I do not have the Complete Divine yet, but I seriously hope the version in that book is not like the one in the Miniatures Handbook. The one in MH is just a little much. Also, if you have access to the Dragonlance campaign setting book, there is a nifty divine casting class called the Mystic you may want to take a look at. |
| The White Sorcerer02-02-06, 07:58 PM | I seriously hope the version in that book is not like the one in the Miniatures Handbook. It's exactly the same. |
| Rhomphaia02-02-06, 09:30 PM | It's exactly the same. Dear lord...I am very sure I prefer the Mystic now. I don't know what it is, but the Favored Soul just seems like a bit much for a class, even a divine class. |
| Rathje02-02-06, 09:33 PM | Favoured Soul is a wonderful class. It has flavour and abilities that differ from similar classes (read: Cleric). Spontaneous casting plus more spells per day makes it a better healer than Cleric (except that they gain new spell levels one level later). I find them slightly better in combat, simply because of automatic proficiency with deity's favoured weapon. They lose out on domains and turning. Domains can be pretty nice, but not huge. Turning by itself is acceptable, but Complete Divine has feats that allow you to use Turn Undead attempts to do extra things, so that gives Cleric bonus points. Personally, I like Favoured Soul. I don't know how new to D&D you are, but I would recommend Favoured Soul to a newer player, just as I would recommend Sorceror over Wizard. Spontaneous casting is easier in such situations. Plus, regardless of experience as a player, it's nice to have the option of healing without preparing your spell slots (only arguable over an evil cleric, though). |
| Vaelan02-03-06, 12:26 AM | The Favored Soul gets seventeen more spells known than a Sorcerer and their spells/day are the same. |
| Cadfan02-03-06, 01:07 AM | Spontaneous casting is also very nice for a divine caster, because it gives you all the benefits of spontaneous casting, except more so in that you can apply it to things like Lesser Restoration or Cure Blindness. |
