i know alot of people say that high level fighters arent very good and stuff but im just wondering if there are any prestige classes to go for as a fighter, im about to start a [hopfully] long lasting campaign and want to play a fighter, but i dont want to be usless later in the game, so if there are any prestige classes to aim for, ill go for 'em

Fighters are not useless in 3.0 or 3.5, they are combat feat monsters!
With high strength and constitution and a load of combat feats, they can reap through a lot!

Prestige class decisions depends on your taste and ambition of what you wish for it to become. Plain fighters are powerful.
Need to explain more on what you are looking to become.

Well there's this cool book they realeased called "The Complete Warrior" which if I'm not mistaken, is page after page of Fighter geared goodness, available at a bookstore near you :ayyyy!:

The power level of the classes isnt really meant to be compared on an individual level. The whole encounter level and exp system is based upon a adventuring party, four player characters.

Fighters are weak at range. Wizards are weak up close. Put a fighter in front of a wizard and you get the best of both. Blast everything at a distance, and slice and dice everything you can smell.
Sandwich a cleric or druid in the middle and the combo becomes virtually unkillable with healing and buff spells and back up melee and/or ranged spells.
Then all you need is a fixer. Find this, avoid that, open here, get that. What party can do with out a rogue? Stab in the back on a monster while its attention is on the fighter, or hiding in the shadows raining missiles upon the enemies.

If you are planning a long running campaign, then don't look at the individual power of your character. look at how your character will increase the parties power. Successful adventurers are a team.

I don't know how you can consider a composite-longbow-wielding Fighter with the appropriate feats "weak at range". Long-range spells are what, 400'+20' per level? So 800 feet max at 20th level? While the longbow in question is capable of over 1000 feet from level 1 (albeit horribly inaccurately at that level)?

Add that the Fighter can fire 4 arrows a round at higher levels, and can use bows with all kinds of nice enhancements to add to their damage, and I really don't see how they're "weak" at range. If I had to say any class was "weak" at range it would be a Rogue, because they have no casting, and their best damage-booster (sneak attack) only works within 30 feet.

Though, as mentioned, Fighter PrCs are a dime a dozen. The CW has oodles, and is a good buy if you play characters, not necessarily just fighters, who get into combat a lot. There's also usually a few in pretty much any supplement with PrCs.

thanks you replyers

Son of Khoron-the ambition of what i want my character to become is purely a warhorse. rush in, hack-slash-kill, leave, not looking for too many new special abilities, im looking for somthing to just boost my str and con mostly

Obscure One-yeah yeah, i know about the CW book, but im looking for players opinions on what to go for

Asmodeous-like a said before, i want to be the rush in and kill beast, simple as that

Thorak- tru tru, a fighter can use bows very nicely, and wizards have touchspells, but most of the time it seems that fighters in melee are more effective than at ranged, just like wizards at ranged rather then at melee

Given you want to be a melee monster, you may want to consider playing a barbarian. They aren't as versatile as a Fighter is, but if all you want to do is cut a swathe of destruction in Melee they are the best class for it.

That said, if you want to use that composite strength longbow or lead your buddies in a cavalry charge, I'd use a fighter.

The truth is that almost all the Prestige Classes are easy for a fighter to get.

But you have to have been planning to get it, taking the various feat for the Prestige Classes.

With everyone claiming fighters are the weakest class at high levels it goes to say that only a "roleplayer" would choose them.

Roleplayers dont have to play weak characters. My current character is on the path to Wiz5/Incan10/Archmage5, not weak at all, and I have 7 pages of info on this guy...

On another note, I would suggest picking up Complete Warrior, its got ton's of fighter related data (imagon that, its called Complete Warrior).
