:uh-huh:

Okay, two things.

1) Unless you're using some weird feat or class feature out of a book I'm not familiar with, you can't flank with a ranged weapon because you don't threaten with a ranged weapon. By default, flanking is for melee attacks only.

2) What the hell would a naked fencer fence with that wouldn't get this thread sent to the Manure Board?

As for the improving flanking opportunities thing, I find that being a werebear warshaper in hybrid form (15' reach without using reach weapons, 40' wide threatened space) helps a lot. :smirk:

Rogue with spiked chain :D

Best flanking possibilities I have seen actualy used in a game yet.

Of course, many dont like the spiked chain, but I have never seen a game unbalanced just because of one.

In the players handbook it says:
FLANKING
When making a melee attack, you get a +2 flanking bonus if your
opponent is threatened by a character or creature friendly to you on
the opponent’s opposite border or opposite corner.
When in doubt about whether two friendly characters flank an
opponent in the middle, trace an imaginary line between the two
friendly characters’ centers. If the line passes through opposite
borders of the opponent’s space (including corners of those borders),
then the opponent is flanked.
Exception: If a flanker takes up more than 1 square, it gets the
flanking bonus if any square it occupies counts for flanking.
Only a creature or character that threatens the defender can help
an attacker get a flanking bonus.
Creatures with a reach of 0 feet can’t flank an opponent

So i can get a flanking bonus by being on the opposite site of a friendly when they are in melee combat but i cannot help another get flanking being a ranged fighter.

Unless you're actually standing in the square adjacent to the enemy, then you do not give your friend flanking. Just being on the opposite side but at range does not mean that you threaten the creature. If you did, a ranged fighter would almost always be able to fire off an AoO since he/she would only need line of site, range, and a moving enemy in order to get an AoO.

You are correct in that... like i said the ranged attacker would get the +2 flanking bonus but the friendly in melee combat on the other side of the creature would not.

so... i'm still pretty curious to hear peoples flanking strategies. Ways people set themself up for flanking or ways to make flanking easier.

I am guessing that (as there is now debate as to whether or not you CAN flank with a ranged weapon) what you are really asking is how does your rogue keep scoring sneak attacks?

Once again, refer to the opening paragraph on sneak attacks: You can sneak attack when the enemy cannot effectively defend against you and you can pick a vulnerable spot to strike.

If you are to the sides or rear of an enemy in combat, and are within thirty feet, this should count for sneak attacking as that enemyt will be concentrating on fighting whoever is in front of them. Hence while you may not get flanking bonus (and you suffer a penalty fror shooting into melee) you should sneak attack.

In all seriousness, a rogue with a bow is best in the open where they can work their way around enemies, or take a vantage point to pick off those that get distracted by your teammates.

I understand when my rouge gets sneak attacks. I was just wanting to spark a creative discussion on strategies. for example, i'v heard of some pretty good strategies using some of the shadow dancers prestigue class. Using tumbling. I'm not really looking for advice or rule quoting. i'm was hoping to hear strategies.
