| DarkDewDrop11-16-06, 12:12 PM | My party is traveling long distances over ruff ground. My DM Says that I can buy or find a flying mount. I’ve never had a flying mount so what are a few recommendable ones. I’m leaning toward some thing fast over strong but both would be great. Dark vision would also be very useful. |
| Kitaki11-16-06, 12:19 PM | Gryphon/Pegasus/Wyvern are the basic choices for a nice flying mount that is also good in combat when needed. |
| Toloran11-16-06, 12:35 PM | Dragons are an option if you can find one that will cooperate. |
| Sir_Wolfgar11-16-06, 02:42 PM | Don't forget the hippogriff! It might be more convienent to just use a magic carpet, so you don't have to worry about feed, which in the case of most flying mounts, is fresh meat. |
| ressurrector11-16-06, 03:52 PM | Pegasus/Hippogriff: good speed/maneuverability Gryphon: big n beefy Wyvern: For that draconic flavor. |
| Iddig Ap Nil11-16-06, 03:56 PM | don't forget Giant Eagles, Giant Owls, and Giant Ravens (Frostburn) as flying mounts. Myself, I prefer the Griffon. |
| DarkDewDrop11-16-06, 05:19 PM | Wyverns are a bit too stupid for my taste and the Giant Eagles, Giant Owls porbably won't make the cut because thay don't have dark vision. I can't find anything on Giant Ravens (Frostburn). As far as dragons we do have one but riding on an an undead corpse is not that satisfying, our wizards got his little dead green dragon so I think thats a little Discouraging for any other dragons willingly come. Gryphon, Pegasus, and hippogriff seem to be my favorite choices right now though I am leaning toward the Pegasus because of its 120 movement but it seems abit fragil. The Gryiphon I also like but it's more for battel than a way to get around. |
| ressurrector11-16-06, 07:00 PM | Remember, your mount can wear armor as well, and there's various items/spells that can keep it alive. If someone has the Farmilliar class feature (and improved farmilliar) you can see about using that to get a flying mount, who gets improved survivability. (An Enlarged farmilliar might work as well, depending on it's origional size) An animal companion or a Paladin's mount are other ways to beef it. If you've got an item creation mage, you can make a pegasus/hippogriff effigy (improved HP, Nat armor, etc...) |
| DarkDewDrop11-17-06, 12:07 PM | Where do you find armor for a mount? Do they use different type of armor? Ware can I find the price and stats for this? |
| Kitaki11-17-06, 02:42 PM | Barding (mount armor) is detailed in the PHB with equipment, i'm not sure if there are other books that also detail it. |
| nightwing11-17-06, 02:47 PM | Rope yourself a nightmare. That's by far my favorite! |
| Koji11-17-06, 02:47 PM | The Arms and Equipment guide is outdated, but most of the stuff carries over pretty easily. My gnome sorcerer had a dire bat from that book and it was a very fun mount. They have blindsense, so they can get around in the dark, but I'd be wary of bringing them into combat, because they only have a few hit die, and falling from 60 feet and losing your mount at the same time sucks. |
| ressurrector11-17-06, 03:10 PM | For barding: Barding, Medium Creature and Large Creature Barding is a type of armor that covers the head, neck, chest, body, and possibly legs of a horse or other mount. Barding made of medium or heavy armor provides better protection than light barding, but at the expense of speed. Barding can be made of any of the armor types found on Table: Armor and Shields. Armor for a horse (a Large nonhumanoid creature) costs four times as much as armor for a human (a Medium humanoid creature) and also weighs twice as much as the armor found on Table: Armor and Shields (see Armor for Unusual Creatures). If the barding is for a pony or other Medium mount, the cost is only double, and the weight is the same as for Medium armor worn by a humanoid. Medium or heavy barding slows a mount that wears it, as shown on the table below. Flying mounts can’t fly in medium or heavy barding. Removing and fitting barding takes five times as long as the figures given on Table: Donning Armor. A barded animal cannot be used to carry any load other than the rider and normal saddlebags. |
| BW022211-17-06, 04:37 PM | DarkDewDrop, Word of caution. It is extremely easy and mid to high levels to destroy, charm, disable, etc. a flying mount -- and kill any rider not able to feather fall. An empowered lightning bolt, a hold monster spell, or a summoned air elemental will make short work of a hypogriff, pegasus, or other lesser mounts. Magical forms of flying are often safer. If you have to get a creature, try for a griffon. Few other creatures have the ability to survive a good blast past APL 7 or so. |
| malignor11-17-06, 04:53 PM | Spider Eater Awakened Dire Bat Half-Fiend Warhorse Half-Celestial Warhorse |
| DarkDewDrop11-17-06, 04:58 PM | Magical forms of flying Where could I find the info about this thing? I'm also looking for the stats for a flying carpet and broom. |
| Kitaki11-17-06, 05:03 PM | Flying Carpet, Flying Broom, Winged Boots, I can' think of anything else. Those are in the DMG |
| ressurrector11-17-06, 06:40 PM | Winged Cloak is vastly overpriced in 3.5, but it's still the simplest permanant personal fly speed shtick. |
