I'm just starting as a player and have decided that I want to eventually become a duelist. So far, Rouge, ranger or Sorceror sound like my best choices right now, and my favorite races are Drow and Tiefling. It doesn't have to fit all the standards (just as long as I get to be a duelist with a rapier), but can you advise me on what character to make for a new group to DND?

My top choice right now is to be a Sorcerror/Duelist but I don't know what would be a good race to compliment that class.

Try the optimization boards on making your character. People there can help more than here. Search under duelist threads to find the duelist builds you want to try. There will be level by level instructions with end results of character creation.

If all else fails take the three classes and index cards masking a list of the requirements for duelist. See how you can fullfill those requirements the fastest and go with that class towards the PrC.

If you like taking advantage of your oponent then rouge/duelist maybe for you. Utility spells like truestrike from sorceror levels would be more your style, or specific enemies are your aim try ranger.

Most of all be specific with the goals for the character. Obviously there is a reason he is a sorceror and what he intended to do becoming a duelist.

A good race would be either of the two you mentioned, human and elf are also good choices. If you like evil races try half fiend, death from above and combat flying enemies with meele rapiers ^^

Take a look at the Swashbuckler (Complete Adventurer I believe, otherwise Complete Warrior) class. ;)

I can't help you on race, but I can toss some class ideas:

For the duelist, try going rogue, and throw your highest scores into DEX and INT. DEX is obvious, allowing you a higher unarmored AC and the use of Weapon Finesse on your rapier. But a rogue's wide variety of class skills can also take full advantage of that high INT, and a duelist eventually gets to add it to AC. Furthermore, you'll want to meet the 13 INT prerequisite for the Combat Expertise feat so you can get Improved Feint. This lets you use your Bluff ranks from rogue to feint as a move action against an enemy, denying them their DEX, and allowing you to combine Sneak Attack damage with the Precise Strike damage on your attack.

I would recommend limiting yourself to the rogue/duelist, but if you feel the urge for some combat spellcasting, consider dropping both and trying the eldritch knight prestige class, or the elven bladesinger (don't remember what book it's in). And if you absolutely must be a duelist/spellcaster, then forget sorcerer and go with wizard. Not only is it easier to explain that you're researching magic rather than innately born with it, but you already have that high INT to take advantage of. Furthermore, if you're elven (a good choice because of the +DEX bonus), the wizard is your preferred multiclassing option anyway.

Hope that helps!
