This is my first time playing an dwarf artificer and we are going into the world's largest dungeon. The stats I rolled are 18, 18, 17, 14, 13, 12 and I haven't assigned them yet. Anyone who has played an artificer wanna give me some guidance on where to put stats and what I should be looking to do each level, what are the important things I need to take advantage of to be effective?

I am also open to changing my race but the new race needs to have darkvision and no level adjustment.

Thanks in advance for your time.

ok, see if they'll let you utilize Gold Dwarf, -2 Dex, +2 Con. Put one 18 in Charisma, the 17 in Intelligence. If you want a decent dex, go ahead and put the other 18 in dex. you could say screw Dex(and just wear the best armor you can afford and use a shield) and put your 14 in there, and put the 18 in Constitution, for a nice fat 20. 11 hp at first level for an artificer would be quite good. Strength and Wisdom are dump stats, put the 13 in strength so you can carry more, you have a decent will save, plus dwarven save bonuses. Decide whether your gonna be a crossbow user or a wand user. PUMP the HECK out of Use Magic Device, and maybe(though some feel this is a waste of a feat) Skill Focus(UMD) as your first level feat. With this, you'd have a very good 4+4+2=11 UMD modifier at first level, with a +2 when using scrolls. Anyway, I'm sure others have even better advice, but if you wanted to stay dwarf, thats how I would go.

Here's a guide I found useful. The Unofficial Artificers Guide (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=813665)

Ratslinky has what you want. That guide will be alot of help. Also,

Str-14
Dex-18
Con-17
Wis-12
Int-18
Cha-13

Cha isn't as important as the book says.

Yeah. Cha should be your second most important stat, after Int. Put your two 18's in Cha and Int.

And I don't think Skill Focus (UMD) is a wasted feat! Escpecially at lower levels. As an artificer everything you do, EVERYTHING, requires UMD. From crafting, to using the items you've made, to emulating spells for your infusions.

Hold on a second and let me fix this.

Str-13
Dex-18-2 16
Con-14+2 16
Wis-12
Int-17
Cha-18

Charisma is more important then the book says. UMD is everything to an Artificer. And just because you are a caster doesn't mean you need to focus on your caster stat of int. Also Skill Focus UMD at first is great and don't forget when you get bonus feat to take the Artisan Feats. Craft Construct can be fun at high levels if you get access to what you need.

Whats going to be your problem is the setting. You picked a Class that requires time to pass in game to make items. Find out how your DM is going to handle it otherwise you might end up the weakest member of the party instead of one of the Strongest.

From what i've heard an Artifice rmay not be the best class to play in WLD. It sounds like a campaign with little downtime and the Artificer is a class that needs downtime to get the most out of your abilities. It can still work but i would focus more on buffing rather than creatiion. And i recommend the Artificer guide that was posted earlier, lots of good ideas in there

personally, i think that skill focus (UMD) is not the best choice. especially as a level 1 character. there are too many other useful feats that you need to get early like extend spell, persistent spell, legendary artisan, extraordinary artisan, quicken spell, TWF, etc

even with the feat, your UMD check is going to be pretty low. you most likely wont be crafting much stuff at levels one and two, because your check isnt going to be high enough to hit the DCs on only one try. youd be much better off using your craft reserve to cast spell storing infusion instead.

the feat is just not helpful at higher levels, and you will regret taking it. try to convince your DM to let you craft a +5 UMD custom item as your first crafted item.

also, regarding downtime, this is easily solved by crafting a Dedicated Wright (Humonculous), and letting him work on your items while the party sleeps. when you can afford it, get a portable hole, and just stick him in there. you get humonculi at 4th, which is all the better reason to wait to craft things until around that time
