Fear me! -- A question on frightful presence [Archive] - Wizards Community

We are trying to resolve and issue and cannot find the answer. Are half-dragons immune to a true dragon's frightful presence?

MM3.5 states, "Dragons ignore the frightful presence of other dragons." It does not clearly state if these means all dragon types or only true dragon.

But do half dragons have the dragon type or subtype? If they do that would probably make them immune.

I'd have to agree with that ruling. A dragon is only a dragon if its type or subtype is dragon. It doesn't matter if it is called such and such dragon, all that matters (as far as the rules are concerned) is that it's subtype is dragon.

That said, the Half-Dragon template DOES change the base creatures type to dragon and as such they would be immune to frightful presence.

Also from the context earlier in the explination of the True Dragon it distiguishes between them. This is the arguement currently that we are trying to work out.

12-08-06, 05:14 PM That is indeed the other way of interpreting the text.
A feat from either races of the dragon or the draconomicon pops into my head right now. "Awaken frightful presence" which gives exaclty what the name suggests, a frightful presence ability. One of its prereq's is IIRC "Dragon type". Keeping that in mind I'd say that creatures with the dragon type are indees immune.

But then that begs the question: What IS a dragon?

The most sensible ruling would be that a dragon is any creature with the dragon type.
