So my usual group started up with a new campain. We all roll our stats.(note I did bother remembering all the stats)

Paladin: rolls wonderfuly not a single penlty all but one bonus, guy does this every time

Sorcerer: pretty average, decent bonus', one penlty you know nothing to good or bad just average

ME, Shaman(oriental adventers):str9 dex12 con13 int 11 wis15 cha8

Rogue: don't know where she put her stats but she got the exact same as me exept a 14 rather then 15. so she has an 8 9 11 12 13 14

for that don't know the Shaman gets and animal companion, and his stats are better than mine.

so I'm the healer, what should I do to make myself a better healer since melee combat doesn't look like it's in my best intrest and I coudn't convince the DM to let me reroll? I have no idea what to do.
we're doomed.

I fail to see how this dooms you. You could just stay out of combat...or get a bow and a few items that boost your Dex.

Ask your DM if, instead of rerolling, you and the Rogue can use the Elite Array:

15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.

Then push for point-buy from now on.

If this fails, accept it, and have fun! :D

This is why I ALWAYS use point buy.

Point out to your DM that you are required to have atleast a 13 on one score and a atleast a +1 average or you get a reroll. PHB page 8 under rerolling. This is added up before Race. And you have to have both. So if you roll all 12 you will have a +1 Average but not a 13 so you get to reroll. Yours is right now 0.56 and since you always round down you have a zero average. And be nice about it.

He has more than +1 overall, and he has a stat above 15. The 9 and the 8 both provide -1, while the 15 provides +2 and the 12 and the 13 each provide +1. Which means he ends up at +2 overall.

I alway average it by dividing it by 6 abilities which gives you your average modifier. Never notice it said sum before. Isn't weird how that happens sometimes. But he/she never said what race he was and if they were his final rolls after race.

You're only doomed if your DM punishes you for having bad stats.

Make an interesting personality, arrange your stats reasonably, and enjoy some role playing!

I'd second this as I recall a friend playing a human fighter back in 2nd Ed days who had an INT of 3.

The player was a fantastic roleplayer and the character became a strange kind of mascot for the party.

I'll third this. Don't panic, you're far from doomed as long as your DM knows what he's doing. You may even end up having fun with this character. Having weaknesses is the best incentive for party cooperation and adhesion. When you are so powerful that you can do it all yourself, what need have you of anyone else.

Try it out and see how it goes. I think you'll have fun.

Just to harp on my own point, I often find that weaker characters provide a lot more interesting opportunities for role-play. Perhaps that fighter with the 11 strength and 10 con wanted nothing more than to follow in his father's footsteps, a military sergeant reknowned for his strength and martial prowess. But, he just never showed that same aptitude, and wasn't accepted into the military. He hasn't given up, though, and is determined to prove himself to be just as good a soldier as any of the more talented men out there. He works constantly at his craft, and is always seeking advice from other fighter-types in the party, in an attempt to compensate for his lack of physical gifts.

That's just one of an infinite number of possibilities.

Now, if your DM is of the "heartless" variety that kills characters frequently just because "What can I do, I rolled a critical!", you might end up being in trouble after all. But, if he's a good DM who rewards role-playing, I suspect he won't penalize you for not having bonuses as high as some other characters.

I don't see how you are so 'doomed'. While not great, your stats are pretty decent. I am not familiar with the shaman(don't have oriental adventures), but I assume it is a full caster.
You say you want to be a healer. Well, healing spells don't usually have saving throws(well, they do, but who would want to roll a will save for half healing?), so having a high wisdom is not really necessary. For healing/buffing you only need to keep your primary casting stat as high as to be able to cast the level of spells that you have access to, since DC's are not usually an issue; starting at 15 and getting 5 stat increases until level 20, you can easily exceed the 19 wis required for 9th level spells.
One suggestion I would make is try and get a race with a Con bonus like dwarf and gnome, since you can never have too much HP.

I guess I wasn't clear what I need is advice on how to play an adequate healer. healing generaly isnt my thing but since the guy who usualy plays the cleric going the marines I said I'd do it. As far as doomed goes I realy don't know what I'm doing.

Other than "prepare healing spells" does any one have any advice? "For surely half a pound of cure is worth an ounce of prevention."

You should be fine for a healer, and honestly your stats aren't bad for a cleric. Just for for 13 Str, 11 Dex, 12 Con, 9 Int, 15 Wis, and 8 Cha. Then grab Zen Archery from the Complete Warrior. If you go for a human cleric (which I would advise) it's your call if you want to grab martial weapon proficiency longbow or just content yourself with a light crossbow. You also might want to consider taking a single level in fighter for the bonus feat and martial weapon proficiency, but if you're really intent on just being a caster then don't.

As a healer there are three very important things for you to make sure you can do. The first is to not get hurt yourself which using a bow helps with. The second is making sure you can damage the enemy without destroying your ability to heal (arrows don't use spellslots so check again) and the final consideration is being able to heal allies if the situation is critical. In this regard your not safe until you have ranged healing spells so just remember to stay close. If you take point blank shot the range on that helps keep you close anyways so a half check I suppose.

playing a character with unamazing stats can be much more fun than one with straight 18's. make up some interesting reason for them, expand upon it a bit, and have fun playing with the backstory.
once you get into the character, you'll be glad you kept the stats
