Fighting a Taresque, what do you think of this plan [Archive] - Wizards Community

So ive been thinking how to fight this beast and well i cant really take many hits from it.... but i know it wants to eat me so i figure go with the flow, ive stocked up on protection from acid potions and im going to let it eat me, once inside the belly of the beasy i figure hack away, the crush damage should be less than anythign outside, and it will be easier to hit form inside as well.

what do you all think? i figure with the rest of the group pounding away from the outside we might be able to take it down fairly quickly

Can you take 2d8+8 per round? And hit 20+ AC consistantly? If so, that might be a good plan. Bring a friend, and do twice as much damage. You'll (and I'm talking about the group as a whole here) need to be able to deal 50+ damage EVERY round, otherwise you aren't making ANY progress. 60 damage a round would mean 43 rounds of fighting. Deal less than that, and you are backpedaling. If you aren't using Epic weapons, then you might also have to deal with DR, but I am not sure about the rules on Epic DR and regular powerful weapons. Your casters will probably have a tough time getting spells to stick, and some wont affect it at all, regardless.

And then, once it's down, you have to finish it, which I assume you know how to do. If not, you are in trouble.

Personally, I say just hit it with an instant-kill spell until it fails the save and then use Wish. It's quicker and all you have to do is keep out of reach. For that matter, what's even easier is to convince a dragon to do it for you.

Depending on how your DM rules Imprisonment (they're not really dead) You can off a tarrasque pretty easily. Limited Wish + Well built wizard around Imprisonment will get rid of the tarrasque.

I had a DM one-shot a Tarrasque encounter, and was fairly dissapointed in a 3 round battle. He should have known - my wizard's name was "gimpy"

As far as Damage goes I can dish out plenty from inside the Taresque, I will only miss hitting the AC 20 on natural ones, so i shoulf deal in an average round 10d10 +115 thats accounting for the average criticals and and average misses. add to that the damage that my other companions could dish out and it may finish it off quick. We can also get through the DR.

Of course Fly might just be a better way to go...... I may try that if it seems the fighting from the inside isn't working well.

03-03-04, 02:56 PM
Well, its better to you if you're a monk or you're using a light weapon to dish that amount of damage ok? Swallowed creatures are considered grappled (so no long weapons) but the creature that swallowed you is not considered grappled. Just an advice ok?

There IS an easier solution. Circle of teleportation. Cast to teleport say, 100 feet above circle. Teleport, fall, teleport, fall, teleport, fall. And, you can shoot spells and arrows at it at the same time! Whoo hoo!
BrianMc223

03-03-04, 04:44 PM
The only problem with the teleportation circle is that he won't ever hit.............

No DM should have allowed any plan that allows someone to beat a Tarrasque in 3 rounds. A Wish spell for instance perverts the intent of anything beyond the laid down uses of the spell.

And Imprisonment could work if you get past the Willpower save which I can guarantee you wont.

2) reverse gravity

I Had a player try and do this once. Bear in mind not your plan but a load of others. he would look at the Tarrasque eagerly night after night and comb over his spells so one day his wizard could organize a attack and kill it.

here is why his plan was doomed to Failure. When you go and use out of game knowledge by looking at the Monstrous Manual and metagaming ways to defeat the creature by looking at its AC, how much damage it does ect..if you use any out of game knowledge to formulate your plans. Your Cheating! Thats right, you are a cheater and your leaving the spirit of the game behind. In a sense also your a coward since you cant try and find an in game way to do this.

When a player cheats in this manner in my games I find im well within my power now to change things to even the playing field once again.

Imagine The wizards surprise when he encountered the beast only to find that this particular version had been sealed off by a god. I thought that would stop him and maybe make him rethink waking it up. But alas no. he found a powerful Cleric to help him break the seal (which at this point I let him do for a price of powerful help) and enter the lair. He got a big surprise when he found out the reason it had been sealed by a god was that this Tarrasque was a Paragon half-fiendish Tarrasque !!! The creature woke up upon the seal being broken (lots of magic release and noise) and then proceeded to destroy thr wizard and the evil cleric helping him quite quickly.

Now with a Paragon Tarrasque on the loose the campaign cvontinues. The Wizard is dead permanently. His friends refused to get him raised now thinking him the ultimate troublemaker. Also because as the world is slowly destroyed by this unstoppable fiendish abomination the survivors of initial attacks who had tried to stop the wizard from waking the beast up (with hired adventurers and mercanaries no less..who failed) now blame the remamaing party members for the state of things. Now they are wanted fugitives.

The Moral? Cheating gets you no where fast and in the end you only end up cheating yourself.

Oh and for those of you scratching their heads over it. The Paragon is a template in the Epic Level Handbook that is quite nasty and one id never use except to prove a point.

Very true. But limited wish lists giving a creature a -7 to its next saving throw as one of the powers it can do without dm intervention. Without a great deal of effort a wizard/sorcerer can get his save DC above 30 for 9th level spells. The tarrasque norrmally has a +20 to its will save, so depending no how well built the wizard is, you can easily get a dc that requires a roll in the 18-20 range to beat.

Even with a +13 to save hitting a 18-20 isnt hard.

The DM have for in game reasons given us tons of information on the Tarresque, we ahve been asked to defeat it by a powerful cleric friend who is now dying and when he dies thw Tarresque will be released, this cleric has told us how powerful the beast is and having been swallowed by several creatures i know for a fact that against a monster that can hit me at will, i am likely to take less damage inside the beast than i am going to take outside. I have discussed this plan with my Dm in a fair amount of detail and he does not think I am metagaming at all by planning to allow it to swallow me, hell the first thing he told us was that this beast eats everythign it can.

As far as easier to hit in the stomach.... well of course it is, what isn't easier to hit in the stomach? no scales and it sure as hell cant dodge.

I really dont see how this qualifys as cheating.
Noel

Temporal stasis on the powerful cleric, have the beast sleep forever, afterall the cleric will die otherwise. All you need to do is find a 15th level mage/sorcerer willing to cast the spell.

Shouldn't be too hard at a decent level. 16+ Fighter with two light weapons with a few +'s and even a single Elemental property would do the trick. 1d4+1d6 at 5 attacks a round can give you, roughly, your 10d10. A good, well buffed strength score, 5 attacks at +3 or so enchantment (Possibly more if someone spares a GMW) can make up an easy +50 damage. 24 Strength, and +3 To Hit on the daggers with Power Attack can cut even for another 50 points of damage, with Greater Specialization adding another 20, and you've already surpassed +115.

Average damage output of 10d10 is 55. We'd have to be talking two +5 elemental daggers to equal that.

Monk lvl 20, 5 attacks/round with flurry: 10d10 dmg.
115/5 = 23

Now, assuming 16 str base +6 from items gives a 22 or +6 mod
Amulet of mighty fists or any of the several alternatives nets another +5 damage; Greater Magic Fang does the same.

Power attack can easily add another 5-10 damage; assuming 10 we're at +21 damage per attack.

Remember, this is without any buffs; Polymorph, Haste or any of the other buffs will skyrocket his STR and damage even more; just making him Large will turn the 10d10 into 20d8
(Note Enlarge Person will not work since he's not humanoid anymore due to Perfect Self, unless he had it Permanency'd on him before)
Weapon enchantments (such as may be added through an amulet of mighty fists or, for example, Bracers of the Blinding Strike), and multiclass cheese will boost the damage output easily far higher.

03-04-04, 06:10 AM
Yeah well wielding two katanas (twin weapon fighting feat allows two same sized weapons to be used, came from some book i forget which) I have a 26 strength, weapon specialization, and both blades are +5 of speed (my DM houseruled that two weapons of speed allow one extra attack each) thats a total of 9 attacks per round for a level 21 ranger/fighter/custom PrC

so accounting for improved critical 17-20 threat range with 9 attacks i should get almost 2 crits a round and over conservative say one crit miss a round thats 10 hits a round.

From the SRD:

A swallowed creature is considered to be grappled, while the creature that did the swallowing is not.

Attack Your Opponent: You can make an attack with an unarmed strike, natural weapon, or light weapon against another character you are grappling. You take a –4 penalty on such attacks.

Looks like using katana's in the big T's stomach is out... sorry

The monk example above was just to illustrate that it isn't that hard to reach that amount of damage.
Sir_Jack_Sparrow

What if your wearing a ring of freedom of movement? would you still be considered grappled int he stomach of a tarresque?

and being grappled means you may only use small weapons right? but it dosent seemt hat far a stretch that the stomach of somethign so big could allow slightly larger weapons :) either way im going to have to try it and see what happens i guess.

That's 3.0. 3.5 changed it to -10.

From the SRD:

Regeneration (Ex): No form of attack deals lethal damage to the tarrasque. The tarrasque regenerates even if it fails a saving throw against a disintegrate spell or a death effect. If the tarrasque fails its save against a spell or effect that would kill it instantly (such as those mentioned above), the spell or effect instead deals nonlethal damage equal to the creature’s full normal hit points +10 (or 868 hp). The tarrasque is immune to effects that produce incurable or bleeding wounds, such as mummy rot, a sword with the wounding special ability, or a clay golem’s cursed wound ability.
The tarrasque can be slain only by raising its nonlethal damage total to its full normal hit points +10 (or 868 hit points) and using a wish or miracle spell to keep it dead.

From the SRD
The subject [of the Freedom of Movement spell]automatically succeeds on any grapple check made to resist a grapple attempt, as well as on grapple checks or Escape Artist checks made to escape a grapple or a pin.

So I guess you just shoot out of his mouth like a greased piglet. Disturbing.

Not sure if it would work but you could flesh to stone it. If you aren't satisfied with it being just inert, then you could have several dwarvish stonemasons apply themselves to it then stone to flesh then wish to make it dead.

Easily done if he's getting a GMW from some friendly source, though the average damage output isn't that important. We are talking about Nearly Epic or Epic levels, to be fighting the Terasque of course. There are dozens of ways to get similar damage.

The problem with D&D is that there are no level 20 spells. Muridin's Tactical Nuke Ahh, I can see it now.

One way to do it that might require the sacrifice of one PC is to have the PC get swallowed and chug a lot of enlarge potions. That wouldn't be pretty.

Now, I haven't really looked at the terrasque since 2e, but why kill the thing? Wouldn't it be -far- more useful to somehow make some use of such an incredible resource?

With it's regeneration, you could:

1) Turn it into a sheep to get free and infinite wool and meat!
2) Turn it into a gnome and use it for dangerous carnival stunts!

Or given it's size and uniqueness.

3) Turn it into stone to get your very own unique tourist attraction!
4) Turn it into stone and sell 'Terrasque Pieces'! Have your very own!

Now granted... one wiseacre with greater dispelling would ruin your business model, but you could always give him a collar of counterspelling with a dispel in it.

From the SRD
Special: If you attack with a two-handed weapon, or with a one-handed weapon wielded in two hands, instead add twice the number subtracted from your attack rolls. You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks.

well,

If it was a desperate situation and the tarasque needed killing, a very valorous and noble character could do the following:

protection from acid spell, get eaten....

and you've brought a bag of holding and a handy haversack with you....

do the proper insertion....

I don't know too many things that could survive a spacial and temporal incursion in its gut

at the very least you've banished the tarasque to another plane.

Get some huge boulders. and cast stone to flesh on them to make a great big pile of meat. Stick a gem prepared with trap the soul in one of the chunks of meat. Put it in front of the Tarrasque. It will eat the gem. No save, no SR, it's gone. No 5000 xp for a wish, either.

03-06-04, 06:04 PM
If you are climbing inside it, consider the Hammerblock armor property from CW in addition to acid resistance, it's DR 5 against bludgeoning damage. If your armor is already at max capacity, put it on a +1 buckler.

For spells, have the wizard cast Enlarge Person so you'll be able to use your katanas (although at -2 to hit) while inside it, have the cleric or druid cast an extended Regenerate Critical Wounds on you beforehand since the hammerblock won't prevent all the stomach damage, not to mention the initial bite damage you'll take jumping down its throat. Finally, get the Magical Beast Bane property on your weapons to let you penetrate its DR, either by adding it normally or using the Bladebane spell from UE, also extended if possible.

Assuming you have a round or two in order to get ready, all you have to do is make like an appetizer and hop down its throat. You'll only be taking 2d8-1 points of bludgeoning damage per round, and for the next 6 minutes or so you'll be able to bypass its DR and deal more damage per round than it can regenerate. Assuming your DM doesn't want the Tarrasque to win, you could probably take it down to -10 solo. And of course, seeing as how your DM lets you wield two one-handed weapons without penalty and use custom PrCs, I think he'll be on your side instead of the big T's.

All right, smart guy. What's the Tarrasque's name, which must be written upon the gem?

From the SRD
Trigger Object: The second method is far more insidious, for it tricks the subject into accepting a trigger object inscribed with the final spell word, automatically placing the creature’s soul in the trap. To use this method, both the creature’s name and the trigger word must be inscribed on the trigger object when the gem is enspelled.

Fun spell to use on Big T. is Maze. No saving throws and with a -4 int it could never beat the DC 20 int check to get out of the Maze. So if your finding yourself getting pretty hurt have mr. magic man Maze the damn thing and heal for the 10 minutes Big T. goes rompping around the Maze.

Also flesh to stone could work, I don't know if it's immune to it cause I'm too lazy to look at the Monster Manual, just have to beat that Fort Save.

... The tarrasque regenerates even if it fails a saving throw against a disintegrate spell or a death effect. If the tarrasque fails it's save against a spell or effect that would kill it instantly, the spell or effect insteat deals nonlethal damage equal to the creature's full normal hit points +10...

If i where the dm I'd rule that all the imprisonment spells and banishment and all the other one shot one kill spells count as instant death spells for this perpuse. Which means you can still take out big T with a lucky save. But it's not likely.

we tried the swallow tactic.... that enver worked, DM said i needed to make a concentration check for each atack i wanted to make inside the monster cause of the damage i was taking. so the wizard kindly got swallowed and got em out of there.

We were stuck, had no idea what to do, then the wizard casts ottos irrestiable dance, it went through and the beast danced, in those 3 rounds i did several hundred points of damamge, and only took one round of attack from the beast before i put it down. my last round of attack did 351 damage i guess epic characters are epic for a reason huh?

anyway it turned out to be not too bad of a fight.

Your DM screwed a perfectly valid tactic then, Sir_Jack_Sparrow. The tarrasque is so one-dimensional (mega-melee-machine) that pretty much any other tactic will take it down.

One thing no one's mentioned is flight - Big T's a groundthumper. Stick a spell of flying on a good archer, and have him rain death on Big T. It'll work quite quickly, especially if the wizard's on hand to buff him up (GMW on the arrows, GMW on the bow, equals +10 attack/damage!), or if the archer multiclassed into sorcerer for True Strike.

edit: Anthor beat me to the flight idea. Good job. :)

Level 8 i believe.

I should mention there are some splat books, and one custom prestige class in out campaign, that helped us quite a bit in the fight and it gave me the few extra attacks i needed to beat Mr T down fast :) his dancing was quite the sight to see too i would imagine.

My DM said that since i was taking continuious damage form acid and crushing in the stomach of the beast that i would need to make a concentration check in order to attack, and it would ahve to be a concentration check for each swing of the sword.

is this wrong? i never checked the books to confirm, but he said thats what the books said.

If I remember right, only things which provoke attacks of opportunity can have concentration checks. I know for a fact that attacking in big T's belly doesn't force those checks:

Swallow Whole (Ex): The tarrasque can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Huge or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d8+8 points of crushing damage plus 2d8+6 points of acid damage per round from the tarrasque’s digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 50 points of damage to the tarrasque’s digestive tract (AC 25). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. The tarrasque’s gullet can hold 2 Huge, 8 Large, 32 Medium, 128 Small, or 512 Tiny or smaller creatures.

There's no provision for Concentration checks anywhere in there. Your DM was very much wrong.

It appears that your DM is using RULE 0. I can understand the use of a concentration check inside the belly of Big T. I don't condemn your DM for it.

On the topic of all the 1-3 round Big T kills, where's the fun in that? I'd much rather have a well prepared group of characters ( a good mix of fighters/casters) meet Big T head on, in an epic battle that'd last several minutes.

where is the fun in dying, the group had a wizard, a mystic thurge, and me a ranger/fighter. the mystic thurge could not get through SR since none of his levels were really high enough, and the wiaard does not specialize in damage, it was pretty much up to me to deal out the smack load of damage, then the wizard was going to wish it to stay dead.

As far as the concentration check goes, my DM wasent so much using rule zero, as he was misintepreting the rules, cause he usually tells us when he does that, and cause really i think its just mean to rule zero that a brilliant plan like that wont work, In my experience the thing that makes D&D so fun sometimes is the rewards you get for comming up with innovative and interesting plans.

but a dead tarrasque, imagine the possibilities

hmm, with epic magic, could you go for a vampire tarrasque?

that would suck for the PCs

1. Acquire two scrolls of Teleport Without Error, a bag of holding, and a portable hole
2. Find the tarrasque
3. Teleport into the Tarrasque, or get eaten
4. Insert bag of holding into portable hole and throw down its throat
5. Teleport Out.
6. Run like mad, and have someone cast Wish

My Favorite Trick:

1. buy immovable rods made of adamantium (sp?)
2. Climb in tarsques body
3. Activate imovable rods
4. teleport out
5. Target with instant kill spells till dead.

I'm pretty sure the Tarrasque would be able to easily make the Strength check required to move the rods... not that I've ever actually used that thing in my games.

Yes, while the immovable rods are an interesting idea, it would never work effectively, or even not at all. The Tarrasque has a STR of 45 which gives it a +17 to it's STR check in which the immovable rod requires a 30 to move it (not very fast or far) so the Tarrasque would have more than a 50% chance of moving it, however, the immovable rod will only support up to 8,000 Lbs. before giving way. Herein lies the problem. The Tarrasque weighs (at a minimum) 250,000 Lbs. Pretty tasty snack I'd say, but nothing more.

As far as the Adamantine, I'm not sure what that would add to the effectiveness for the Immovabale Rod. Except make it harder to break, which is a moot point in this scenario since the Tarrasque wouldn't even have to bother breaking it, since the Rod couldn't resist the Tarrasque's weight anyway.

Or you could just give the tarresque some intelligence enhancing items, it's not inheritly evil so he'll probably be really grateful.

I made a 40th level monk character that took out the tarrasque singlehandedly in about 5 rounds of continued pounding (this was 3e, btw). He did it by virtue of getting around his DR, sheer damage output, and having a ring of three wishes.

If brute force doesn't work, it means you didn't use enough.

Anyway, if I were DMing the whole plate-mail-suppository thing, I'd have the Tarrasque make a DC 12 intelligence check each round. If it made it, it would realize you're bad for it, and vomit you back up as a full round action next round.

The easiest tactic in 3.0 is still Miasma.
This spell is so broken, a lvl 15 druid alone has a good chance to kill T alone.

This thread has been going on a while, and I see the combat in question was already resolved in game between the GM and the player who initially posted, but I am gonna throw a quick two cents in...

The two glaring things that were overlooked with being intentionally swallowed were - you cant dual weild those epic weapons while being grappled, even if both weapons are light (PHB per grappling rules 3.5)....

Second, your completely ignoring being pinned once your inside and being grappled....with its tremendous bonus to grapple (+81 I think, but I dont have it handy) - your gonna lose that check, and be held immobile (but not helpless) and sit there and take constriction and acid damage every round....so one round after he wins his grapple with you in the stomach, your not doing any further damage....

Some of the other suggestions for killing him have flaws as well, but my relief shift just showed up and I am going to bed.

Thanks,

I.Q.

sadly you can't kill it from inside the only thing you can do is try to escape to the outside. personly i think it should have a higher challenge rating because it has fast healing 40 and is almost invincible to magic and has high saves. however psionics would be good against it

Hmm. Actually, magic could work. Depending on the char. With something like otto's, you would have three turns for something like dom monster. I'm an MF junky, so I would mind blast a lot for more time. Slice off horn, THEN use dom monster. Of course, that may not work. I would personally use the aforementioned trap the soul. Or just Wish that T was your willing, competent slave forever. Then learn how to ride it.

I suppose if you're really gung ho about it, once it swallows you you could just try and hack your way into the aorta, or one of its arteries. From there you could just start plugging it up with bacon fat.

Or you can just slice up its heart right when you get to it or you can escape by going though his intestines and out though the south exit however this would be a c:censored: :censored: :censored:y idea.

Exactly. He is effectively imprisoned, but you can keep bashing him with spells and arrows. Just keep bashing him with spells and he's a goner.

Flying moose: you do know that even human body acid can digest metal, right? if 2d6 points of acid can't digest plate male over a ccouple hours of time, not much else will.

My tarrsque fighting strategy: use spells or anything you can think of to create a pit 300ish' deep and 80' wide. Use illusions (preferably high level ones) to make it look safe. Lure the tarrasque into the pit. When he's safely in, use a bunch of alls of force to cage him in. Then pelt him with spells.

Or get a hulking hurler
