fighting with two weapons [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-12-04, 02:25 AM Question: fighting with two weapons and the extra attack.

Ok I Have a lvl 7 ranger with a base attack of +10/+5
Know after adding my two weapons it add up to +9/+7
This part it right but which weapon gets the extra attack and how much is it?
For future reference can some one plz tell me were this is in a players handbook?

01-12-04, 02:33 AM You need to decide which weapon is in your off-hand. That's the weapon which receives the extra attack.

The extra attack occurs at your full Base Attack Bonus, minus the penalties for dual-wielding (which in most cases, if you're using the right combination of weapons, is -2/-2).

Thus, with your current setup, you'd have a total of three attacks per round at +9/+7/+9.

01-12-04, 01:13 PM Your numbers are a bit confusing, but let me try to get this right:

As a 7th level ranger you have a base attack bonus of +7/+2.

You have other modifiers that give you a total of +3 to hit, giving you 2 attacks with your mainhand at +10/+5.

As a 7th level ranger you have two weapon fighting and improved two weapon fighting.

With two weapon fighting and a normal attack of +10/+5 you would make those attacks at -2, plus an additional attack at your highest modifier -2 with your offhand:

Mainhand +8/+3
Offhand +8

Improved two weapon fighting gives you another attack with your offhand at -5 over the first one, giving you attacks that look like this:

Mainhand +8/+3
Offhand +8/+3

You have 4 total attacks.

I assumed a few things for this:

1. That you took two weapon fighting as your ranger combat style.

2. That your additional attack modifier of +3 applied equally to your offhand. Meaning if it was +2 from strength and +1 from a masterwork weapon that you also were wielding a masterwork weapon in your offhand. If this isn't the case then adjust accordingly.

01-12-04, 01:20 PM Which hand you determine is your offhand is up to you. Remember that you receive additional penalties to hit (another -2/-2) if your offhand weapon is not a light weapon (as per the PHB weapon chart in the equipment section), and that you only receive half (round damage) your strength modifier to damage with that weapon (still use your full strength for your bonus to hit though).

Most of two weapon fighting is covered in special attacks section of the combat chapter of the PHB, it is close to the end as the special attacks section is in alphabetical order and two weapon fighting starts with a T.
