| Banebringer01-20-06, 04:19 PM | I hope this is the right thread for this, I have no idea where to post this question otherwise. How does a flying character shoot a bow or ranged weapon with a range increment? Do you take 10 feet off for every diagonal line to the ground from your character for the purposes of range? For example, if a flying character with a longbow is shooting at a target on the ground from 10 feet away, but the flying character is 80 feet off of the ground, would the range of the target then be 90 feet? Also, according to the PhB you do not take a penalty on any ranged attacks within 1 foot of the maximum range. Does this mean if you fire a longbow at a creature from 110 feet away (counting his space), that you take a -2 penalty on the attack unless you have precise shots? I am sorry for the rather stupid questions, I just can't seem to find the answers. |
| ressurrector01-20-06, 05:15 PM | At 0-110 feat you should take a -0 at 111-220 -2 221-330 -4 etcetera Precise shot has no effect on this, the feat is for shooting into a melee. As far as flying creatures, use the rules for diagonals as stated in the PhB. |

I would imagine that you would use the same rules for diagonals + lines, but I was just unsure if gravity played any effects. |

(Find distance from ground positions, then use that with height) Gravity? This is D&D! We ignore the laws of Physics all day! |
| StevenO01-21-06, 06:09 PM | The short hand method for finding range is to take the larger of horizontal difference and vertical distance and add half the small distance. It isn't exact but then firing from different heights isn't as easy as it sounds. The true range(squared)=horizontal distance(squared) + vertical distance(squared) or [r=(h^2+v^2)^(1/2)]. |
