A friend has just gotten back from Iraq and is going to DM a campaign of unknown length. I just don't know if I should play a fighter or caster?

So far the party is ( 7th level )
1) rouge pixie ( my wife and her first campaign)
2) A standard Assimer cleric ( has played for a few years )
3) A halfing druid who sometimes kills/eats tall ( 6ft+) people. ( a good roleplayer who tends to get fixated, but it keeps him in character )
4) ??? ( Me, I have played lots of DND but this is my first 3.5 campaign )

It seems like we need a fighter or some raw muscle, but some arcane power might be good too. I don't know much about the campaign other then no Evil characters. But knowing the DM the campaign will be standard magic levels, so scrolls and potions will be accessible so long as we are near a major urban enviroment ( which is likely ). Also no pscionics of any sort.
The books I have access to is huge BUT I can only use a couple non-core books and 1 or 2 xeroxs. So I can use ANY books I want but not EVERY book.

So I have a few character ideas.
a) Paladin who is VERY strict, and sees no shades of gray.
b) a small ( halfling/gnome ) barbarian.
c) gadget guy ( artificer ).
d) some sort of jeckle and hyde character ( alter self could be tons of fun ) Drinks a potion to turn into ogre-like, or something anything else big and angry.

Right now I am leaning towards the barbarian or the jeckle/hyde.

It has been a few years since I last played (except two months ago a friend of a friend ran a one shot adventure, it was 3.5).

Well, the Halfling barb would be fun to play. You get extra AC for being small and to have more dex, more skills, bonus to saves etc. but 10 ft less speed (youll be as fast as a human because of barb's fast movement) but you get less damage from weapons and -1 to str modifier (1 point less damage). you still can get good Con and fantastic dex, which are most important abilities for barbs.

The arcane caster isnt nessesary, Cleric and Druid will do great for spellcasting part, if the rogue maxes out use magic device, that'll do another "spellcaster"

Let's see ...
a> completely incompatible with the cannibal halfling.
b> covers your group's lack of a melee beatstick.
c> Always useful provided your DM gives you time to craft
d> Would require some significant input from the DM to balance.

I'd go with the Barbarian or the Artificer.

For the jeckle/hyde I was thinking of using potions of alter self/polymorph (perhaps cursed or addictive in someway) but your right, I don't think I will have time to do enough looking through books and talk to the DM enough before the campaign begins.

But I was mainly leaning towards the barbarian or the artificer. Those seem like the most fun at the moment. Also I don't care if I am a halfling barbarian I just wanted a small barbarian. Although halfling would be the easyiest to fit in right now.

A Changeling Warshaper makes a good Jeckle/Hyde type. Normally, you're the perfect gentleman, but when you get angry you can shift into a mass of claws, tentacles, and teeth. Maybe go with Barbarian to get into Warshaper, so you can rage when you go Hyde.

Possibly Barbarian 4/Warshaper 3 for a pure combat type, or Bard 1/Barbarian 4/Warshaper 2 if you want more social skills as Jeckle (take Able Learner if possible).

Artificer is a bit too dependent on the magic items that you DM can take away. If you want a fighter or a caster, you may want to try a combination (Eldritch Knight, Duskblade, etc.) of the two. Alternatively, a Swordsage (Tome of Battle) makes for a good combination of melee and some ranged firepower. What do you want out of a caster?
